Good times.

by grizzlyman

Figured I'd just throw this up as I've seen quite a bit of interest about builds using the 860k. Some of this stuff was used with parts of my previous build until I decided to try out the 860k before recommending it to my younger brother who was interested in building a htpc/gaming setup for cheap.

So far it has been great, it was kind of a pita to overclock, even just the little bit that I did. I think it was worth it though. My plan is to use this until it won't play the games I am interested in. Hoping it will last a good year or two.

Currently I play the games listed below.

BF4: 60+ fps high setting Project cars: 45 to 60+ fps depending on track/weather etc. Dirt Rally: V-sync 60fps ultra setting Dis-honored: Maxed out V-sync 60fps Borderlands: V-sync 60fps BFBC2: V-sync 60fps high or whatever, looks great

I got the case for free from a friend, it is a heavy S.O.B. empty, really sturdy case. I don't think I'll have to worry about airflow in this thing. My only gripe was with the piece of garbage wireless adapter, it took a dump after owning it for just over a month. Terrible photos, I know... I recently switched to V.M. for cell service and my phone has a terrible camera. Oh yea, I didn't update any of prices paid for any of the stuff, so before I start getting flamed for paying to much, sorry I'm not updating it.

Part Reviews

Great CPU, no complaints for a budget build.

Does what I need it to do. Probably should have went with the asus axx pro, but hind sight is 20/20.

Stuck it in, enabled xmp profile and it works fine.

Nice SSD, works great... so far.

Salvaged from previous build, works great.

Video Card

Nice gpu, not real loud and plays all the games I'm interested in very well.

Power Supply

Read a lot of bad reviews and stuff on these, but I've had this for a while. Picked it up on sale, if it takes a dump I'll report back.

Optical Drive

It's plays discs.

Wireless Network Adapter

P.O.S., died after a month.

Monitor looks good, a little on the bright side and you definitely need to sit directly in front of it to not get that "shadow" effect.

Update, I picked up a h236hl and it is a million times better. It makes this monitor look like rubbish color wise. Everything pops on the h236. I didn't realize how washed out the colors were on the g236 until I got this today. Another plus is the h236 is an ips monitor.

Sweet keyboard, I had some BB gift certificates that I wasn't using, otherwise I would've bought a cheap keyboard.

Nice mouse, works great. Used some old BB gift certificates I had laying around.

Nice Build! My CM HAF922 has a 200mm top exhaust, but it doesn't stand out like that one does. But I love your part choice, and I can't think of a better $1k(ish) gaming setup for those results.

I plan on upgrading my computer's graphics card to the one you're using and i was wondering if it works well and whether or not if you think i could play the newer games like fallout 4, gta 5, starwars battlefront, etc, and also your personal experience with the card, thanks!

I've been very pleased with the performance of it. GTA v runs really well, I don't get 60fps all the time, but I attribute that to my CPU. Bf4 runs really well, I have the user cfg set to 74 fps and it generally stays around there. I run both of these games in 1920x1080. What really surprised me was after I got into sim racing and picked up two extra monitors is that this GPU actually had the balls to run some sin racing games at 5760x1080 60+ fps. The three main racing games I play are iracing, gsce, and assetto corsa.

If I were you right now I'd seriously consider buying a 290, or even a 390 just to give yourself some headroom for any newer titles coming out in the next year or two. Newegg has a blower 290 for $220.

What CPU/GPU do you currently have? If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I'm sitting around bored out of my mind right now.

First of all, thanks for replying! Secondly, (some back story so I make a bit more sense) the pc I currently have is a pre built I bought from bestbuy during blackfriday sales because originally I had a whole part list I was gonna build and everything but the way things turned out buying the pc was easier so some parts aren't up to snuff I should say. The cpu is currently an AMD fx 4300 quad core and my gpu is an AMD Radeon r7 200. Ive been wanting the gpu u have as I have heard good things about it and I'm trying to get this part for Christmas since it's a bit cheaper and I'm only 15 with no current source of income so I can't go too high with the price range also since I'll need to buy a new psu to accommodate for the new gpu. But anyways thanks for the insight on the card and the games you play that helps honestly

Is the motherboard doing good for you?

grizzlyman submitter 2 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

Motherboard was great, just switched to an intel CPU/MB though. Can't decide whether to keep it and the CPU for a second simulator in the house or sell it.

Is the bios easy to use and good for overclocking?

grizzlyman submitter 2 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

Bios is easy enough, and over clocking is simple, just be prepared to get a chip that won't go over 4.2 stable.

I like the build! But that fan on top I've never seen that before! Different for sure, and have you ever considered upgrading to the newer card considering the rx 480 and gtx 1060 just came out?

grizzlyman submitter 2 Builds 1 point 32 months ago

Maybe when prices come down!
