Description

Krasnij Oktyabr (rus.: Red October)

Audio production build for dj / producer SubMarine.
("Red October", u dig?!)

Oscar Wilde would've said this is a simple build. It's pretty much solely dedicated to music production, online browsing and playing Age of Empires 2.

To be perfectly qualified for producing, i made this build to be as silent as possible, while providing maximal CPU and RAM power. For optimal silence i went with the full product range of BeQuiet! components. I replaced the stock fans of the Silent Base 600 with Silent Wings 2 (one 120mm in the back, two 140mm at the front) and put the PSU in downside up for it to make sound, if any, only inside of the insulated case.
The result is a completely inaudible system. In fact: to hear the PC in regular use, you have to put your ear directly on the case. When stresstesting with a 100% load, while in a very silent room, you may perceive a slight humming.
This build is all about quality hardware and maximal silence.

In total disregard of the builds name it was build in december, therefore the christmas tree in the back of the pictures.

but is all about quality hardware and maximal silence.

Of course it took centering much of your build around a German company to achieve that. ;)

Here is the issue with this build. I have a problems with my ears ringing, so i am afraid that this would be way to quiet and i would go into rage mode.

Honestly Joke aside, I love this build, You really did a great job on it. That cpu cooler is a monster, looks kind of good.

Semi-ambitioned amateur. Actually i think the pics i made for my other builds turned out better...i switched to a newer version of Photoshop and Camera RAW recently and everything looks beautiful while editing, but something is going wrong converting them to .jpg. frustrated

Oh yeah, I did add that also lol. I forgot to add that. What about the soundcard and custom cables?

Where do you get the custom cables and lights? I need some red. And would you recommend a sound card or nah?

What for? If for professional use, get a professional external soundcard. Cables a available everywhere for a buck. Got mine from mindfactory germany.

Really nice build. I like be quiet! even as Swiss. Quick question, the Dark Rock Pro 3 seems a tight fit, as the maximum cooler height given by the case is 17cm. Just checking, as I'm intending to use the same parts actually.

  • 1 point

Don't be! It's capabale of running the triple monitor setup. Would be even in 4k. Gaming beyond the likes of AoE2 is not on the users agenda. It's cooling is semi-passive and therefore noiseless in desktop usage.

Noctua is more quiet than Be-Quiet but the aesthetics on Noctua ain't so quiet...

  • 1 point

As a former user of Noctua fans i can assure that is not true at all! At least BeQuiet Silent Wings 2 are way more quiet than any comparable fan in the Noctua product range (of course less performant too).

  • 1 point

Well since you used both I have the question for u,

Does BeQuiet have more static pressure or Noctua

I find static pressure more important than airflow, and im not sure wether bequiet has more or noctua

  • 1 point

Noctua by far! But if your question refers to the use on watercoolers, Noiseblocker eLoop and EK Vardar are best for that!

Quick question, where do you get the parts with no price or place to purchase them? Also, does the power supply already come with the cables because I see the custom red ones you have at the bottom but I'm still farely new at this and I don't wanna get the wrong **** lol. Thank you.

  • 1 point

I'm based in germany and since BeQuiet is a german manufacturer it's pretty easy to get their products here in opposite to other countrys. PCPP doesn't provide the prices because there doesn't seem to be any place in the US where you could buy the parts. The PSU comes with cables, neither completely black nor fully sleeved (my only concern about BeQuiet PSUs), so i bought aditional sleeved red cables for GPU and mainboard power.

I was wondering how the airflow in this case is and if the case stays as silent and cool b/c I've heard people say that since there is restricted airflow there will be more noise from the fans on the GPU. Also I was wondering if you could put two 120 mm fans in the front instead of two 140 mm. It's a great build btw! +1

  • 1 point

As far as i can tell, there's no option for 120mm in the front of the Silent Base 600.
The airflow is perfectly fine, the whole system stays cool all the time and like i wrote in the description, the PC, as i build it, is almost inaudible.

I'm using yours as a reference for my own build. Right now I'm deciding between the Silent Base 600 and 800. Can't quite figure out the difference! Also for some reason the Straight Power 600W is hard to get, but I can get an 800W. That wouldn't be overkill would it?

Also what made you decide the PureWings 2 needed to be replaced by the SilentWings 2?

  • 2 points

I went for maximum silence. And i tried it out. PureWings were silent, SilentWings were inaudible.
Overkill is not a bad thing, just of question of finances.
Can't tell the diverence between Base 600 and 800 from the top of my head but i'm assuming the 800 is bigger.

Thanks. I really liked the aesthetics and idea behind it. However friends on a music forum were critical of the air flow, which can affect longevity of some parts. This is the setup based on their suggestions: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2MBD8Y

I hate to give up on on a be quiet system but this did make sense: "be quiet! Silent Base cases' intake fans are set low in the front, which is basically biased for GPU cooling, and for what you plan on using it for (ie, not gaming, not rendering), this isn't a good idea. On high GPU workloads the CPU cooler will effectively get only the hot air coming off the GPU; in light GPU loads with modern graphics chips, the fans will barely spin at all (because they try to be as quiet as possible, especially when listening to music or watching movies), which means the GPU is barely tossing air upward to the CPU cooler, which will then have to spin its fans faster to such in more air from the low-set fans. Between the restricted intake holes on the front panel, then what little air it sucks in has to get pushed through the chassis structure, then through the restrictive HDD cage design. Just getting enough air in there for reliability will force you to spin the fans faster to get more airflow and static pressure to get past all the obstructions."

  • 1 point

So they suggest a smaller case with an less powerful CPU cooler? Somebody doesn't know a lot about airflow! : )
Plus:
1. SilentWings are PWM-controlled, they can be set as high or low as you need them to be.
2. Noctua IPPCs are way, waaay more noisier.
3. It's a music production build. There will be virtually no GPU load whatsoever.

Nothing against your friends hyperthetical build, but i actually built this one. It's as silent as such a powerful system can ever be and it's doing a perfect job for quite some time now. ; )

I appreciate the sanity check. I put my potential build out there for feedback and basically got two completely conflicting opinions (aside from yours), both expressed passionately. I think I figured out a good balance that includes the Silent Base 600 and Silent Wings 3, and ordered the parts last night. With 12 builds under your belt, I definitely value your feedback. Thanks!
