Description

Justification for parts:

Intel Core i7 5960X:

Easy choice. It was in my budget and it is best i7 currently, should handle video editing without a problem.

Corsair H100i GTX:

i was afraid I would buy a faulty one, but mine came perfect. I replaced the fans with two SP120's for exhaust up top. I read complaints about the pump being loud and honestly I've never even heard it.

Asus X99 Deluxe:

I think this motherboard is great. The color theme fitted the entire PC, and it is solid with a lot of expansion options.

Kingston HyperX 8X8GB DDR4:

Honestly, the only reason I bought these is because Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB's was 20 dollars cheaper, so I guess I did it for one reason: cuz I can (im so sorry for that haha)

Samsung 850 Pro 256gb:

This disk is not audible, because it has no spinning parts. It is decently fast, and I boot in around 5 seconds max.

WD Black 2TB:

It works, and has a lot of storage. It has a weird loud sound when reading or writing, so gosh it's a love/hate relationship.

Gigabyte Geforce GTX 980 Ti

200 fps on max settings in mostly all games. 190 fps in Arkham Origins @ 1080p, Bioshock Infinite and Max Payne had 3000 or so (on cutscenes haha). When you're not gaming, the fans dont even spin so its quiet, when it's working it's barely audible. One word: amazing.

Corsair Air 540:

Love it, but it's big. Kind of easy to build, and amazing for cables.

Corsair HX1000i:

It works, yey!

Windows 10:

Amazing, love it over Yosemite.

All the fans:

3 140mm fans are quiet, but radiator fans (sp120's) are always at 1200 rpm. I don't mind since CPU is cool.

Asus MX279H:

Amazing monitor, I see no screen tearing in most games without v-sync. IPS, so the colors are amazing.

Razer Blackwidow Chroma:

colorscolorscolors: also, I'm still learning how to type on it.

Razer mamba tournament edition:

Works great and has cool lights.

Things to add:

Asus MX27AQ as primary monitor

New desk

Logitech C920

This build took around 10 hours, I built it in 2 school nights on December 16th/17th. On the 18th I downloaded drivers and I just came back from break, so now I downloaded games and apps.

Games run amazing, 200 fps + on everything max in games:

Max Payne 3

Bioshock Infinite

Batman Arkham Origins/City/Asylum

So far this build is amazing, and I recommend all the parts I used. Leave any comments and suggestions below ;).

Thanks for the comment! The machine I worked on beforehand was a 11" early 2014 macbook air, it's horrible. I'm very happy with this machine.

I strongly recommend this case, it's awesome.

Try living with an old crusty Intel Dual core from 2008, 3.5 gigs of DDR2, and a gt 740. Trust me, you had it better.

+1 for the build though.

Some reviews complain about airflow, is this something you've noticed too? Or is it 100x better since you purchased non-stock fans?

  • 1 point

100x better than macbook air. I've never even turned on the stock fans. Airflow is amazing:

CPU temps are alwys 28 c idle, around 40 when using more intensively.

Motherboard around 27 all the time.

Looks awsome sir!! Great build! I have a few suggestions.

  1. Please please please please...get a SAMSUNG 950 Pro. With a budget like yours, not going M.2 is almost crazy. :)
  2. Get a 2k monitor. Your GPU is more than capable of driving 60fps at 2k.

I'm getting an Asus MX27AQ for sure sometime this month as a primary monitor, the MX279H is meant for my PS4 anyway.

There is not enough internal photos~ that is injustice!!!

I'm joking.
Looks great so far. With your future 1440p it will be rocking your games hard. Curious question: What about this monitor? Asus MG278Q.
Enjoy your amazing rig as it's awesome already. +1

But that's like 800 right there... for me at least. Sure that would work too but I was trying to keep a similar price range. Despite the one I linked is about 50 more. Of course I have no idea what prices are for everyone since it's default at the moment.

Oh yeah, I wasn't thinking of the prices. Hmm, I'll check that monitor out.

I like the PG279Q and I can afford it but I don't need it. With this monitor I notice no stuttering or screen tearing, must be the fact that I am used to it by now.

dude your build is really awesome and stuff, but please game at an ultra wide monitor ( LG 34UM95-P or Acer predator x34). Believe me, gaming at ultra wide is THE BEST. If you think they're a little expensive (which they are). Then just go 4K with a Samsung U28D590D.

btw what do you think of this? i'm thinking of making it my first build once i get a job and a car http://pcpartpicker.com/p/f3VVjX any pointers? bit new to the hole thing hopefully joining the masterrace by this summer

  • 1 point

Sounds great!

First of all, NVIDIA might release a new graphics card by the summer - certainly not a Ti but the first models from the 1xxx series, so don't get so excited with the 980 ti.

Here's my "pointers"

  • Get a H100i GTX, from my experience it's quiet and the 5960X is 27 celcius at idle.
  • Get an X99 Deluxe 3.1, since it looks amazing and works amazing, but the Sabertooth will work too.
  • Ram is awesome, I would have gotten it but there was a shortage and I didn't want to wait 3 more weeks.
  • Don't get two ssds, just get one 512GB 850 Pro or a 256gb 950 Pro.
  • HDD's are fine.
  • The 980 Ti hybrid is cool and all (literally), but I would recommend a Gigabyte G1 - it's freaking awesome, and easy to overclock.
  • Get a Corsair HX750i, my HX1000i is so amazing I forgot it's even there, it's a stealthy PSU.
  • Don't know what you need a soundcard for, but get it if you want.
  • Get Corsair SP120's Quiet because they're awesome and quiet.
  • Better get one good monitor than 30 ****** ones.
  • Razer peripherals work for me, so the ones you chose look awesome :D.

Hope You succesfully build your PC by the end of this year.

Your first build? Clearly you have much to learn. What you have built here by your choice of CPU and memory usage is a render workstation/video editing but then a 256gb SSD with a tiny 2TB hard drive just doesn't add up. I would have thought you put 2 x 2TB SSDs in this son of a gun to justify the 5960x/64gB combo which screams I'M A SERVER, I'M A SERVER all over the place but that isn't the case.

Anyway, I'm glad you are enjoying your new PC build but it seems that hype have lead you to overspend. You could have shifted the cost of several components in other key areas but since this was your first build, I won't flame you for it, good job!

  • 1 point

I know what I'm doing, since the rendering and video editing will be done on the 2TB hard drive. The SSD is only for apps and boot, this PC is meant for gaming and video editing, not editing 4K footage or anything that takes up loads of space. Usually a video takes 500mb of space. Only reason I went with so much ram is because of cost and the 5960X because it is future proof.

But still, if I was more of a professional then You sir are correct.

  • 2 points

Was just curious, it's all about the fan man, perhaps I didn't choose better words for my reply and it sounded just not right but you made a sick build out of it and that's all that counts! Once again, nicely done!

    1. Grats on the featured build
    1. Love those Steelseries HD Mouse Pads. I've used a lot of different surfaces and pads and it is far and away the best. Good call.
    1. Why the X99 over a Z170 board?
  • 1 point

X99 - 8 core CPU, more future proof.

The Z170 cpu problems creeped me out, as in I didn't wanna risk the biscuit.

  • 1 point

What Z170 CPU problems? I know there were some memory issues, but I'm not aware of any CPU issues?

  • 1 point

The CPU was made thinner, so some coolers would be breaking them.

  • 1 point

Awesome build and very clean on cable management (air 540 on of my favorite cases). I didn't see this question asked in the comments but if it has any reason for not having the rear fan set to exhaust? I'd personal flip it around me get a couple degrees less.

  • 1 point

What my idea was is that the two sides (front back) would be pulling air in, and the radiator with the two SP120's would be exhaust. Works perfectly.

  • 2 points

Jjust looked a bit awkward is all typically the rear case fan is set to exhaust the hot air out of your case, since your not using a blower style video card its kinda got a hot are trapped and only being pushed through your cpu cooler. But if its working for you and staying below what you want in temps then all good.

Probably not true that the CPU will not go over 4.2GHz. Based on the website SiliconLottery.com (who's only purpose is binning CPUs to sell at prescribed frequencies) they are seeing that around 72% of 5960X CPUs are able to hit at least 4.5GHz. Even without overclocking the author also mentioned doing video editing, where this CPU's 8 cores and higher L3 cache per core and also the ability to use quad channel memory make it superior to the 4790K.
