Description

I have always missed playing CS:GO after I sold my PC in 2017. And since the new Ryzen processors launched in July this year it was time for a new build. I call it the CS:GO FPS MACHINE!

What I will use it for: Gaming: CS:GO Witcher 3

Office: Web browsing Student things

Creative: Editing Photos / Videos Programming

What worked well: Installing Ryzen 5 3600 in MSI B450M Gaming Plus worked well after I updated the BIOS to v19. RAM OC with XMP worked flawlessly, might try manual OC later.

Any problems: At first, the fans were really loud, so I had to set the fan curve manually in BIOS. From time to time, the machine will boot with a blue screen: Windows is gathering information (QR-Code), I have yet to figure out the problem. Sometimes I will get no signal when in game from 5700 XT. This is very annoying and might be driver-related.

Part Reviews

CPU

Very snappy, I love it. Best bang for the buck under 200€. Make sure your mainboard supports it.

Motherboard

This is all I ever needed. I'm not a crazy overclocker nor do I care for VRM cooling with a Ryzen 5 3600. I flashed to BIOS version 19 and it booted right away. I used all of the RAM slots (2) and all of the system fan headers (2). With thick GPUs like the 5700 XT, the PCI_E2 and PCI_E3 (both x1) are blocked so you won't be able to use a network card, not even with a ribbon cable, it's just too tight.

The BIOS for 3rd gen ryzen does not have crazy graphics, but is text based just like in the old days. For me this was all I needed. You will want to set fan curve unless you're hearing impaired.

Memory

Was able to use XMP speed of 3200 just as expected. Works.

Storage

Cheaper than SSD and no cable, there you go.

Video Card

Not satisfied with current driver situation. It's hit or miss with current drivers available. Sometimes games will work perfectly fine, but occasionally I will get black screens (no signal) when I open menus in CS:GO or the game will go completely go black. When I alt+tab, the signal is back.

Case

What a biest of a case. Loved to build in it and has a nice window. The big fan is very quiet, added three more fans mostly for the looks. Temps were about the same.

Case Fan

Nice looking fans, brightness of the red will change depending on fan speed. I used a W-cable to connect to one system fan header of my mobo.

Monitor

What a nice monitor. I love the size, the resolution, the refresh rate, the colours. Was choosing bettween ultrawide 1080p, 1440p or this. Ultrawide 1080p was just not enough pixels for office work. UW 1440p was too demanding on the GPU, so I went with the sweet spot and not regretting it. Most videos on youtube and really anywhere are still 16:9, so you won't miss anything really. For games it would have been nice, but 1440p is nice also. Before buying ultrawide, take a look at one in the store. Most of the are curved and I didn't like how straight lines are bent.

Keyboard

Clicky di Clacky di Clack. I'm glad we have thick walls, otherwise my roommates would strangle me. Typing is really nice, my first mech. keyboard.

Wow that is a super clean setup, good job. Also 155 hz is crazy high

Thanks! I am in the middle of returning my 5700 XT though, so I will try to get a good deal for team green on Black Friday.

Why is that? Is it because of drivers? I've only used a GTX 460 SE and the Nvidia Control panel worked great for me (even thought it is an older version as the 460 SE is no longer supported). Also would a 550 W PSU be good for a system that pulls 349 W on full load? I have a GTX 760 that I got for free a few days ago, but my 450 W PSU can't seem to run it.

Honestly you can't blame the add in board partner for an issue at the chipset driver level

do you mean my comment about 5700 xt pulse? With 19.9.2 driver I've had no issues so far. Let's keep our finger's crossed.

Hey Doctor, do you mind doing updates on the state of the GPU driver situation? Like, once a month or after you have played a wide variety of games?

As of right now, the black screens have got less and less, but still happen occasionally. Now on 19.9.2, don't even know if it's driver related though.

Nice. Definitely let me know if you get to a point when the black screens are really rare. If it doesn't happen, I would contact Sapphire or AMD

Did you reset your CMOS before installing your graphics card?

What is your current setup for your fans? I have the same case and currently, have the front 200mm and a back 140mm fan. What way do you have your fans in the middle running?

they're moving air out of the case since the GPU is pulling air in on the opposite side.

Is the 5700XT holding up? About to get this same card, wondering about the driver situation considering that most people say that they're experiencing no problems.
