Description
Hi
This is my third revision of my gaming tower. I'm with the rest of you, always researching parts looking for that performance that's worth the sticker price. The next upgrade will be a HBM2 GPU, as nice as the Fury series are I would like to have more vRAM.
CPU I5 - 4670k - Overclocked using adaptive voltage to 4.4 GHZ. At 4.4 temps will typically reach 61-70C (tJunction). Recorded using Real Temp 3.70
MOTHERBOARD Asus Maximus Hero VI - Solid motherboard. Easy to use BIOS.
RAM Corsair Vengeance 1866 DDR3 - Overclocked to 2000 9-10-9-27 using an extra .05v
GPU Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X new addition - Upgrade path XFX7870->Asus 770->Sapphire 290->??? HBM2 - The only problem I've had with graphic is with some super high rez games I gear screen tears, but I believe that to be the monitor's fault.. turned on Vsync and maintained 40-60fps. Witcher 3 settings are not completely maxed out but close ~fps55 .
Storage HDD's Steam Drive - Seagate 1tb 7200RPM Media Drive - Hitachi 1tb 7200RPM SSD OS - HyperX (has Dragon Age Inquisition installed on it because it's ridiculously slow load time on the HDD)
Case H440 new addition - A bit shorter than my last case. My GPU required my to remove one of the HDD cages, which is moot point for me as I would have done that anyway to help with airflow PSU - Solid as ever
Monitor new addition 1440p The 1080p is a great monitor served me well The 1440p is a new addition: Excellent colour of depth and clarity. I do kind of wish I would have waited to buy a monitor with Active Sync, in triple A games I will get screen tearing with the fps being over 60fps(screen tearing fixed with vsync)
I've thrown in a few in game benchmarks to help people see how these parts perform together. Currently, I'm happy with graphic configs with ~58fps, with no screen tears. 1st Tomb Raider result is with double buffer on, and 2nd result is with vsync OFF
Games with over 10 hours, played over last 4 months: SCII Legacy of the Void, Witcher 3, Pillars of Eternity, Evoland 2, MGSV:Phantom Pain, Scared 3, Mark of a Ninja, Dragon Age: Inquistion, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, The Evil WIthin, Lords of the Fallen, Mortal Combat X, and that's all I can think of right now
Any questions please feel free to ask.
Part Reviews
CPU
If I had the means I would go to the i7
but I won't because it will be tough to justify moving off this chip. Really great performance, I'm sure I'd reach 4.7 with Water cooling, as I have gotten a fairly stable overclock at 4.6 aircooled. Leaving it as 4.4 to preserve the longevity of the chip
CPU Cooler
Whisper quiet, suits colour scheme, never have to worry about leakage.
Motherboard
Solid board, BIOS is well set up.
I bent one of the pins on the socket.... I was replacing the thermal paste about a year ago, bumped the pin when putting the dust cover over the socket.
Memory
Enjoy that I can keep low timings and decent data flow at 2000. Under 80Cdn for 8gb
Storage
Used part got it from work... pretty sure it's 5400rpm. Only use it for videos, pictures, and documents(media)
Storage
All games baring DA:Inquistion load really fast off this. Had a few on SSD and haven't noticed enough of a difference.
Video Card
390 has higher, clocks and bandwidth, and lower TDP. Still I'm really happy with this 290, loses a star because power usage.
Case
Beautiful case, Whisper quiet. A bit shorter than my bitfenix ronin.
Power Supply
So far seems bullet proof
Operating System
Nice upgrade from 8.1(with classic shell interface) Looking forward to Direct xii
Monitor
This monitor has been heavily abused. It has been dragged around in moves, dropped 2 twice. Colours are a bit flat compared to the other monitor I have, I'd highly recommend it as a 1080p
Keyboard
Everyone loves typing on this keyboard. My friend tried it during an SCII tournment, went out and bought a mini ducky a couple weeks later.
Mouse
Had this mouse for years.... easily 4yrs. Has seen much Dota2, LoL, and mostly SCII usage. Still very responsive tracking, with crisp clicking
