Description

Edit: Thank you for all the feedback and comments! You guys are so much nicer than I expected!

WARNING, INCREDIBLE QUALITY OF AN IPHONE 5 CAMERA FOR THE PICTURES. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. sighs This is my first build. Firstly, thank you for clicking on this build! It is very much appreciated! Secondly, prepare for a mini rant and some questions that someone could hopefully answer. Without further ado, lets get to the parts and what I think about them!

CPU: First of all, I'm not an Intel fan. (I can already predict the hate I'm about to get). I find that their processors can just be too expensive, and the motherboards for them don't come cheap either. This is why I went for the AMD FX-8350. I love this processor. It performs greatly in video editing and games, etc. The only problem that I have with it is the default fan. The noise and the heat that it generates is ridiculous, and I'm hoping someone could tell me a way on how to quieten it, or I'm going to have to invest in an aftermarket cooler, maybe the Corsair H55. (I'm not overclocking, btw) I rate the CPU 4.5/5 stars.

Motherboard: I'm not an expert on motherboards. This does what I want it too, so I'm not complaining. I rate the Motherboard 5/5 stars.

Memory: Fast, cheap and reliable RAM. All I needed. I rate the RAM 5/5 stars.

Storage: As a gamer, video editor and graphics designer (all at 14 lol), I use alot of storage. After having a laptop with a 750gb hard drive for 3 years, I was constantly deleting games and programs to make more and more space. This is why I opted to use an SSD for my operating system and Adobe Creative Suite, and used a 1tb harddrive to store all my schoolwork and games. I rate the Storage 4.5/5, as I had some trouble getting windows to detect my hard drive.

Video Card: nVidia Geforce GTX 760. I've had this card for years, just never had enough money to base a build around it. yes, i'm using a CPU from Team Red and a GPU that is usually matched with Team Blue. I'm a #rebel like that. This GPU does all I need it to do. It plays Star Wars Battlefront at 60fps medium/high settings whilst recording at 60 FPS, Counter Strike Global Offensive at 120 FPS at Ultra settings. May I also note that ShadowPlay is awesome. I now need to go to the negative side of this card. It has what my friends and I call the "blowdryer" fan on it. It's basically Gainwards attempt at making the reference card (only one fan). It's either the CPU fan or GPU fan that cause a HUGE amount of noise, however I suspect that it's the CPU fan, because I change the fan speed for my GPU in MSI Afterburner, and the noise doesn't change that much. But still, this card makes noise. Due to the noise, I rate this card 4/5

Case: DO NOT GET THIS CASE. I REPEAT. DO NOT GET THIS CASE. This case is honestly, in my opinion, terrible. It does have space for SSD's and Hard Drives, but the airflow and cable management options are awful. The case comes with 1 120mm fan, and no possible way of tiding up cables. The case's side panels bend very easily, almost to easily. I bent one of them whilst trying to put it back on the case. Once it's bent however, it suddenly becomes as strong as steel, because it is impossible to bend them back to their original shape. Not to mention that the case gets extremely hot directly above and around the CPU, not to mention the fact that it vibrates the hell out of my desk with only 1 fan, let alone the extra 2 I had to buy in a desperate attempt to keep my PC cool. I rate the Case 2/5 stars, because it is just terrible.

Power Supply: Decent enough power supply, however I should have gone with a higher voltage and modular power supply, because cables are everywhere! I rate the Power Supply 4/5 stars, it powers my machine on lol.

Optical Drive: Used to install windows. Does not burn or rip discs, which is annoying. I rate the Optical Drive 4/5 stars, just because it doesn't burn or rip discs.

OS: Windows 7 Pro 64bit. Need I say more? I rate the OS 5/5

Questions: My computer suddenly turns off without warning about twice a day. I have no clue why, or what I should do about it. There is no Blue screen of death, its just like a power cut. except all the electrical powered things in my house work. What should I do?

How do I get the CPU fan quiter?

Conclusion: Thanks for reading/viewing the pictures! Sorry about the image quality, iPhone 5 isn't exactly the best. Please leave a comment expressing your views on my first build! Thanks!

8350 is a good processor fir the money. I agree the need for a better cooler and then overclock that bad boy. Hey why is your video card not in your firest pcie 16 lane? +1 on build. And .......cable management, brother.

  • 1 point

it is in the top pci express lane, thats a ... ide header in between those pcie 1x lanes. shudders

I hate that ide header more than you know.

Dude that is weird. Sorry I didn't research that at all. So I didn't help at all. Dammit man. Ok plus one again. Nope they won't let me vote twice.

I've tried with the cable management ;) non-modular psu combined with the worst pc case for cable management doesn't help ;)

now that you are browsing this site, in the future, look at how other people use some of the parts you consider in their builds and the photos. it helps to see how things fit and may not fit

I've been using this site for a long time, just without an account. I find it fascinating how others can make their build so clean, and then there's just mine :/ XD

lol. your case choice is what really hurt you, but not much you can do now about it. cooler should definitely be first upgrade, then possibly the case as your cabling and the case design can affect your airflow and overall cooling.

Yeah, cpu cooler is next on my list.

Yeah I'm glad you didn't look at mine. I'm terrible at cable management. I call it mismanagement. My kids college build is zip tied and stuffed. Good thing you can't see inside.

It all looks good!

Regarding the power cutoff, that may be from a breaker overload. I have experienced it before with anything from 1000W PCs (my friend's "Skunkworks, Jr." PC) to microwaves. That is most likely the cause, that the power draw is too high, and you need to use a different outlet.

Definitely upgrade the phone, to Android, Blackberry Priv, or a Lumia 950XL (when it launches), all significantly better than any iPhone

I highly advise going with the LG V10 if you can afford it and like big phones.

i have a g4 and recommend getting the v10 as well, if only i had waited 6 more months... two of my friends got the v10 over christmas and love it.

Yeah, when I became a nerd back in late 2011, I realized how terrible they were. Ever since, I have been against them because they are frauds and don't know how to make good products (or design them since they are manufactured by the companies they hate)

  • 1 point

It's the same design, just bigger, thinner and with less battery life.

  • 1 point

I realized how terrible they were.

What are you're arguments?

Some don't want to admit it, but the 6s is the best phone on the market currently. Camera, performance, and aesthetics are all great.

they are frauds

Frauds? How? Because they "stole" other companies ideas? That's how businesses thrive.

and don't know how to make good products

Wow. That doesn't seem closed minded and ignorant at all.

(or design them since they are manufactured by the companies they hate)

Business. And no one ever said explicitly that Apple hates Samsung etc.

  • 1 point

The 6s is slow compared to flagship Android devices, it only stands a chance because iOS has almost no customizability, the camera is not nearly as good as the LG V10's. Aesthetics...Still can be bent easier than most phones (much better than the 6, but still easier than most phones). Decent look, but a random camera bulge that doesn't let it sit flat on a table unless you have a case. They are outdated, behind. And don't even get me started on battery life and their battery case.

Apple is a fraudulent company because they lie about their products. With almost all Windows-based or Android-based products, I have never experienced any lies about product capabilities. The customer service reps know almost no details regarding specifications on the products (I can look up facts on Wikipedia about their products in under 10 seconds, and it takes them over 5 minutes to come up with no answer).

That is why. And much more that I won't waste my week on.

The 6s is slow compared to flagship Android devices,

I beg to differ. So would benchmarks, and real world tests. iOS is on of the most highly optimized OS's available. This is one of the reasons that makes iOS a good OS.

it only stands a chance because iOS has almost no customizability

Wait. What? I don't think I'm picking up what you are putting down. Why is no customization a good thing?

the camera is not nearly as good as the LG V10's

I find the foward facing camera to be a bit better imo. But, not nearly as good is an exaggeration.

Aesthetics

Opinion.

Still can be bent easier than most phones (much better than the 6, but still easier than most phones).

Not like someone would [put this much pressure on a phone...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pjiuf5ftIPY sarcasm

but a random camera bulge that doesn't let it sit flat on a table unless you have a case

The majority of people will get a case.

They are outdated, behind

In specs? That's because it doesn't need powerful specs. It handles things 100% fine with its dual core. Anything above would be overkill. 2gb is also fine for some multitasking.

and their battery case.

Proof of why you shouldn't go to work high lol.

Apple is a fraudulent company because they lie about their products

Proof?

With almost all Windows-based or Android-based products, I have never experienced any lies about product capabilities.

It's not like Microsoft purposely hid the ways to disable their "take all my info and give it to the gov't" or anything shady like that. After all every company but Apple is 100% honest all the time sarcasm

The customer service reps know almost no details regarding specifications on the products (I can look up facts on Wikipedia about their products in under 10 seconds, and it takes them over 5 minutes to come up with no answer).

Give me one good reason why you would go through the hassle to get customer service to give you a spec sheet on the iphone while you could do a quick 3sec search.

And much more that I won't waste my week on.

Keep going lol. I genuinely want to hear some more arguments. (no I'm not instigating)

Response to other comment:

And Apple does hate Samsung,

Proof?

especially if they try to keep milking money from them.

Did you hear that? I think someone just said Basic Business 101.

They started all the lawsuits

All? Remember the iPhone 5 dispute

and the other companies replied.

What did they say?

If Apple stopped, they wouldn't be hating on Samsung,

Business.

the largest and wealthiest company in the world.

haha what? That isn't true. What are you basing your info on?

Walmart takes the lead here. Although Samsung beats Apple, only because Samsung does more than just phones. They have washers and dryers for crying out loud.

This is all coming from an Android enthusiast, and proud Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 for the past 3yrs.

the stock amd cooler is just enough to get you using the computer, but you should definitely get a 212evo or an h55 to cool it off and quiet it down. AMD's don't actually run all that hot when cooled decently and set to allow amd's cool and quiet settings. my eye twitched when i saw that motherboard though. It has some... interesting features in this day and age.

congrats on being an open amd fan, and ignore the open flames the intel camp will give you. Zen will be coming out before too long and should finally move away from the crap that intel puts in their command structure that both have to share as well.

  • 1 point

Firstly, I agree with you on the motherboard. It's an old one, but it does the job. Thank you for appreciating my openness about amd :)

  • 1 point

I have nothing against AMD, even though I'm more of an Intel guy myself, but why do their processor need so much more power than Intel's for similar performance? It's the same situation with their GPUs... I've had a computer with an AMD GPU (back in the days) an AMD Athlon 64 X2, and it was great at the time. It was AMD's first line-up of dual-core processors and I used it from 2005 to 2012, for light-weight games. I then got a new computer for gaming, and I had high hopes for the X4 980, as it was a quad-core with each core being faster than my previous dual-core. I had it coupled with a GTX570, and it was fine... until I got a refurbished PC with an I5-2320... That PC wasn't meant for gaming, it was going to be my workstation. I decided to test what difference it would make if I were to move my GPU and my RAM to that computer, only to realise that it had better gaming performance, despite being slower in theory. And the Intel CPU released 1 month after AMD's... That is why I no longer buy AMD cpu's.

  • 1 point

I have nothing against people who prefer intel, I just like AMD more. To be completely honest, I'm not entirely sure why the CPU's use more power. Oh well, everyone has an opinion :P

  • 1 point

Honestly it's a good thing. If people were only fan of 1 of them, then the other one would go bankrupt and there would be no more competition. That would make the prices even higher and the differences even lower.

  • 1 point

About that CPU stock cooler rattle, I had the same cooler with a high airflow case, I never had issues with rattling or especially high temps either (like it struggled to get to 65) but then again i'm in a cold, dank basement. it was also not especially loud. But check that the cooler is not loose in any of its components and that non of the tightening arms are broken. I eventually upgraded to this however http://pcpartpicker.com/part/arctic-cooling-cpu-cooler-freezer7prorev2 it keeps the fx8350 cool in my cold basement and is remarkably silent!

  • 1 point

None of the components are broken and everything is secure. Its just constant high pitched whine which REALLY annoys me and my family. We can hear it from 2 floors away :/

  • 1 point

sounds like a lemon. Mine was super silent. Complain to AMD and see what they say I guess would be the next move.

  • 1 point

been here, done that - They responded very quickly actually. They said they'd send me another cooler, but recommended for me to get a corsair h60. I think thats what I'm going to do.

  • 1 point

Sounds good, the stock cooler is only so good even if you don't have a lemon so an H60 is a great idea.

  • 1 point

I would consider picking up another one of those RAM Modules and run those babies dual channel

  • 1 point

I have a priority list at the moment (hopefully this will be MoneyDrainer v. 1.2) 1. CPU Cooler 2. RAM. 3. Case I need more RAM for video editing, I might just steal some from my unsuspecting mum's pc though

  • 1 point

haha sounds like a good idea, she won't even know the difference.

  • 1 point

h60 is way better for the money. do not lower the cpu fan speed, but you can lower the clock so your fan will not be as loud. Why not 2 sticks of ram for dual channel, since you do video editing why not 16gb of ram, (but nothing over 16gb because that would me overkill for that cpu) +1 for team red like me. I am suprised that people have not slammed you hard for that psu,(like me). I like the xfx 550watt psu. The case looks decent it, I would have got a nzxt case like for 40-44 bucks. WINDOWS 7 IS THE BEST@#$%

love your build and has confirmed that i hate my case fro a good reason, i already decided on the same card and CPU as you all I need to-do is fit it. i bought my pc as a pre build and will be upgrading soon I hope. the cable management was done for me so its great but dreading adding to it.

Top marks mate and feeling the burning in my wallet already..... :(

If it is an AMD product, expect it to be VERY hot. If I stick with an AMD GPU I will definitely be investing in a liquid cooler for my system to keep it cooler in the near future.

I've used the Corsair H60 on a couple builds for others and it's a really good quality product. I usually recommend it over a bigger and heavier air cooler. You can find it on sale for under $50 also fairly often and will be everything you need to cool your CPU down a bit. I would go with the h60 over the h55. It's newer and looks a lot better IMO.

That PSU is pretty bad. Surprised you rated it so highly. EVGA has some of the best PSU's on the market but that is not one of them. Sadly their cheap PSU's are nearly as bad as their high end PSU's are great.

What are your CPU Temps during idle and load? That CPU with a stock cooler could be getting very hot.

  • 1 point

I can't give you the CPU temps at the moment because I'm at my nans house, but the top of the case is too hot to touch under load. I choose the psu because it was from a reliable company and it was cheap. Thanks for your thoughts though!

  • 1 point

Too bad the case doesn't seem to have a spot for a side panel fan. They help motherboard and CPU temperatures a bit.

  • 1 point

I can argue that it's worse or similar.

Not much attention to detail (no bridge rectifier heatsink).
Bleh 12V rail ripple.
Capacitors that are a step down from the great ones (the EVGA 500W has a worse primary capacitor too).
Not amazing voltage regulation (but 5v rail is pretty good though)
Lower efficiency.
Sleeve bearing fan.
