Description

This build consists of mostly new parts with a few extra parts hanging around. It's used for gaming, general computing, etc.

A few observations:

Thermaltake Core P3: The open setup caught my attention so I figured I would give it a try. The case has decent cable management. My only gripe was they had 2-3 bags (?) of screws but I couldn't figure out what reason they grouped the screws together that they did. For instance, when I was attempting to mount the motherboard, one might think that the screws that go into the stand-offs would be in the same bag. Nope!

i7-6700K: I was initially thinking the 7700K but as far as I can tell the only real difference is the core clock (4.0GHz vs 4.2GHz) and given that it's a 'K' I can just overclock it if I need more power.

Corsair H100i v2: This went on fairly easily. The only thing is that the instruction manual's labeling of the parts is inconsistent with the instructions.

MSI Z270 Gaming M3: My only beef here (and this I should have noticed ahead of time) is that I'm only finding 2 USB 2.0 headers. I currently use one for the front panel and the other for bluetooth. So I can't connect the Corsair USB connector.

GTX 1070: I originally had an RX 480 but decided to upgrade to the GTX 1070.

The NZXT lights had some 3M sticky cable holders to hold them in place. They only work in one color (you can buy other colors but they aren't RGB).

When I get a chance I'll work on some better pictures.

Part Reviews

CPU

A decent, efficient CPU that's overclockable.

CPU Cooler

This keeps the CPU nice and cool. Instructions need to be fixed as some of the parts are mislabeled.

Motherboard

My only beef here is the 2 USB 2.0 headers. I would like to have a third but it's not essential.

Memory

G.Skill RAM has always served me well. This is no exception.

Storage

Good SSD for fast boots and fast writing

Storage

I bought this in 2014. SMART still says it's good.

Video Card

This is a good GPU for the money. It's got some nice pretty lights and a factory OC. The fans don't even kick on unless they actually need to so it's really quiet for normal use.

Case

This is an interesting design for a tower. I had a few friends ask what it was because it doesn't even look like a normal computer.

Power Supply

I can't complain about SeaSonic. Good PSUs with good warranties.

Wireless Network Adapter

This provides a nice backup wifi for when my powerline decides to be fussy. It's also got bluetooth for some lazy file transfers.

Case Fan

This were a good replacement for the stock Corsair fans on the radiator.

Monitor

Good IPS panel display for media, etc.

Monitor

I would have a really hard time switching back to 60Hz for my FPS games. The only downside is that it's not freesync.

Mouse

I ended up getting this one after I tried the G600 which was just terribly awkward. So far this has been doing OK although I've had a tendency to accidentally bump the DPI change buttons.

Headphones

I've had these since 2015 and they still provide a good sound for my gaming. I'm guessing these aren't even out anymore (I see a newer version on the store).

Neat build! Some more pics would be great as the current one is a bit fuzzy.

I really recommend overclocking and getting the 1070, you can sell the 480 for at least a 100 to go towards it

Good build but why win 10 edu?

Awd222 1 point 12 months ago

Some schools give it to students for free.

Hey could you critique my build and what I should improve on? https://pcpartpicker.com/user/ArmyRangerSJ/saved/XjX7P6

Build looks fine. Go for it :)

ArmyRangerSJ 2 points 12 months ago

Thanks! :) Starting to order parts in next two or three weeks! See ya!

Make sure you test them within 30 days so you can send any DOAs back to the seller. Yest them outside the PC case first.

Only problem I see is zotac cards have coil whine sometimes

Xyxer 1 point 12 months ago

Ah. I see.
