Description

I have an arcade cabinet that I use for playing a variety of games and it died recently. So I needed a replacement pc for cheap. I had an old Radeon HD 7850 that I wasn't using. I needed something very cheap that could play most of my games on steam and potentially function as a HTPC. I was very happy with the results. It can play tomb raider without any issues. It actually scored better on the tomb raider benchmark than my gaming laptop that has an i7 and a gtx770m!!!!

+1 for the 5350 combined with R7850 I'm building a nespc with the 5350

Ok, I overclocked it to 2.4ghz. Now I get an average 58.8 FPS on tomb raider benchmark. The overclock was VERY simple. I just had to update the BIOS on this motherboard and then select from either 2.3 or 2.4 ghz OC. All the other settings were automatic. This made a night and day difference in performance. I am VERY VERY happy!!!!

wait? It is that easy to overclock? and I thought only Asus motherboard supports overclocking for AM1 platform. Wow, now I want to build one too!

yup, it was that simple. The processor still runs very cool too. around 30c

Did you have to change the drive mode to IDE? When I overclocked using the same MOBO, because the PCI-E lanes are part of the CPU, it was unable to use AHCI - the increased PCI-E clock messed with the scheduling.

Awesome to see the 5350. Hows it working for you?

It's working well. No complaints so far

Nice to see another AM1 build. Sounds like the 7850 is running ok with only x4 PCI-E lanes. Does the little cpu fan get noisy whilst gaming?

Ya, the 7850 is running very well. I'm sure I'll have issues with more CPU intense games but the GPU intense games run great. Shadows of Mordor and Tomb Raider are VERY playable. I haven't played extensively. So there could be some slowdown but the Tomb Raider bench mark was very promising. If memory serves me right, it averaged 36 FPS with a peak of 54 FPS during the benchmark.

I barely hear the fan. It's a VERY quiet system. I ran furmark on it and there is a slight increase in fan noise but not much. Definitely quieter than my PS4!!!

A nice build . Only thing that I would say needs a change, that you've already probably realized is getting modular PSU ;)

LOL! YES! I started to squeeze everything in there and I immediately wished that I would have spent an extra $5 and bought a modular PSU!!!

I think my next step will be to OC it a little bit. Not too much since it's such a small case and I don't want to buy a fancy cooling system. But maybe push it up to 2.5 ghz and see what kind of performance increase I can get out of it.

This seems a lot like what I'm looking for as a steam big picture/xbmc pc.
