I've been using blender for a while and my laptop was no longer up to the job so I decided it was time to build a PC. I've not used Windows in nearly twenty years and this is the first PC that I've ever built so overall I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
I started out by picking the case as I wanted something fairly plain and understated. I really liked the black and white theme that Fractal Designs use on their cases so I decided to carry it throughout the rest of the component choices for the build.
I picked the 5820K as I thought that more cores would be beneficial to working in blender, I might be wrong but it seems plenty powerful enough for my needs. Ultimately I chose to go with the GTX 980 Ti as I know it takes a while for new cards to be supported in blender and the current prices for the GTX 1080's are pretty nuts. I also overspecced the motherboard and power supply so that potentially I could add another GTX 980 Ti in future if I feel I need more power.
The old benchmarking file for blender (Mike's BMW) took over half an hour to render on my laptop, on this new machine it only takes 23 seconds! I've also been able to overclock the CPU to a stable 4.3Ghz so when I have to fall back to CPU rendering it's no slouch.
I've also now modestly overclocked the video card. It went from 103.6fps to 113.8fps in Heaven 4.0 and the system's Firestrike score went from 16274 to 17053.
