Description

The last time I built a computer was probably 9 or 10 years ago. I've been thinking about building a rig off and on for the last couple but I had to wait until I was working again after being laid off.

90% of my purchases I got before I even found this place as I was ordering them a couple items at a time. I realize now that I went overboard on the motherboard as I didn't get the unlocked version of the CPU. Live and learn I say.

Everything went together better than I expected, the only hiccup was when I was installing Windows 8 and I kept putting in the wrong product key number because you can't read the tiny print on the colored sticker. I finally ended up scanning it and blowing it up to read which letter I had wrong. After that it was cake and I couldn't be happier.

Went overboard on PSU and mobo, but otherwise great build.

Is this for gaming on a tv or do you use a monitor?

It's mainly for gaming on my tv. I realize now I went overboard on a couple parts but it doesn't hurt anything except my wallet and not even that much. My next build when ever that may be will be more stream lined.

How was the PSU and Mobo overboard?

Just wondering since I am not an expert at this stuff...

For this build, 550W is enough and you can find it for $50usd. Second, a Z77 is really useful if you buy a "k" CPU, but builder didn't. He could have bought a great $90 H77 mobo instead.

But it's perfect if he ever decides to SLI. He can also overclock the locked 3570 four bins above stock which is something.

650W isn't enough for 2x760. 700W is needed.

system power consumption. A system with two 760s in SLI don't draw nearly that much at full load. If he has a quality power supply like the corsair TX, it will handle two 760s with no problems. Not even sure where you got the 700w figure from. If it's from a PSU calculator, you have to realize that the PSU calculators grossly over estimate your wattage needs because they take into account poorer quality power supplies that won't be able to handle their advertised power. His tx650 would be able to handle it with no problems.

I can't say I didn't warn him. And I didn't use a calculator, but most systems with 1 760 use 500-550W PSU, so 2 GPUs I'd want 700W.

There's something wrong with the link I posted. This link shows that a system with two 760s use 480 watts at FULL load. A system with one 760 draws nowhere near 500-550 watts at load, it's actually around 300 watts if you look at multiple websites. I understand that it's not good to push a PSU, but even with two 760s in SLI, he is nowhere near pushing it or cutting it close. If he had a cheap power supply, I wouldn't recommend it, but he has an excellent one.

I spy a teenie weenie hole for that CPU power cable! Top left corner. Maybe it's too small to fit though :(

I tried.. but it was a touch too small.

If only they, you know, put some boards into their cases and tested that their cable management works. But that's just me...

He does explain how that happened.

As much of this site considers it a taboo many Z MOBOs come with extra features. Just because he buys one with a locked cpu doesn't make it a bad buy/decision.

Stock on a locked CPU is fine

I use a stock too...

stock is not bad at all its usually when you overclock or do some really heavy duty stuff is when its best for you to get a after market cooler. Can still game pretty hard with a stock cooler.

I almost bought a CPU cooler at the last minute but after reading here (finally) decided not to as I'm obviously not going to over clock it. So far everything is nice and quiet and don't see the need to change anything.
