Description

I'm back again with my latest build. Desktop gaming for a buddy of mine that I converted from PS4 to PC. He sold his PS4 after I told him all the wonderful things a PC can do and told me to build him whatever I can with $400. He ended up putting a little more money in to pay for the Graphics card too because $400 didn't go too far in this build! Now this parts list price is a little wrong and Ill explain this now.

Some parts I had spare here at my place from previous builds. The PSU was my old one I had lying around and decided to let him use, the white cables were left overs from my Za'kir build, I had a leftover 1TB drive he could use, I had an extra DVD drive, and I had an OS for him already. With that being said I haven't gamed on it or used it but ill write reviews based on putting the system together.

  1. AMD A10-7850k First AMD build for me and let me tell you, nothing beats a Microcenter bundle for the CPU and MB for less then $200. Performance seems good enough for what he will play so I cant complain.

  2. ASrock Killer FM2+ Motherboard looks great, performs well, and installed everything nice and easy. No complaints from me but I also love ASrock boards. So I'm probably a little biased.

  3. Asus Radeon R9 290 Great card for what we paid for it. Little over $200 for one heck of a card that plays his games maxed out. Runs hot but that was expected.

  4. Cooler Master HAF XB Evo Super fun case to build in. Very easy to get to everything and tons of room for drives or if you remove the extra cage, that makes a ton more room for cable management! Recommended for the mobile LAN gamer.

  5. Cooler Master Storm Devastator Extremely surprised by how well this mouse and keyboard bundle are for the price. Feel pretty solid and works well. LED's are nice and bright too.

That's my review for what its worth, I know its not very long or in depth but I don't use it like he does. Hope you guys like the build I did for my buddy! He sure enjoys it and I hope PCPartpicker does too. Any questions or comments feel free to leave them down below, i'd love to here from this great community!

Thanks for stopping by guys and gals!

Curious why you went with that APU since it may be a bottleneck for the video card. R9 290 isn't something to snuff at even with an i3 or FX-6300. But I'm sure in singleplayer mode this would do pretty well at 1080p.

I built in the HAF XB! It's a great case. The PnP drive wouldn't work when we tried to install the HDD into it (for schnitzengiglz) so we had to put it in the normal spot. I know there are some mITX cases that cooler master makes, but I think there should be a direct sibling to the HAFXB mainly for the looks and sturdy handles.

My friend (coincidentally the same one I helped build in the HAF XB) bought the keyboard + mouse bundle and it really seems to be of great quality for the price! The mouse I've broken in (since he didn't need the mouse at the time) and it's really great, although I still prefer my logitech for the infinite scroll. Other than that it's a dandy. The keyboard I'm not sure if it's mechanical but the buttons are really nice to press.

The case looks great with those SP120s lighting it up! I couldn't really tell if it's the light kit or just the fans, but definitely looks great. Love the sturdy handles on that thing.

He was using it without a GFX card for awhile so the APU worked well, he will get an FX series down the road!

The I love the case too. Building in it was a breeze.

And you're exactly right, that mouse and keyboard are amazing for the price!

Thanks for checking out my build!

nah I would either wait to see what the next athlons have to offer (although I believe there's a socket change) or wait til maybe a newer series of CPU comes out because in my opinion a newer series should compliment the 290 better. I do hope your friend does something fun with that APU after it does get replaced though. Great little HTPC chip!

What about that new "Godvari" or whatever thats new?

vikingXcore 4 Builds 1 point 45 months ago

Yeah Godvari is the new one coming out on the FM2+ socket, that's a good point! It will be more of a half-step up since it will still have almost the same hardware (28nm process and steamroller modules, don't know what else :S) as the Vishera, but with increased clock speeds and more overclocking potential. Basically a rehashed, improved Vishera. I would be curious though if there will be a consumer

EDIT:Greenland<-- (i-GPU) Zen since those sound awesome (HPC computer chips).

Nice build. Loving these little powerful PCs.

Sorta shame that the GPU still has the reference cooler design, and small shame that there is no black IO plate for 'aesthetic' purposes. You could safely paint it if you wanted.

DexterW submitter 11 Builds 2 points 45 months ago

Yea the GPU we got super cheap so we couldn't pass up on it, and I/O plates need a facelift in general, they're all pretty Blah imo

the reference cooler isnt like "the end of the world" but it sure doesnt keep it cool lol. i have the sapphire 290 and it just destroys anything i throw at it. I have a slight OC and top out at 68 degrees under load but can hit 71 if its like a stress test. i also have lots of airflow which helps a lot but for that card 94 degrees is still healthy. Also i understand the apu will bottleneck the card but i doubt its a massive bottleneck as i have the 8350 and i dont have a noticable bottleneck. I am able to beat most if not all benchmarks that websites post in their reviews. I guess it depends on your chip, if it is OC'd and some of that stuff. Overall great build and i love the form factor!

DexterW submitter 11 Builds 1 point 45 months ago

It does have a bottleneck thats actually pretty bad. Were gonna get a new motherboard and chip soon though to correct our mistake of going for an APU that wasnt designed for this graphics card

Lazz45 2 Builds 1 point 45 months ago

yeah i wasnt sure if with the APU it was way worse

prettyflamazing 1 point 45 months ago

What is "pretty bad" for the APU bottleneck? I was thinking of making a A10 7850K and R9 290 build. This is going to be a mini itx build and their are only eight itx motherboards that AMD has to offer which is really sad :( All of these motherboards have a FM2/FM2+ socket and nothing else to offer. Can your rig run GTA V @ 50-60fps on high?

DexterW submitter 11 Builds 1 point 45 months ago

A R9 290 can do over the 50fps mark but won't go any higher then 60ish with the APU. It does it in a games from BF4 to open world like GTA or even Civ5 that I tested. I'm gonna pickup an am3+ with a fx-8350 to replace it

DexterW submitter 11 Builds 1 point 45 months ago

And you're right, there isn't **** for mini itx on any AMD socket except FM2

That'd be awesome.
