Description

This was my first PC build. With a new baby on the way I was working with a limited budget, but wanted to leave myself options for future upgrades.

Since I don't do much gaming at all (occasionally play some Command & Conquor Uprising or other older games), I wanted to use an APU to eliminate cost of CPU & GPU. After much research I settled on the AMD A10-7850k.

MSI A78M-E35 motherboard gives me 3x PCI slots for future upgrades. For work I do some lots of data handling and calculations on large 1-minute databases so I opted for 16GB memory. SSD as boot drive lets system boot extremely fast.

The Corsair Air 240 case was awesome to work with. Great cable management, came with 3x 120 mm fans (which is all I am using for cooling. Went with a larger power supply so that I could upgrade components in the future without worrying about needing more power.

Only downside I am experiencing so far is when transcoding videos for Plex (while streaming via wireless on a Fire TV) I get occasional lag, however I believe this is more to do with the wireless or Fire TV.

Update 3/10/2016 - I posted a picture of the case with the LED's on, after re-routing some of the wiring and LED's.

APU builds are quite reliant on the speed of the RAM. I would have recommended 2400+ speed.

I'll echo the RAM speed comment. My 7850 performs much better at 2133mhz+. But not a big deal if you aren't a huge gamer. I really like that case. Nice build. +1

Thanks everyone. Yea, in retrospect maybe I should have gone faster RAM... This computer is so much faster than my old home PC, and even my work issued laptop that I cant complain tho. Next time I'll know to go with faster RAM.

Ogammi: Stock processor cooler isn't loud. The three case fans (2x in, 1x out) are all I can hear when they ramp up speed based on the temperature control points I set, but even they aren't too loud.
