Description

so this is a build i did for my friend. he saw my build ( http://pcpartpicker.com/b/A7r ) and he was impressed and wanted a computer of his own. his budget was a lot higher then mine and he wanted something that would last him for quite a while. we started from the ground up, the only thing that got recycled was an old hard drive and a CD drive, thats it. the most difficult part of this build was installing the dark knight 2. the instructions were terrible and after we messed around with it for about 45 mins we got it working. i added 2 140mm xigmatek fans up top for exhaust purposes. the 500R has long screws made for this purpose which was very convenient.

a few other things: i didnt go water cooling because he's isnt going to be overclocking his CPU much. i think it's overclocked to 4.0 for now and honestly the dark knight 2 beats out some of the AIO watercooling units.

i went with a 660ti simply cause he didnt want to spend 400+ for a gpu since he doesnt play a ton of games.

basically he told me what his budget was, what he wanted to do with his pc, and then i went to work. im really happy how the build came out and the corsair 500R is an awesome case and made me very jealous.

At first i thought you were talking about a batman game or something when reffering to the darknight 2, I thought for sure you were autistic until I realised. lol

LOL I thought the same.

If you spend that much cash on an air cooler, you should at least get a dual tower one such as the NH-D14. I know it's fans are ugly, but you can change them to something else without sacrificing a lot of performance. nice build though.

The Dark Knight is actually a better performer than the NH-D14 (albeit a fair bit louder).

That said, the NH-D14 doesn't seem to be the king of air cooling any more - there have been a lot of great competitors lately. Cheggit, yo.

I see that now, though it is only like .3 degrees cooler than the D14, it is still better. But this is still only like the third best air cooler according to your chart. But it is definitely the best value air cooler in my opinion as the H100i is only 4C cooler while being ~$50 more.

To be fair, a 4C difference in FT's benchmarks is pretty significant - the 212 Evo (which isn't nearly as good as those top-tier coolers) sits at 15.9C over ambient. Their test suite is geared more towards consistency in repeatability rather than real-world metrics; actual temperature differences are likely to be higher than what they show.

That said, closed-loop liquid coolers are certainly not value-oriented, but they have their own benefits over air cooling that some people prefer.

True, especially in my case as I have a Phenom II and you need to keep those things below 55C so that 4C off of it would be very appreciated lol

NH-D14 is $30 more.

And, to the OP,That is kind of wasted storage, should have only kept the 3tb and upgraded to better video card. Otherwise, money well spent!

the extra HDD storage is for his tons and tons of HD movies and shows, and a whole bunch of his work stuff too.

i was thinking about that but honestly he would never need a cooler that big. at the most he would be playing some games like SC2, CS:GO, maybe bf3 and crysis 3. no video editing, rendering or anything like that. so for someone like me the D14 would be a good choice, for him it would be a waste honestly. the dark knight II gets close to the D14 within a couple of degrees and the black on black went well with the rest of the build too. but believe me i thought of it too

Oh, that makes sense then. However I do think the D14 would be a little more that a couple degrees cooler, not by a whole lot though. But take those words with a grain of salt as I have never used either of those coolers =P

Did you consider an AMD GPU? I'm wondering if you could have gotten something more powerful in the same price range.

The 7950 isn't really much more powerful, it just doesn't choke on higher resolutions or multi GPU setups as much as the 660 ti does.

I would have gotten this but good build

Why? It's the same price as his on Newegg, and the msi Power Editions are great.

I guess its just for the looks, it seems like it would fit more with the build. It also comes with 150 dollar game coupon!

I find the game coupons to be ... rather useless for the average gamer, where as AMD Radeon GPUs come with Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider or Bioshock Infinite and Crysis 3

Yeah, those are pretty cool. $100 worth of games is one hell of an incentive to go with AMD. I too think the coupons are pretty ridiculous.

AMD's Never Settle Bundle blows Nvidia's out of the water. Hawken and Planteside 2 vs. Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, and Crysis 3... yeah, Nvidia needs to step it up, which is why I still think the 7850 may be a better deal that the 650Ti boost, at least if you want those specific games.

Why 16 GB of RAM? Other than that nice build

cause its a good amount of ram to have in a system like this, and he will never need anymore then that

How do you like the motherboard, I plan on getting one of my own, let me know your thoughts/recommendations please

the motherboard isnt a bad one. we had no problem installing it, but once it was installed we had some software issues. mainly internet connectivity speeds and little things. but those were fixed after a few minutes and since then its been working fine.
