Description

The name comes from The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson.

About:

This was my first attempt at building my own computer. For years I exclusively used a MacBook Pro, but having graduated years ago portability was no longer my main priority. I wanted a more powerful machine to use for gaming, Plex, and some photo/video editing. I know an i7 is preferable for video editing, but I'm not a professional videographer and the i5 works very well for my workload. Plex is able to transcode and serve 3-4 HD movies simultaneously. If no transcoding is required, the bottleneck will be my network before the computer. Overall I am very happy with the build.

Updates to the original build:

  • Swapped out a loaner NVIDIA card for the R9-270
  • Added sleeved cable extensions

Future Plans:

  • Noctua NF-F12 Fans for the H100i (Included fans are noisy and obnoxious)
  • Swap out the 120GB SSD for a 250GB... In retrospect, I should have sprung for the bigger boot drive to begin with
  • Additional storage for growing media library

Why did you go with Z87 and a 4670k over Z97 and a 4690k? Also why an 840 evo rather than an 850 evo?

Look at the date built.

The 850 EVO is not that much faster than the 840 EVO and costs significantly more.

True that, but there are 240gb SSDs for cheaper than the 120gb 840 evo that he purchased.

Neither the 4690k nor the 850 evo were released when I did this build. I only just now got around to posting the final build, but I bought all the parts back in March. I will likely go with an 850 (or the newest spec at the time) when I upgrade the boot drive.
