Description

What up PCMR,

I was able to snag a coffee lake cpu at launch by staying up really late. I don't regret it. lol

So far I am loving the 8400, I don't like overclocking so this was perfect for me.

I will upgrade to 16gb of RAM once the prices of DDR4 come down to earth, I mean $160 for 16gb ram? Really? lol

Anyways, I really enjoy smaller PCs so I am happy with mine. Thanks for stopping by.

I'm planning on getting the 8700k :) How do you like the 8400 so far?

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 3 points 8 months ago

I like it a lot, mainly because I don't like overclocking. Just plug and play. 6 cores is nice for an i5 to pair with my gtx 1070.

chavezgarrett7 3 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

Yea, I'm planning on getting the i7-8600k with a 1070 6gb. I'm excited, but not for another month of so :(

adventureguy 2 Builds -4 points 8 months ago

I would recommend Ryzen 7 instead, what resolution are you going to be playing at?

chavezgarrett7 3 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

I'm getting an i5 anyway. It doesn't matter. 1920x1080

MeanieMartini 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

I'm curious to know why you think he should get a Ryzen 7?

adventureguy 2 Builds 1 point 8 months ago

First of all I thought he was getting an i7 8700K. Second I thought he would be gaming at 1440p because you really shouldn't cash out $300 on a CPU for 1080p gaming. And because I assumed he would be gaming at 1440p or higher, I recommended more cores. See, when you game at higher resolutions, the CPU matters less. You'll barely see a frame difference between the 8600K and 1600 (which is what I'd personally recommend at this price range). Where the CPU DOES matter is in CPU-intensive tasks, which usually depend more on core/thread counts than clock speed, so therefore you should invest in a CPU with more threads always when gaming at higher resolutions. Not to mention that Ryzen runs cooler, consumes less power, and B350 motherboards are extremely affordable. However since he's gaming at 1080p that gets thrown out the window.

"I was able to snag a coffee lake cpu at launch by staying up really late. I don't regret it. lol"

Did you drink plenty of coffee to be able to stay up really late? :)

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Nice one lol

But no I didn't, I'm trying to get away from coffee.

bloodroses75 1 Build 5 points 8 months ago

At least you didn't have to Ryz(en) really early to snag one and instead just stayed up late. ;)

WolfenWings 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I don't know whether to +1 or -1 this one. Lol

bloodroses75 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

lol

annasoh323 2 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

Wow, I didn't even know that mITX Z370 mobos were part of the launch. That's really cool. We of the Kaby Lake i5's salute you. What did you upgrade from?

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Yea I was surprised there were mini-itx boards at launch too. This is a first build, I should have mentioned that lol

annasoh323 2 Builds 3 points 8 months ago

Even more impressive then! Really clean, really powerful build. Also just noticed your profile pic. I give you the "I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite i5 build in the Citadel" award.

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Oh man that brings back memories :)

LITTT

ticonus 2 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

Mmmmmmm oh damn thats such a clean and simple build. Great work

Vicepter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I might get an 8400. How well is it?

Vicepter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Nice

ticonus 2 Builds 0 points 8 months ago

Dude now youre just talking BS, yes the stock 8400 beats most all the ryzen lineup at stock, however once overclock the 8400 and r5 1400 are where that ends, we have seen benchmarks showing this, yes the new intel cpus are good and great value but theres no need to spout BS, the 8400 is in line with a stock 7700/k but not when you overclock them

Do you have any complaints on SF600 psu? I read that some units can be a bit loud.

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

You know I really haven't noticed. Idle I don't think its loud and gaming I can't say since I use earbuds.

adventureguy 2 Builds 1 point 8 months ago

Shame Intel B350 (or whatever it's gonna be called) didn't launch at the same time. This would've been a huge bargain then. But then again it'll probably go out of stock really fast too.

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

yea it sucks

The_Pervert_King 1 point 8 months ago

You have any benchmarks? I would love to hear what this thing can pull off gaming-wise

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Tbh I don't know how to do that lol

Youtube would be more help than me

NakedYo 1 point 8 months ago

The site lists this PSU as incompatible with the case, is that just a glitch or did you have to get some kind of adapter?

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I used an SFX to ATX bracket

-Rusty-Shackleford- 1 point 7 months ago

Do you recall which bracket you used? I'm looking into this same combo.

Thanks in advance!

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 7 months ago

Its the Silverstone one on Amazon.

Arkyo 1 point 8 months ago

GTX 1070 8GB $0....

GamingAsesino 1 point 7 months ago

I am planning on getting almost the same build as you, Im just changing the Asus motherboard for an Asrock, and getting an M.2 SSD with a 1tb hard drive. One question, I read that the cables for the Corsair SF 600w Power supply were short in distance, did you have any trouble at all? Also, how did you're cpu cooler perform so well?

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 7 months ago

Yea the cables are short for the cpu power and 24 pin connections, I used extensions for this. My CPU cooler is more for aesthetics and silence since my CPU is not overclockable so that is why, damn good deal for $20.

johnyboy102 1 point 4 months ago

How has the cooler been working out? what are the temps around? Is it loud? Thanks!

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

Not loud at all, works perfectly fine for this CPU. Temps never go past 62C.

DudeCerealsLife 1 point 3 months ago

clean and beautiful ! did you try streaming or recording how it goes ?

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

No, sorry I do not stream or do any recording of any sort so I can't speak on that.

mac070 0 points 8 months ago

That base clock is absolutely sad.. Even though it boosts to 4GHZ.... Intel needs to get their crap together. But dang that is one nice looking PC man!

Keep in mind you can't directly compare clock speeds across architectures.

AhodShralpy 7 Builds 0 points 8 months ago

My Ryzen 5 1600 will boost up to 3692 MHz without any OC.

ticonus 2 Builds 1 point 8 months ago

same thing for me both with stock cooler and my 212 evo or H55 i had no issue running stock at 3.7ghz, unfortunately I can only keep it cool at a 3.8ghz though

You two are the only ones tho i might get one

dadiman260 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

I would recommend getting an unlocked one. This guy is a bit amd biased but makes a good point about the 8400 chips being a bit too good for the money :P, its basically a silicon lottery with the turbo boost and without an unlocked one you dont even get an option to oc it at the expense of heat etc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O98qP-FsIWo

lowkeyERIC submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Nice! Did you buy a Z370 board too or are you gonna wait for the H/B-series boards next year?
