This is my upgraded build from my OgreLord build. https://pcpartpicker.com/b/rfRJ7P This is the true sequel to my 2014 build. Such an improvement! https://pcpartpicker.com/b/r4GG3C

For this build, I swapped out my 980 Ti and i3-8350k for a hybrid 1080 Ti and an i9-9900k.

I also did some extra cable management (a decent improvement from my previous attempt) and moved my radiator from my preferred top mount to a front mount. I was a bit worried about having heat from the 9900k hitting my GPU, but with the hybrid GPU, it's no issue. So everything worked out well in the end!

So far I've run into no real issues outside of the 9900k running hot under load (mid 80s at 5.0GHz @ 1.315v)

This thing has been blazing fast when it comes to both gaming and video rendering. I couldn't be happier! On top of that, I am finally getting the most from my 144Hz 1440p monitor, which I wasn't really able to before.

A side note about some of the prices: I took advantage of a Wells Fargo credit card. Spend $3k in 3 months and get $300 back on top of any other rewards earned. If anyone banks with them, I'd suggest looking into it!

I've got some comparisons up here against my OgreLord build in case anyone wanted to see the performance boost. All games were run using all maxed settings outside of Anti-Aliasing at 1440p. The only exception was the "High" preset for FFXV, which uses AA.

If anyone has any questions or comments, let me know!

Part Reviews

If you're into both gaming and other CPU intensive tasks, this processor is fantastic. I would say if you're looking into strictly gaming, especially beyond 1080p, this CPU may not be for you with its high price-tag.

Video Card

Quiet and powerful! Already overclocked by EVGA out of the box, but you can push it a few inches forward on the core, and I was able to boost the memory by 500MHz past stock.

The comfiest pair of headphones I've ever owned. Audio quality isn't the best, but for it's (original) price range, I can't give these headphones enough love.

where in god's name did you get a hybrid 1080ti for 450$?

edk1010 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I took off some of the price of my parts due to the deal I got with my credit card. The gpu actually cost $650.

Tuskeyemer 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

ah that makes a bit more sense lol

Do you recommend the ram? I'm looking for a high frequency, low timings kit for gaming.

edk1010 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I do! Personally I think if you could snag a 3200MHz kit, you wouldn't be in bad shape at all. One thing I noticed with this kit is that my performance has dropped a bit going from my 4 core to my 8 core cpu. Dunno why.

That's not right...

edk1010 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Care to elaborate?

the i9 9900k is the fastest gaming cpu on the market right now. There is no reason you should see any performance drop

edk1010 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

In terms of RAM benchmark scores, yeah I agree. I wonder if it has to do with the fact I have a z370 board. But I don't really know how to test those things!

8BITADDICTION 1 point 4 months ago

Did you create that LED Floor? If not, where did you get it?

edk1010 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

It's actually a part of the case that I have!

Can the x62 handle the 9900k at 5GHz or higher?

edk1010 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 3 months ago

@5GHZ it can, but the cpu does get pretty toasty when using AIDA64. Mid to High 80s. But under normal "intensive" loads I usually see it in the mid to high 70s.

AliMohamad 1 point 3 months ago

Thank u so much I'm pretty unsure if I should go to the x62 or the noctua stuff I want the best thermals with something that looks good and doesn't interfer with my ram

Where did you get that cheap for a i9 9900k?

edk1010 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 3 months ago

I got it at it's usual price, but I subtracted some of the price due to a deal I had with my credit card. I wish I could find it for that cheap!
