Description

This gaming rig was designed by Jellifish for Pbfish. Pbfish wanted a new gaming rig for World of Warcraft. She loves playing WoW but has trouble seeing during raids. As a Druid healer she needed to be able to see every detail. Pbfish wanted the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG348Q to run 100+ FPS at 100Hz in ultimate settings with a slew of add-ons and didn't want there to be any long load times for anything. This in mind, I decided to make it upgradable down the road for even better graphics. The RAM is on the low end of the motherboards capabilities but 16Gb is O.C. to 3866. The upgrades for this include bigger RAM as it drops in price and bigger 3866MHz stick are available. The GTX1080 by Zotac is a beast and when the GPU drops in price SLI becomes an option. Eventually a 2 way SLI and 64GB 3866MHZ RAM, will be added to extend the life of this monster.

Update: STAY AWAY FROM THIS CASE! The Raidmax Viper GX has terrible airflow restrictions even with 5 case fans, 2 120mm intake, 1 120mm rear exhaust and the 2 120mm at the top for the intercooler because the top cover is terrible. Installing the H100i in this thing requires some gentle persuasion, I.E. hammer and screwdriver; not kidding sadly. I could handle that but when Pbfish keeps shutting the thing off plugging in USB devices, I cannot. The top cover moves just a bit and triggers the off or reset button, even without the H100i v2 in it. The top case is just not meant for the newest intercoolers YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Also the Hotswap 2.5mm port is a joke. Tried to use it a few times and it takes a long time to read anything out of an SSD. Even with these problems Pbfish loves the actual computer components and WoW in 4k is beautiful.

Looking for help: If there is anyone who can recommend a case for this Rig to reuse the parts please leave a comment. It has to be able to fit the MOBO and H100vi v2 without any troubles and has to have a window. Thanks in advance.

Part Reviews

Video Card

180+ FPS on WoW Ultimate settings with add-ons and a 34" IPS ASUS ROG SWIFT monitor at 100Hz. Buying more once price is below 500.

Case

This tower looks great but does not truly fit a Corsair H100i v2. I had to wedge it in and bend part of the case to get it in. The top panel looks like it should hold 2 case fans instead. Furthermore, the back case fan must be removed to install the ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII HERO ALPHA because of the port cover at the top, then can be reinstalled. With a little patience you can fit all of it inside but the top causes the power and reset buttons to not work or get stuck. I have to push down on the front to get it to do anything.

Power Supply

Runs cool and quiet. Excess power to spare. Comes with a ton of cables that are really well put together and a case to hold them. Love Rosewill.

Monitor

Make sure you have the desk space because this is a monster. makes everything look great when running a GTX 1080 in it. Pricy but worth every penny.

Keyboard

Great keyboard no problems ever.

A pretty cool build. By the way, though, you can only go 2-way SLI with GTX 1080's- anything more than 2 is unsupported now by Nvidia.

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

2 Way SLI on GTX 1080s is still worth the effort. Thanks for the info thou I will consider this more closely next time. There is more than meets the eye there. 2x SLI 1080s still rocks the most intense of games with relative ease. Plus with the MOBO having 4 way ready it is more future proof as they release the latest GPUs.

AuraNightheart 3 points 4 months ago

Yeah. This will absolutely destroy WoW at 4K.

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

It does at mad FPS. Pbfish loves this Rig.

Seems like doing an sli would be a waste for wow even on 4k which you aren't even using.

You're better off just waiting until the next gen of cards come out rather than even using an sli because it'll be leaps and bounds just like the 1080 was 980/etc, etc..

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 3 months ago

I would agree that the 1080 is better than any single 980 series model but I would also like to point out that 2 SLI gtx 980 ti outperform a gtx titan x at this point. So using 2 sli gtx 1080 should outperform the next gen single cards at a fraction of the cost once the next gen comes out. Even 2 normal 980s in sli outperform the titan x. So to say that I am better off spending the money for a brand new gen would be better is, in my opinion, false. Currently a titan x will run you over $1200 https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/products/10series/titan-x-pascal/ and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA85V4RG6813&cm_re=980-_-14-500-382-_-Product shows a gtx 980 non ti for $653. You will pay more but you will get more performance. Better performance for just 106 more and you can split up the payments over the course of a couple of years. Thanks for the comment.

What is that fan for on what appears to be your RAM?

BladeRunner531 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

for corsair ram modules you can buy a cooling fan and shroud if you want, they have that on sale on their site so i guess he felt that he needed it

aprofile 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

ok thanks

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Yes it is a RAM Fan that came with the sticks. Put it on to ensure that there will not ever be lag due to heating issues.

Ryuhara 3 points 4 months ago

Interesting build. Is there much difference in 3688 RAM and 3200? You could've saved some money there. Also I believe anything over 2 way SLIis t really viable in the 10 series. It'd be a better idea to just get a new xx80 GPU a few years down the road.

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Looking to go a little overkill by going big on the RAM. Future proof for 5 years. SLI on 1080s will keep the cost cheaper when the time comes for it. Plus with 2x 1080s SLI you have 16GB of GPU RAM. When the cost of 1080s drop upgrading will be cheaper than buying the latest and greatest. Who knows?

Ryuhara 2 points 4 months ago

Ah good point. SLI will definitely be more economical in the moment and probably outperform the next xx80 card.

Very nice build you have here! I panicked for a second, as I was on the Canadian dollar viewing. And it said the RAM costed over $1,100. Then I switched, and it was $200.

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks Ill tell the Pbfish you said so.

Cam84 2 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Nice build! That psu is interesting , who makes that rosewill psu ? ( i.e. Seasonic etc)

KevinSlamsPigs 1 point 4 months ago

Umm Rosewill the last time as far as I know :P

Cam84 2 Builds 0 points 4 months ago

Nah there are certain company's that make psu then a company slaps their logo on it, it's how you SHOULD chose your psu ;)

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Yes it is Rosewill. Very easy to use full modular PSU. Recommended.

Orrubieso 2 points 4 months ago

I would upgrade that SSD to a SAMSUNG 850 EVO 250GB or 500GB. Personally I recommend the 250GB, because the 500GB is absolutely unnecessary fro gaming.

Orrubieso 1 point 4 months ago

for*

FreeWayPineapple 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

My games take up more than 250 gigs because of the massive amount of mods I get.

Orrubieso 1 point 4 months ago

I that case I would get a higher amount of memory. I would still stick to a Samsung SSD, look at userbenchmark.com to see specific performance speeds. It can get very pricey tho.

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I agree with you the Samsung 850 EVO is pretty awesome but the M.2 is creates less heat. Plus less copper to lose power due to copper loss and lower power draw. Save the Watts for GPUs.

FreeWayPineapple 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

4k wow

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Like a boss.

Gooberdad 7 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Wow. You have build a World of Warcraft monster machine. Nice job.

Thumbs up.

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Thanks Pbfish enjoys it very much and will be happy to see that other appreciate an overkill rig just like her.

Ninjadudewhat 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

I thought WoW didn't support 21:9

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Pbfish loves the build. The screen using G-Sync gives her the edge she deserves. The display has WoW edge to edge. I do not know if WoW doesn't handle 21:9, but I can say it does look amazing on it.

chubble123123 2 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

The case looks ugly but ok. Why such little ssd space as well. Change the case to something like a phanteks enthoo evolv and get 500gb samsung ssd.

chubble123123 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

but +1 for gpu. Those amp cards look so nice. Thinking of a gtx 1060 amp edition

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Agreed. The case is my only regret, but I regret nothing when it comes to the SSD. Less heat and less power draw and super speeds to load anything. This Rig is for WOW only. What can I say it is a beast Pbfish loves it. Pbfish just installed pink fans all around and now it glows pink and stays cool.

ajpinton 11 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Good looking build though its a tad bit overkill for WoW, is she planning on streaming? My only real question is why the RAM cooler? Those things are pretty much useless, though in a 3.3k build I doubt the cost of a RAM cooler really matters.

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thank you for noticing the overkill. The RAM cooler came with the sticks, and help with the heat as it is overclocked to 3866MHz. I did not even know that it came with one and would have purchased it outright. Pbfish wanted a 4K computer so I made a 4K computer. 3.3k is worth Pbfishes' happiness. Plus why do when you can overdo; it is better than having to redo.

ajpinton 11 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

I did not notice the RAM was clocked at 3866Mhz, though still most likely does not need a RAM cooler (lol) but it came with it so why not. Its a bit of novelty in the very least, I bet less than 1% of the builds on PCPP have a RAM cooler on them :D. The techie in me really wonders what the RAM temps are with/without that cooler, I have always wondered how good RAM coolers actually are.

Does wow support 4k yet? I quit back in WoD and have not really paid much attention since. Just about anything is worth it to keep the lady friends happy.

Jellifish submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I do not know the honest answer I play steam and Pbfish plays WoW. She enjoys it now. Before she was playing on a xps studio with a 5700 hd series gtx.

weeman3147 1 point 2 months ago

you should fix up the cables in the pictures they look like they are everywhere
