Description

I think if I did it again, I would pick up a better motherboard, since there was still plenty of room in the case. It started out that I was going to do a MicroATX build, but then decided to go with this case as I got it with a 20$ MIR. It works fine, but I could have gotten a nicer one with a higher FSB for faster memory.

The M.2 I picked up was a budget choice, but no regrets as it seems to be working just fine with everything I do.

The 120GB SSD is for our Linux partition, works. Nothing bad, nothing great.

The case Is very roomy. I actually ended up having to add one of those NZXT USB Header hubs that I stuck inside, since i decided to get the NZXT HUE+ lightning system. Since the motherboard only had one available USB header, I needed more as the HUE and the Corsair H100i both use a header. (The hub and lightning was not included in the price since I didn’t consider necessary to the PC)

The video card is a boss. No complaints, runs great. No cooling issues so far. While its overkill for her, Its just right for me. Excellent performance in my games and kind of sad this is her computer and not mine! (I'm still rocking a sager laptop with dual 780m)

I benchmarked using 3DMark Fire Strike 1.1 with a score of 14,679. Again keep in mind I did not, and have no intention of over clocking.

I didn't fill in the GPU/CPU temps, but it doesn't really get too warm. I will update that later when I am back on her PC. The GPU has never went above 65c, and the CPU hasn't really been taxed that I've seen even in the userbenchmark.com or the 3dmark tests I've ran.

Cant wait till next year when I decide to build me a computer now!

Edit: In the parts picture, that is not the new monitor, thats my old one. I bought the acer for me, but since i cant get the 144hz I just gave it to the kids build.

Part Reviews

CPU

I would be using this when I build my computer this year, if the 7700k wasn't coming out!

CPU Cooler

Keeping things very cool. Quiet for the most part, unless I put it on performance and then you will hear the fans kick in. But honestly, I hardly have the need since I do not OC my cpu, and have no heating issues.

Motherboard

The price is spot on, I cant complain about the FSB speeds since I am the one that picked this out. Doing this again, I would get a nicer board. (But this buils is for my 8 year old first then me). 1 Star removed for using one of the sata when using the m.2. Not sure if this is standard practice but seems odd. Also wish it had another USB header as I needed 2, but again I knew this going in and just added a USB Header hub inside.

Memory

No issues thus far. But I've never had any issues with G.Skill, and the price was right.

Storage

Very good cheap option for my linux install. Only time will tell on the longevity of this, but for now it is working great!

Storage

nothing special about this M.2. Its not super fast by any means, but for the price and storage I have no issues at all with this. I do not feel that this is limiting my everyday gaming and use in any way.

Video Card

This card rocks the socks. I was considering the 1080, but glad I saved a few bucks and went with this instead. Running all the games I play on max settings, and no heating or performance issues. Many Frames. Many Kills. And also lots of deaths in high qualities.

Case

Very room cube. Good air flow and nice design for the most part. I did take away 1 star because of lack of options for cable management, but since I do not have any 3.5 HDDs, I just crammed it all there in the bottom.

Power Supply

Solid. Everything about this is pretty great, no issues and love the full modular. While I have one pet peeve on this, I did not take a star away. but a couple things that would improve this is: 1) A 90 Degree angle motherboard 20 pin connector. As fat as that cable is, it makes me have to come up over the top making unneeded intrusions with that huge cable and... 2) While its not much, some of the extra plug ins dangling off (like the CPU) cord having two types of plug ins to save making separate cables. It just looks tacky.

Monitor

Everything about this monitor is great.. Except.. (and I took 1 star for this)... The base and tilt. The base is a little weak, and I can not tilt this down at all, it only seems to go back. I did read the reviews prior to buying, so knew this to already be an issue. Given the shellshocker price of 200$, I couldn't pass it up and I am happy with it.

Cool build but why a 6700k on a h110 mobo?

He mentioned that he has no plans of OC'ing it so it doesn't matter really.

Bc a 212 evo struggles to manage temps on the 6000 series. Plus rather be safe than sorry if you ask me

Bc a 212 evo struggles to manage temps on the 6000 series.

That is not true. And if it were true (it isn't), he cant overclock with a non Z170 motherboard.

Ya not even close to being true :)

212 evo manages temps on 6000 series amazingly well, where did you hear otherwise? I want to smack whomever lied to you.

ALSO: He said he likes the quiet from the liquid cooler. Since he's not oc'd that makes sense. The fan will hardly spin without any excess heat.

Smack me? I've witnessed it on multiple pc's, hell, I watched a i3-6100 get to 70C while being tested by a reputable builder where i live.

True, but if he doesn't overclock maybe the 6700 is a Better choice

Who's the lucky kid that got this?

  • 1 point

Oh it was my kid. But since i get to use it while shes at school, I went a little overboard.

I was going to build me a comp this year, but i may just rock my laptop for another year and keep dropping all my extra loots on BTC.

If you have no intention of overclocking why did you waste spend the extra $50 getting a K cpu?

Higher base and boost clock?

I want my parents to help pay the 300 dollars i still need to build my first PC, but Nooo its a waste of money and i should save it for the future. When did saving for the future build me a gaming pc? Never! Cool build tho and congrats to your son for having a cool dad.

Daughter but thanks. It is one of the perks of having a very tech heavy parent, they make sure the kids have cool tech too. She always gets last gen phones, anything i replace for me (which is often) like my old keyboards, mice, headphones, etc.

In this past year she now has a corsair k70 rgb keyboard, corsair void rgb wireless headset, and a new corsair rgb mouse. 9 years old now, and she just started playing overwatch with me so hope she sticks with that as I need dedicated healing ;p
