Description

added a second 7970 ghz vapor x 3gb. Got the cpu at 4.5hz and 1.325v. Got the gpu clock at 1200 and vram at 1600 and gpu volt at 1300. Ram is clocked to the specified 1600mhz and cas 8 (8-8-8-24). I got the perfect pixel crossover 27q 2560x1440 monitor on ebay from redcap for $400. It came quickly and is indeed perfect. You have to get an eu to us adapter plug though. I got 3 for $5 on ebay. Crysis 3 is beautiful in 1440p. Getting 60 fps in crysis 3 with 8xmsaa and all ultra (the highest possible settings). very pleased with every part, although if i did it again for the cost i would have gotten a water cooler. Zalman is ok though....its quiet and at 4.5 ghz keeps it below 85c on prime 95. corsair water cooled is the way to go. Also get the absolute best thermal paste that does alot, heard gelid and indigo extreme and collobarate labs ultra or something were best.also get high quality case fans and make sure they point the right way before u screw them in! I waited for each part to go on sale so saved about 10-$20 each part, saved at least $300 that way or more. Make sure u turn off intel turbo boost if u are overclocking cpu.

edit* added more ram, and a EVGA gtx 1080 FTW acx 3.0 GAMING GPU, a hybrid SSHD 1tb. super awesome. overclocked monitor to 64hz lol.

Great build I really enjoyed browsing your photos. I am happy to see your system is working well. The first picture or so where you show cables I was thinking oooooh dear lord its going to be a birds nest but no the final picture looks great. Great work!! Happy gaming.

Just incase anyone looks at the pictures with the motherboard on the antistatic bag and thinks of doing the same thing with putting your MB on the anti static bag and tries to do a boot test DO NOT DO THAT!! the black lines have conductive material in them and if you end up pressing the MB to hard into it you could short something out if you try to boot the system with it on the bag. NEVER put electronics you plan on powering on antistatic bags, don't do it. Put it on the cardboard box they come with if anything.

Props to everyone who studies up on parts compatibilty and benchmarks for days and days to build their pc on their own. Its an accomplishment worthy of a medal of some sort!

Thanks! First time buildin one. Just looked at reviews, forums, and youtube videos lol. The instructions that come with the parts are usually japanese or korean badly translated and horribly unspecific. And alot of forums people talk in confusing tech talk and dont simplify things. But i got it done without to much hassle. The only thing that sucked was hiding the cords, and putting on the cpu heatsink fan. But those just took some fiddling. Installing two hardrives is a pain in the rear. First i couldnt get the ssd to recognize, and i did and put windows on it. Now the old OS drive, an hdd, wont show in the disk management. Ugh.Still cant get windows 8 to recognize the second drive but i hopefully will fix it this weekend.

Was going to destroy your picture with McAfee, but I saw you got it free and will sell it. You are redeemed...

Ok so windows updated and now it recognizes both hard drives! Everythings running perfect now yay! Now on to the overclocking! Almost figured it out. Btw this case is great the front fans snap in and one came doa but they are sending me a replacement thanks nzxt! I reeally like the case. The zalman and the vapor x are both very quiet running to me, no whine like others say. Im running guild wars 2 on every setting maxed at 1080p and i get between 50 and 80 fps depending where i am. When my 1440p monitor gets here ill post fps on that. Also will update fps when i overclock all the parts. Alot of fun! I chose parts for best performance for the price. As nvidia is 150 more for a gtx 680 with same performance and 3570k is 220 and almost equal to the 120$ more i7s, i went with that. Sapphire radeon ghz 7970 came with rebate and free crysis 3 and bioshock infinite (deal is still available at newegg) xfx ghz 7970 and sapphire 3gb 7970 ghz have good value. Overclock well and beat 680s most of the time!

Hey, could you post pictures of your monitor? I'm curious about it - is it one of those Korean monitors off of ebay? I hear a lot of good things about them, and if it is one of those I'd like to hear your opinion on it.

Got them up now. Its awesome .

  • 1 point

Yes i will put up pics of the monitor as soon as it gets here. I ordered one but then they were out of the perfect pixel versions and they had slow shipments on the way because of korean new years holidays a week ago, so they gave me a refund and i just repurchased one on ebay. It should be here next week. I cant wait......

how do u like the case i am thinking about getting one

  • 1 point

The case is great. I had no problems at all. It did come with one fan broken but nzxt sent me two more for free with no probems. If you want to crossfire this case can do it but its gonna be super tight. Get thinner versions of graphics cards.

  • 1 point

The thing that I really liked was the dual front fans and the storage spot on the top

  • 2 points

Those front fans are quick remove type. Easy peazy

Also the wiring and holes for wiring are really well sorted.

  • 1 point

what do you mean crossfire is super tight, ive got two R7770's in mine without an issue, you can run 3-way crossfire/SLI in this case if you want no problem.

The gpu i have is a sapphire vapor x 3gb 7970 ghz. Its very thick with the fans, the first gpu covers up the 1st and 2nd pcie slot. The third looks to barely have enough room for a dual crossfire i measured it and im pretty sure two would fit. Theres no possible way with the thickness of a aftermarket gpu cooler that u could get 3 of these gpus. Its not a full tower. Also maybe 3 reference cards would.

i hope you don't plan on keeping McAfee as your anti-virus, its horrid, ive got Kaspersky, Malware-Bytes, AVG, and Security Essentials on mine, never will i touch Norton or McAfee, they are one of the worst...

I'm deciding on my GPU, do you know if your GPU is voltage locked / shipping locked?

I have adjusted my voltage with sapphire trixx free software to overclock, but it comes out high enough factory oc volts that i turned the volt back to stock.

  • 1 point

Hey awesome build. Thinking of getting the same GPU, how is that working out for you?

  • 1 point

Its pretty sweet. Runs 2560x1440p screen and the newest games on highest settings at around 20 to 30 fps. And even at 20 it feels like perfectly smooth gameplay. Its plays less strenuous games like gw2 and black ops 2 at like 120 fps on ultra

Just installed a second sapphire 7970 ghz in crossfire. Thought i had a dead 2nd pcie slot but turned out it wasnt going 100% in the slot because the mobo was bending when i pushed card in and i couldnt tell with the first card blocking my view. Held the back of the mobo and got it seated correctly. Had some stuttering but found out i had to disable ulps with regedit (registry edit) but i disabled it with sapphire trix instead. Also was using two bridge connectors like the mobo manual suggested was neccessary for a crossfire, but a single bridge works better in some cases. Will do more testing tonight.

how good is that cooler? I am debating between this and the hyper 212 plus? which should I get. Any comments will be appreciated.

I think it is the only thing its great for is looks and for how quiet it is. Silent up to halfway turned up and quiet on high. It also has a cool small speed knob adjuster u stick on the outside of pc, dont think many r adjustable for when u not running heavy programs and want it silent ect. There are better ones for overclocking but i like it. I could only get my 3570k to 4.5 max without going over 85c on the prime 95. May just be my cpu chip, some of the same chips may get 4.5 with alot lower voltage and so lower heat. Luck of the draw with how good they overclock.hyper Evo 212 may be a few degrees cooler than this gets based on reviews. If u overclocking above 4.5 ur best bet is watercooling. Or at least a very high end air cooler.highest u can hope to get with air is maybe 4.6-4.8 if u r lucky and got the best chip air and paste. If u want higher than that get one of the higher end water coolers

The new r9-290x cards look sick, wish i could trade this for that. Also then 780ti's are going to be killer when they come out....until the r9-290x ghz edition comes out lol

  • 1 point

Well mines good tho. The only thing i would need more power for would be going with triple 1440p monitors, even then u would probably need tri-fire or 3 way sli 780s or titans or 290xs. Or for 4k. But thats like a $5000 monitor lol
