Nice build, are all of these parts new?

If so here are my thoughts:

  1. The Hybrid HDD is sort of a waste of money at this point as you already have an SSD.
  2. I think you overpaid on the PSU if that's the price you actually paid for it
  3. Was the sound card necessary? How much better is it than the on board sound?

All in all though this is a very nice looking build! Please don't let my questions take away from it as I only see these as places where you could've saved some money and don't find them as downfalls by any means.

How do you like the 290? Loud? Hot? Would love to hear some feedback on this

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 5 points 62 months ago

my bad on point 1 selected wrong drive, i have 3 7200 rpm 2tb seagates for my video eding,

all up the build cost me $1882 so yeah the prices are way off im here in australia got the psu for $169

and yes the sound card was necesary the sig to noise is much much better and the over all sound output is clearer and louder its just much better unless your an audiophile you may not notice :P

yeah the 290 is loud as a hair dryer on medium while gaming , editing ect but using headphones you dont notice and if you ramp up the fans it actualy doesnt get too hot at all 72 degrees is the hottest ive had it with fan at 50% but ill get a waterblock for it when avalible and that will address the noise and heat "issues".

RyneSmith 7 Builds 6 points 62 months ago

Thanks for the reply!

Australia prices ... cringes ... haha I'm sorry!

I'm interested to see the performance/heat change when you get that water block / rad setup, hope that's soon!

Again very nice build!

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 2 points 62 months ago

yeah the prices are crazy so we get things wholesale whenever we can :P

ill keep it updated hope someone comes up with a block soon

cheers -M0N5TER

ImElkay 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

Sound cards are not a necessity, but for people who can actually hear the difference between on board sound a good sound card, it is a must. Even this 30 dollar card runs circles around most on board sound.

RyneSmith 7 Builds 1 point 62 months ago

Guess I won't know till I get one haha

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 0 points 62 months ago

if you use analog headphnone you will see a major differance,

on board audio gets interferance from componants on the motherboard and dont have the best amps

dedicated auto has better processing and dont have the same interferance so its just clear and crisp, but if you have usb headphones you wont notice as much

Bantha-cain 2 points 58 months ago

Nice build mate! HOW in the world did you get the 8350 to 5.12 Ghz???? I've got mine to 4.51 Ghz and is iffy. How long did it take you to keep it stable? What OC test did you use? Great Job!!

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 54 months ago

lapped the CPU and h100i's waterblock and used a very small amount of arctic silver compund fiddled around for weeks on end in the bios couldnt tell you exactly what i changed off the top of my head lol i know i whacked the voltage right up to 1.58 to get stable on prime 95 and set everything in the sabertooth board to extreme, ive found the board plays a big role my asus m5a99fx evo board could only get this chip stable at 4.8 plus you get good chips and bad chips ive gone through 3 to get this one the others didnt like going past 4.6

as for yours you should have no issue getting to 4.6 just turning up the multiplyer and voltage , whack your voltage at 1.5v and just trun up the multiplyer leave the bus frequency alone i think at most they only like going to 205mhz

Great Build. How is the 290 doing? +1

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

its brillant thanks its quite noisy but when i get time and when there avalible ill get a water block for it and throw a thick 120 rad in to cool it, i also need to tidy up my cables a bit :P

Electrospeed 1 point 62 months ago

I'd have gotten the GTX 780 for its CUDA cores, but the 290 has more VRAM, which helps with multiple monitors, so w/e.

+1 great build!

P.S. Clean up those cables!

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 3 points 62 months ago

the editing i do doesnt utilise cuda and the 290 is about 20-25% faster atleast looking at the productivity benchmarks,

and yes i havent even tryed to tidy them up yet lol that will be on the agenda tomorrow :P

Jack_Burton 1 point 62 months ago

Dude, please move PC away from the edge of the table. You're giving me heartburn. I'd be so afraid of bumping it and knocking it right off

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 2 points 62 months ago

she'll be right lol sticky rubber feet on the 500r :P

SparkyOnPC 1 point 62 months ago

hey, whats the name of the desk? :)

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 3 points 62 months ago

no idea sorry , ive had it for 10 years lol

xSWATxBadkid 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

Well, on a positive note you will no longer need a heater, but an air conditioner might be needed.

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 4 points 62 months ago

lmao , it actualy runs at 50 degrees during most games nvidias smear campaign is great isnt it

xSWATxBadkid 1 Build -2 points 62 months ago

nVidia isn't doing it, AMD is. the 290X runs at 95C and then throttles itself to stay cool. I expected the 290 to do the same. Run furmark for a min or two and Im sure that will get it up to temp! ;)

I'm not an nVidia fanboy lol, I got a 7970. XD I just think the new gen AMD cards are the stupidest things I have ever seen haha.

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 3 points 62 months ago

max temp after 1 hour on furmark using my custom curve it hits 68 degrees thats as hot as it gets

it only gets hot when u run the silent bios or use auto modes

ps thats very very overclocked

LeMMingSlayeR 22 Builds 2 points 44 months ago

I don't know about the 290/290x cards, but I have two R9 280s in Crossfire, and no matter what games I play or benchmarks I run, I have never seen either card go higher than 75c. Even when I just had a single 280, it never gave me a worry. Also: Both GPUs are clocked at 1100mhz with the memory running @1375mhz. My previous card was an HD7850, and I have been so happy with all my Radeon cards that unless one gives me trouble or makes me think otherwise, I'll probably keep buying them.

ThePCguy2013 1 point 62 months ago

how high are the gpu temps I'm getting a gpu and I want to see how hot the r9 290 runs

ThePCguy2013 1 point 62 months ago

by the way, I'm running a single 1440p monitor, so would a gtx 780 be better with some OC

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

im running the fan on a custom curve so in games im only hitting around 65 degrees, its a bit louder so id say if you use headphones or are planning a custom water loop get the 290

if you like silence though get the 780 or wait for one of the vendors to bring out there custom designed 290's like the asus dc2 of gigabytes windforce

i dont have a 1440p monitor so i cant test that last question out for you but id say both cards will be competitive although that extra gig of ram in the 290 will come in handy in the long run future games ect

ThePCguy2013 1 point 62 months ago

I'm looking for a gpu by next friday, so I guess I'm going with a gtx 780.
My current hd 7470 makes the screen have defects, so I'm definitely going with nvidia on this one.

Jeza575 1 point 62 months ago

Hey man, Nice build! I think you did great on an Australian budget. Im building a simliar PC, And i HATE Australian prices.

Just my opinion, I would Recommend an SSD to store your gaming stuff on, Just for a little faster game loading and etc. and keep the 7200RPM drives for video editing!

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

i have a raid o of 2 of the 2tb drives for that very reason,

yes i know risky but i also back up to a 4tb desktop external drive

this way i have fast load times in games and still have redundancy of all saves, so its kinda like a raid 10 but external

YourLocalPCNoob 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

If you guys need a perspective as to the noise level of the R9 290, here's a youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5OuQ2lTTzQ

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

lmao, yeah if you push it to 100% it really does sound like a jet but hey you only get 45 degrees in furmark :)

i have my custon fan profile i reach 75 degrees in furmark at around 50%-60% fan speed and at 60% its still quieter tan a h100i in performance mode

any faster and yer it gets LOUD

bigblock454 1 point 62 months ago

really nice build!

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

samsung series 7 24inch screens they have pls panels and are rotatable to portrait mode and run at 75 hertz

SigBuildsaPC 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

How loud is the R9 290? Can you hear it with headphones on while you're gaming? (Assuming you use headphones).

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 2 points 62 months ago

with headphones no i dont hear it at all even though it sits right by my head , but with them off yeah its noisy but only as noisy as a h100i on full blast

tylerste85 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

Yea. H100i is dam noisy full blast!

Callum123890 1 point 62 months ago

What's the name of them monitors? The bezels are so thin. Good build :)

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

samsung 7 series the 24 inch ones not sure of exact model number

Callum123890 1 point 62 months ago

Ok thanks :)

Primusmulti 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

At least you got the H100i got a decent price :3

CrashC 1 point 62 months ago

Have you tried triple monitors in BF4 yet? If so, what quality settings do you have to pick to keep the FPS playable?

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 54 months ago

maxed out at 5760x1080 im getting average 52fps

xolot1 1 Build 1 point 59 months ago

Sweet build with nice cable management! +1 from me. I have the black version of that case, you can actually swap out the honey comb side panel and place plexi glass so that you can have a window to better show off your components. I did this to my PC and don't regret it one bit. It was super inexpensive as I used plexi glass from an ikea poster/picture frame. The only thing, of course, is that you lose the 200mm side fan.

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 54 months ago

yeah im looking at doing that when i get some time :)

ayebee3 1 Build 1 point 55 months ago

+1 - Nice build.

I too use an fx-8350/Asus Sabretooth 990fx R2.0 and was wondering how you went about overclocking. I am new to the OC process and dont want to goof anything up.

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 2 points 54 months ago

go in advanced mode set oc to manual turn off turbo turn up the multiplier so you hit 4.5 turn up the voltage to lets say 1.475v disable the power saving features or you could throttle or leave them on to be safe hit save and exit

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 2 points 54 months ago

also google linus tech tips overclock or Teksyndicate overclock 8350 there will be some tutorials

ksabar100 1 point 45 months ago

If you have bough GTA V, what is your performance like?

UncleBunky 1 point 43 months ago

Cool build, I ran across it because I'm getting the Xonar card, I've always been about Creative Labs, but this one has higher reviews.

HerpaLerpaDerpo 0 points 62 months ago

First of all, very nice build. Just wondering though, why the 8350? Right now and for 2~ weeks before there have been great processor/motherboard bundles at Microcenter. I guess it depends on when you built this build. However, you could have saved some money by going with the 8320 because it's basically the same processor as the 8350, only clocked a little slower which you can undo with OCing it. Also, you overpayed a lot for the 16 GBs of RAM. You can probably have gotten it for like 40~ dollars less. Finally, why the 850 watt PSU? You could've went with a 650 watt PSU and saved like at least 100 dollars. Just my opinion though.

skemble 24 Builds 5 points 62 months ago

Not everyone lives close to a Microcenter. The 8320 is fine, but it can't overclock as high as the 8350. A 500w PSU with a 8350 @4.5 and a 290? That's scary...

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

yeah a 500w would only work at idle i reakon lol the 750 i had cooked itself when i pushed 5ghz mind you it was a multi rail POS, so i clocked back down to 4.5 and got the 850

skemble 24 Builds 1 point 62 months ago

You're lucky you didn't wreck something else!

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 2 points 62 months ago

yeah damn straight,

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

ok first ill clarify im from australia and prices havent been adjusted on here to match what i payed soo ill have to do that manualy,

the 8320 here in australia is only $5 cheaper than the 8350 and thats $220 au dollars

the ram was $119 for the full 16gb

and psu well lets just say i bought a 750 and my overclock killed it so i went with the 850 evo as its actualy rated to 950w and as ill be getting a second card in a few months i planned ahead :P

Spiral350 1 point 62 months ago

Where in Australia is the 8320 $215? I've seen it going for $185 on most retailers, unless you bought whole sale. Australian prices are **** though, makes me wish I lived somewhere else.

Spiral350 0 points 62 months ago

$279 for a 8350!

On Retailers they are about $225 and the 8320 is $185.

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/amd-cpu-fd8350frhkbox (change the area to Australia in the top right corner)

SumanIV 1 Build -3 points 62 months ago

R9-290 for $550, wtf? The R90X is $550. The 290 is suppose to be $400. .__.

Spiral350 1 point 62 months ago

In Australia, prices are WAY more than other countries. The 290 is $550, 290x is $650 and the new 780ti is $850+.

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

i know im in australia lol

mon5ter submitter 1 Build 1 point 62 months ago

yep aussie prices for you
