Description

This is a (n almost) complete overkill build simply because I can. It's primarily running an HTC vive consistently at 2.5x supersampling with no issues and doing media encoding, very quickly!

I would not recommend this build at all and you can definitely achieve the same result for far less outlay. I'm fortunate and just wanted to build my 'dream machine'.

I used to build PC's on a regular basis, back in the day and somehow fell out of it and have been, sadly, languishing in fruit land for the last few years. I saw the vive demo'ed and had to have one..hell I wanted VR back in the '90's.... which led to amassing these parts.

Why go to all this expense and not drop in a pair of titan's I hear you ask?.. well I like the lighting and thermal throttling abilities on the strix 1080's and they do the job admirably and I wouldn't want to go completely over the top and remove all upgrade potential :)

It's an amazing system that I thoroughly enjoyed building and is likely faster than I'll ever need for the next fw years at least.

Oh, and I know.. the SLI bridge has since been replaced for a 'proper one' ;)

BUT CAN IT RUN MINESWEEPER?

In all seriousness though, this is one of those "Holy ****" builds... and I'm jealous.

I do want to know where you found a 960 pro 512gb. I bought one from Newegg, and they cancelled the order. I ordered one from Samsung, and they say its backordered. I do not know where to find these at all.

But ye, its a pretty solid build. I think the power supply may be 200W too many, but at a certain point, it doesnt matter too much.

I suppose if I had to suggest something, it would be to get some HUE+ and AER RGB Fans going on in there, but it is most certainly just cosmetic at this point. (since this would be better than the cablemod strip and the Thermaltake fans)

I'm in the uk.. I ordered from a local supplier called scan, www.scan.co.uk

Agree on the fans, the strip however plugs straight into the aura header on the mb & matches the lighting of the whole thing, I quite like it :)

I had that same problem on a build. Settled for the 960 EVO which showed up in stock locally before my PRO ever shipped. I guy can only wait so long!

Trade?

Nice looking build - appreciate that you not only put in high end parts, but took care in putting this together.

You should have gone for SLI Titan X's ;) . DO A CUSTOM LOOP

And that cable management... Wow.

  • 2 points

Idk, I think the Titan Xs are kind of overpriced for what you get. I think he made a good choice with the dual GTX 1080s. Custom loop would be legit!

Of course they're overpriced, but it still is the the best GPU on the market. I just thought that considering the rest of his build he could have afforded two Titans :D.

He stated in his story that he wanted to have an upgrade path and he liked the lighting and thermal throttling.

It's always great to see a ton of money spent on a PC reflected in the quality of the build itself. Not just parts and their configuration and coherence but simple things like cable management. It makes me far happier than it should to see velcro straps. Super pretty.

I'd estimate 30FPS on Roblox. Jk, jk. Almost fainted when I saw the power within this build. DUAL ASUS GTX 1080 STRIX CARDS? Noice. Haha, that CPU though. Awesome cable management! Wait. 128GB of RAM? WTF. Boi unless you're running ARK Survival in 15 windows at a time, you won't need that lol. Might've gone overboard on that part.

how do you like the air 540 white case? that's what I'm thinking about getting.

It's big :)

Was great to build in, loads of options for cable management so very easy to organise the insides to optimise the airflow.

Ok cool! It's the case I'm going to use for my very first build. I already know a bit about computers and bothe my brother and my dad are going to help me, bothe with at least 2 pc builds under they're belts.

If your last build was as good as this one, I can see why you hadn't built a new one in that long! also, how did you find parts before the Internet?

  • 1 point

I used to be on very good terms with the local pc parts shop and also we had computer fairs that were actually good! Loads of suppliers in one place every Saturday morning, learnt so much just wandering around talking to people... Also excellent for finding the Best price quickly!

Great build! Very similar to mine (of course, much more expensive!)... Can I ask what temps on the GPUs you are getting under 100% load?

  • 2 points

Nice build!

I haven't seen them go above 50 degrees C.. I think it helps a lot that they are spaced across 3 slots (required with this mb for dual PCI x16) and they have a fan (the bottom of the front 3) blowing directly across.

  • 1 point

Thank you! Yeah, I tested the cards in a proper ATX case, which featured a slot between the cards. The temps dropped significantly, barely cracking 78 on full load after an hour of intensive Crysis 3 gameplay with everything set on max.

Thinking about getting the same CPU and CPU Cooler. How's the H100i v2 performing with that CPU? And do you keep this machine all day or do you turn it off when not using it?

  • 1 point

It's doing ok... I can't remember the figures off hand but I would replace the stock fans. They do sound a bit like a jet engine at full tilt.

But can it run crisis?

  • 1 point

not to alarm you but it looks like you've not removed the scratch wrap off that motherboard? shouldn't do any damage if you forgot too, but the glue might discolour those parts when it cooks off, not to mention what would happen if the wrap heats up falls off n gets pulled into a fan, it's a heart attack inducing sound.

Thanks, It was just on for the photos... last thing I did before closing up the case was remove it all.

As of yet, undecided... likely asus monsters with g-sync.
