I started this project with my Dad when I came across old parts from a computer we built ten years ago. The goal was to build a new high-end desktop machine for 4K video editing and playing games at 4K, 60 FPS, at the highest settings.
We went with a 6850K overclocked to 4.3 GHz over the 6700K for it'ts two extra cores for video editing, and over the 6900K for it's higher clock speed and lower price for gaming.
We used a dual M.2 raid array as a scratch disk for editing and encoding. Our last scratch disk was a spinning disk external drive on a Mac, and we wanted to eliminate any potential bottleneck. The raid was managed by software and there were no problems with this.
We chose the Intel 750 as our boot drive. Although the part list shows it as the PCIe version, we actually went with the U.2 version to leave space for other expansion cards. We chose a 6TB WD Black for mass storage, simply because 4K footage is really big.
We chose to run two GTX 1080s in SLI because, at the time of purchase, it was the fastest possible graphics configuration.
We went with an AX1500i for the 80+ Titanium efficiency, and so that we would have plenty of headroom for future expansion.
The build proceeded smoothly until we turned on the completed box and there was no video output to HDMI or Displayport. To make matters worse, the motherboard was posting a code that wasn't listed in the manual. It turns out, for some reason, we needed to use a DVI monitor to install Windows. Once we installed the latest version of Windows and drivers, everything worked fine.
