Description

An early mid life crisis? Or a desire to see what gaming would be like off the consoles, I think more the later. This was my attempt at building a mid range system that would handle games for 1080P close to 60 FPS at higher settings. Basically, a way better experience then consoles, that was my hope. All prices and in Canadian $ and with tax in. US equivalent would be to to divide by 1.4, so $1500 CND all in or $1070 US. I looked for sales over the X-Mas holidays and last parts installed Jan 22. Hope I wasn't to foolish, but pretty pleased with the result.

It's a good build, but personally I would've have gone with a GTX 970 for that price range, and if you wanted to keep the cost down only go for 8GB instead of 16. 8GB is plenty for gaming.

Yah, that is a good point, really only needed 2x4 from what I was researching. This was definitely a cost conscious build as I was having a hard time justifying to my wife. I was looking at the 390 or 970 but for a target 1080P build, the 960 or 380 seemed the be the target choice. The graphics board selection was killing me, I had decided on the 380 4G but I ended up with the 960 4G simply because of the fear of driver issues and the perception I had that the Nvidia card just being "easier". I can still exchange the card and monitor if there are suggestions.

Also, got 3 kids, all under 14. I'm sure there is another build coming for one of them and a redistribution of hardware...I think there will be another GPU in my future ;)

Wow. I used to have that monitor. It was a great price for a good screen, but I went to ultrawide after a few months. Nice build!

Was looking for a 1080P. Now, if I was permitted to go a little wild, well...

Everything I read said the this i5 was still a great gaming CPU with overclock, I got what I thought was a good price and went for it. Don't plan on doing any video editing or such.

I have a question with the GTX 960 4G. If in 2 years, I decide to add another of these card, used or discounted, will these being x-fired be equivalent of a higher end GPU and give the build longer life?
