So this was my first PC build that I have ever attempted. I did a lot of research, and used this site extensively to figure out my approach.
I wanted to use the new AMD chips to help promote a healthy competition in the industry. Intel makes great processors, too, and for my purposes, either would have worked well.
The CPU cooler was a Thermaltake air-cooler (Contac 12 Silent), similar to the one listed here. It is rated for 150W, which should be enough for the 95W Ryzen R5 1600x. Getting this CPU cooler on was a pain in the neck. I was about to resort to a method of loosening the screws on the mounting hardware, attaching the cooler, then re-tightening when it finally clicked into place.
The video card was a compromise, as I wanted a 1060 or 1070, but the current mining craze has them hard-to-find or too expensive. Maybe at some point I will upgrade, but for now it is a good match with my older 1080 monitors.
The remainder of the build was pretty easy, and my son was able to help me with some of the finicky bits with his sharper eyes and smaller hands.
I have not played around with the settings as of yet, and need to update the bios to get a better memory speed (currently showing 2133 MHz).
All in all, it was a good experience, and I have confidence that I can design and build a PC that is less expensive (and more fulfilling) than simply buying one retail.
So far, so good! I will try over-clocking at some point in time. I'm glad to see AMD step up with the CPU competition. I think having two premium suppliers in the market will help all PC enthusiasts, whether you favor AMD or Intel
Manual was easy to follow, and the board seems well-built. I'm not much into the "cool" LED lighting, but the ones on this board seem fairly under-stated. I got it in a processor bundle with the CPU at Microcenter. With the rebate, total was about $40 for the motherboard, which seems like a great deal.
Roomy and easy to work in. Plenty of room for expansion, and a lot of space for longer video cards in the future. With a rebate, I feel like this was a great buy.
