Description

This is my overkill gaming build story.

It all started out with my desire to SLI two 980ti’s. I couldn’t come up with a cool name like some others have. Until…

I discovered the ASUS Maximus VIII Formula… then it was all over, I just had to build the most overkill gaming system, with RGB, that my wallet could handle.

This motherboard is the most expensive motherboard I have ever even thought about purchasing. It was a scary purchase and I was sweating the shipping process hoping it wouldn’t arrive DOA. My hopes were answered and my motherboard showed up with no issues and installing it was a breeze. This thing is heavy! With a steel back plate, EK Hybrid VRM Cooler, and thermal armor it definitely pulls its own weight. The LED lighting system is super simple to use and looks brilliant. The UEFI is purely magnificent in customizing your build to exacting specifications.

Once I purchased my two 980ti’s and the mobo, then came the impressive i7-6700k. This processor was a big upgrade from my previous FX-9370 that I was using. The improvements in IPC alone could have convinced me to spend the amount of money I did. I mean compared to almost 100% CPU usage coming from my 9370 during some gaming sessions all the way down to around 20% on the 6700k. WOW

That 6700k wasn’t going to stay cool for very long without a nice cooler, instead of opting for a more budget friendly air cooler I told myself “if this is overkill right? Why not spend more money?” so I landed upon the NZXT Kraken x61 which was a perfect fit for its 280mm radiator design and RGB pump cover.

But I needed to find a decent RAM kit and SSD to keep the speeds going for as long as technology allows. Which leads me to the Samsung 850 EVO 1tb and the Corsair LPX 3000mhz. Both of these units were purely purchased off biased desires for an almost all black design with minimal flash and my love for these brands. EDIT Turns out the Corsair LPX RAM I purchased doesn't work with this mobo... facepalm... I returned them, and picked up a kit of Corsair Dominator Platinum 2800mhz. Works flawlessly!

None of these parts could even work together if it wasn’t for electricity. The EVGA 850W P2 is the most logical and best purchase I have ever made in my history of buying power supplies. I made sure I spent the extra money to buy EVGA’s own individually sleeved cable kit and I don’t regret it. Those cables are amazing. The power supply is super quiet, and the best part, its manufacturer is Super Flower!!!

Let’s be honest here though, anyone could buy these parts and put them in a case and light it up with a few LED strips. This wasn’t going to be another one of those. Introducing the NZXT S340 Razer Edition, this case is beautifully crafted and the additions to the original make it that much better. The green lighting and the matte finish with a tinted side window is absolutely stunning in person!

What’s a beautiful case and expensive parts without something to cool them all? Noctua is well known for producing high quality fans with low noise. With the only caveat being the ugly brown color scheme. Once I found out they make an Industrial model and they’re black in color, I was sold! Adding into the case three 140mm Noctua Industrial PPC 2000 rpm fans and one 120mm turned this Green Demon into The (cool) Green Demon.

Edit 2: Updated photos with new ASUS PG348Q Monitor

Part Reviews

CPU

Impressive performance and amazing temps! Good Job Intel!

CPU Cooler

Quiet, no pump noise, and amazing radiator and hose quality. CAM software is a little wonky but overall a very nice cooler.

Thermal Compound

It's Thermal Paste... great packaging and very cool temps.

Motherboard

I wish I could give this board 6 stars! Why didn't any other motherboard manufacturers think of doing this before? RGB Lighting and thermal armor with an EK VRM cooling solution! Brilliant!

Storage

I will forever use Samsung SSDs. This is my 3rd one and won't be last.

Video Card

Powerful card, can play any game at 1080p at Ultra,Max, or whatever other high end settings you can imagine.

Case

The S340 is in my opinion the best case for building in. It's very easy and roomy. One con I will put on this case is the paint isn't very thick and chipped off when screwing in the rear thumb screws.

Power Supply

Quiet with the eco mode turned on and its one of the most highly rated PSUs out there

Case Fan

Beautifully crafted fans, loud at full speed but very nice once under 1300 rpm. Can go into super low rpm modes like 200 rpm no problem

This processor was a big upgrade from my previous FX-9370

I should say so. Did you cast the FX into the fire from whence it came?

mlach 4 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Didn't have to. The FX more than likely spontaneously combusted.

Colomon submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

HAHA its actually sitting next to me right now in my old build thats still together as a backup

pegotico 2 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Very nice build!!! +1

You should definitely get some chromax accessories for your noctua fans. Either green or black would look great with your build.

ComputerBubbles 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Holy crap man. Nice build. Why did you not go with the H440 Razer case?

Colomon submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

My old case was a Corsair 650D, the H440 is approximately the same size. I was looking for something smaller. Hence the S340 haha

amat17 1 point 13 months ago

You might want to put 32gb of ram for the full power of the 980 ti's because it's recommended 16 for 1. Good build otherwise.

Colomon submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

I haven't heard of that suggestion before... source? I'm interested to know, if it's true I'll for sure get another kit of dominator 32gb

amat17 1 point 13 months ago

It should say on the box or in the manual for the 980 TI now don't trust me completely but I own a 980 TI and saw on the box saying it's "recommended." But don't trust me completely I could be wrong.

Ruckus1025 1 point 13 months ago

Yo Bud, how many Pcie lanes do you have left rocking 2 Gtx980ti? and the SSD? and how many lanes ssd take up and a PCIE SSD? let me know please thanks

cuz i kno 6700k doesn't have a lot of lanes, so would the GPU be at x8 x8?

Colomon submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

With my 980Ti's in SLI they're only using 16 pcie lanes for a 8x/8x GPU setup. I believe the 6700k has 20 pcie lanes available so I'm clear there. The SSD is just a SATA SSD not a pcie. The SATA SSDs don't use pcie lanes. You could if you wanted run a M.2 SSD or pcie SSD and 2 way SLI and you would then be using all 20 pcie lanes.

Hope this helps.

Tryhardminer45 1 point 10 months ago

Dang dude, im on a 1800 budget, but if i had more i would definately go for something like yours!

Colomon submitter 2 Builds 1 point 10 months ago

Haha 1800 is a very nice budget for a build you can do a lot. My previous build was around 1400-1500 and it served me for 3 years. Thanks for the comment!

Ryfi 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

I know it's been a while, but I cannot find this anywhere. Do the LEDs on the case require their own molex? How does one set those up?

Colomon submitter 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

the case has its own female molex cable hooked up so all you would need to do is just plug it into your power supply.

Colomon submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

I was going to actually but the noctua's have a higher static pressure to keep my CPU cool :)
