Description

After I made my first build, I wanted to do a mini ITX build next; seven years later, and I finally did it! It will mainly be for web browsing, watching videos, and playing non-resource-intensive games- I don't exactly have a use for the performance that I purchased. I intend to keep this build for many years, so it may see heavier usage at some point.

I finished overclocking the RAM very recently, and I haven't run non-RAM stress tests or benchmarks so I wont have any reliable temperature or speed numbers posted.

CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X: The reason why I wanted to build a computer now of all times was due to reading about how impressed people were with the Zen 2 processors. I wanted a decent upgrade from my i5-3750K, but still wanted a cool and efficient processor, so I went with the 3700X.

CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-D15 CHROMAX.BLACK: Initially, I had wanted to get an NZXT Kraken X62, but after seeing all NZXT H2XX builds that use a Noctua NH-D15-type cooler, I wanted to do the same. It's nice and quiet, and I imagine that it will keep my CPU nice and cool in most situations. Working to get the fan securely latched on took a great amount of effort, and everything barely fits after the heatsink cover is installed. I was not able to utilize the front fan since the side of that fan plus the 24-pin cable did not allow the side panel to close.

Motherboard - Gigabyte X570 I AORUS PRO WIFI: I wanted an X570 motherboard for more-updated ports, and there weren't too many mini ITX X570 boards to choose from. I wanted to get the ASUS Crosshair Impact VIII since that had a type-E header for the front-panel USB-C port, but increasing the cost by a few hundred dollars just for that seemed silly.

Memory - Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB: I wanted B-Die, and I thought that I had to look for low-profile RAM due to the CPU cooler I chose, but this never ended up being an issue since the front fan would have been in front of both DIMMs. I specifically looked for these used from eBay since Corsair no longer made the B-Die version anymore (v 4.31). Since these are lower-binned B-Die, it's likely that a Micron Rev. E would have overclocked just as well. I spent over a week tightening all of the timings and making sure that they were stable; it is unlikely that I will ever notice any improvement from doing this, but it was a nice exercise. The unfortunate part is that the read performance is halved by the 3700X to achieve the lower TDP. They are currently running at 3733 MHz, 16-19-17-15-23-38-1T and Karhu RAM test stable past 15000%.

Storage - Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB: I also bought this used from eBay. When I first installed it, the motherboard would recognize it, but Windows would not see it. I tried dozens of fixes to remedy the problem, but I had RMA it in the end. I was sent back a brand new drive, and it has worked well ever since! I went with proven reliability (I know, ironic) over PCIe 4.0, and I doubt that I'd notice any gains anyway.

Video Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 1070: I bought this a year ago for my first computer since my old GTX 670's fan would ramp up doing while doing certain things. I'm itching to upgrade it, but maybe when cards come with Display Port 2.0 and HDMI 2.1.

Case - NZXT H210i: I wanted to build a mini ITX computer from the beginning, and this case caught my eye. Again, I saw many people use a similar case and CPU cooler setup, and knew that I had wanted to do the same. It's a shame that I cannot use the front USB-C port. I know that this doesn't quite or barely qualifies as a SFF case, but maybe I'll go smaller like the Mjolnir case in the future!

Power Supply - Corsair RMx (2018) 650 W: I settled on this particular model after looking through Cybenetics, Tom's Hardware, and LTT forums, and then deciding based on price, performance, and features. I don't think that I've heard the fan turn on yet, which I enjoy. Since it's an ATX PSU, I am not able to squeeze a fan between case and the PSU to give the GPU some airflow, but I hope that I'll be okay.

Other Thoughts/Notes:

  • I used a cable extension for the 8-pin CPU connector, but it's not visible.

  • There is a slim chance I may try to apply a comb to the 24-pin extension in the future, but it doesn't seem feasible.

  • The keyboard was purchased for my first build, back when it was released.

  • The parts that were not from the old build were purchased between the start of November and the start of December

  • Prices shown are after discounts, taxes, and rebates.

  • I plan on upgrading the video card eventually, just not yet.

  • I settled on the monitor that I bought because there weren't any 30-43", 4k, IPS, 100+ Hz, 16:9, 10-bit monitors, but they'll be coming out H2 2020!

Thank you very much! Stuffing the cables in a neat fashion along with a HDD and an ATX PSU while minimizing airflow blockage took some effort.

Thank you! While I haven't tested my own yet, similar builds seem to be around 65°C to 70°C under load/stress test.

I re-seated it once, and I think that it's a little less tilted now (last picture). I may use the included plastic/rubber GPU prop that the case came with.
