Description

This is my first attempt at building a machine so I saved up a bit and decided to go around $1200... but then I wound up going more like $1450 in the end. It's worth it and it was a pleasure to build. So glad I went with this case, the Fractal Design r4.

My motherboard posted right away without any issues on my test bench and everything went pretty smoothly. I followed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roFb3TNePIg extremely closely, which is also why you'll see the stock cooler on my CPU in the first set of pictures instead of the H100i. It made it much easer to grab onto the motherboard when trying to get that damn I/O panel to position correctly with the ports on the back. That was the most difficult part aside from getting the RAM sticks in, because it was so tight I thought I was going to snap something on the motherboard.

Anyway, those are my pictures; thanks to all of you who helped me out with my questions! I'll post accurate stats once I get fully up and running and maybe OC'd a bit.

Also, it turns out I love Windows 8. After my last computer being XP I got pretty sick of the standard Windows environment. Really liking the 8 interfaces, I know I'm in the minority : )

Sorry for the grainy pictures.

nice build!! great choices! how is the sidewinder treating you. i am looking at a keyboard upgrade and I am not sure if i want to pay upwards of 100$ for it.

Thanks, I'm really happy with how it turned out!

The sidewinder is nice in terms of the backlighting / macro capability. I wouldn't say the keys are the best ever but I'm probably just used to my flat macbook keys. All in all I'd say it's well worth the 50 bucks. If I were to have a bigger budget I'd probably go for one of the mechanical keyboards.

Haha! Yeah Macbook for doing work -- not so well for games. It got super hot from Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3... I probably did some irreversible damage to it from playing those so much.

My build is basically your build but toned down a bit haha. We should totally play together, we'll have similar FPS, we can be frames per second buddies! lol, but nice build, some really good choices.

Awesome! Yeah I just got that new humble bundle right after I ordered my parts so I have Battlefield 3 now (unfortunately it's on Origin and I hear bad things about the server) but I'll be on there I'm sure : )

I have those games too :o dude you're my twin :D Lol, the only thing annoying about Origin servers is that you find games through a website. When you launch the game it brings you to a site and you choose your server from there and sometime it can take a while to get you in a game.. We should play together sometime though!

Really nice build with great parts. Not sure why anyone would choose windows 7 either. Even if you don't like the UI (which I think is great) the performance is better.

Wow. Remarkably similar to my own recent build, even got the bench pic... Personally, I went with a Sabertooth, 16GB of RAM, and a much bigger PSU, but that's just so I can upgrade it in the future... Nice.
