The Meme Machine (Gaming Rig)

by DefaultBanana

This is my first gaming rig that I've built, and I have to say I am more than pleased with it. I'm not rendering video or anything crazy, just gaming and posting dank memes on various image boards. I wanted a PC that could handle any game at max settings and so far this has demolished anything I've thrown at it. As you can see, I was also going for a black and white color scheme. With the NZXT Hue+, I can splash almost any color light in there and it will look good, even without any lights at all it looks breddy gud.

Part Reviews

More than enough for what I use it for, currently OC'd to 4.4 GHz. Not much to say really, great CPU

CPU Cooler

Originally I was going to go with a traditional air cooled cpu but then I thought: "screw it, lets go liquid cooled because why the hell not". A decision that I do not regret at all. It was however, one of the biggest pains in my *** during the build. I mounted and unmounted the damn radiator about 4 or 5 times. Initially I had mounted it with the hoses on the left side, which after doing so I discovered the exhaust fan blades were touching the hoses. So out it came, flipped around, flipped the fans around so that the fan wires were once again facing the back of the case and then mounted again. It was then I realized my second mistake. I had not yet installed the optical drive, and now the hoses were blocking the bays. Out the radiator came, in the optical drive went, and back in again with the radiator. But I still wasn't off the ride, as I then realized the radiator was blocking the top cable access holes that I needed to get to. So once again while contemplating suicide by ingestion of cpu coolant, I unmounted the accursed radiator and did what I needed. I also replaced the fans it comes with for the Corsair Air Series fans after reading many reviews that the stock cooler fans are much too loud. Plus the corsairs fit my color scheme much better. After all was said and done, I was quite happy with the result, but next time I build a pc with a liquid cooler I am most definitely mounting the radiator at the very end.

It was an all black mobo with the CPU socket I needed. That was my only criteria for mobos. Other than that the bios is fairly easy to navigate, although I wasn't all that impressed by the RGB LEDs on it. It mattered little with the HUE+ though.

Its RAM. It matched my color scheme. Done deal.

Video Card

Since I had the money for it I definitely wanted a 1080. When it comes down to it, almost all 1080s are pretty much the same. EVGA had the dankest looking one while still being below $700.

Pretty much the perfect case for what I wanted to put in it and how it looks. Also has great soundproofing and solid construction. Love it.

Case Fan

Great fans, move lots of air and are quiet. Also like the colored rings it comes with. SP 120mm went on to the radiator and the AF140 for the exhaust. The case also comes with two 140mm fans that I have placed in the front for intake. I actually had bought a second 140mm that I was going to put on the floor of the case but the PSU was too big and it wouldn't fit. I could fit a 120 mm instead but even that would probably be annoying to install with all of the cable coming out of the PSU being right there. Plus I'm not having any airflow issues anyway, everything stays plenty cool as it is.

1080p vs 1440p really isn't a huge difference. What I was really looking for when I went monitor shopping was that 144Hz refresh rate. This is a great monitor, with a 144Hz refresh rate and 1 ms response time, and the 1440p does look better then 1080p, even if its not that much better. Only problem? There still isn't a whole lot of wallpapers in 2560x1440.

Only real criteria for m+kb was a mechanical keyboard and optical mouse, all wired. I picked these just for the "why not" factor with all of the LED effects and whatnot. I like them, both are solid products.

I just wanted speakers, I'm no audiophile. These sound pretty good for their price. If all you're doing is gaming and watching videos then these will do you just fine.

Nice build! I actually really love the color scheme in the first photo, that doesn't always work well, but it seems to here. Cable management is good, not much happening in there. I recommend overclocking your CPU at least a little, a water cooled 6700k is just asking for it. Anyways, really 100% build!

I really like your desk setup, simple but functional.

Simple and clean - I did the same thing with my radiate 3 times to get it in the best spot.
