pretty sure he could've gotten a cheap 8gb stick for around that price.

ankousmachine 2 Builds 4 points 44 months ago

my thoughts exactly, the pc im building right now has 8 gb ram at 1866 mhz for 60 bucks lol.

Fair enough, but any reason why it's not a 1866 and why less RAM? 8GB would help more but I totally understand if this is due to budget. The waiting game for buying a single or a pair of 8GB RAM that is below or close to 50 dollars takes quite some patience. Or I guess if you like watching the Stock Market, it feels the same way for watching part prices... Well... Maybe.... In a sense.

I know these series of APUs DO love a pair of 1866 RAM and more RAM since the system RAM is going to be used up. (I have been working on a A6 recently and is below your version) with the A6-5400k alone , no dual GPU or a discrete GPU, will use by a default of 0.7 System RAM. So basically, the RAM will only have 3.2 if 4GB or 7.2 if 8GB of available, usable memory. The integrated graphics alone uses System RAM. So one could also use 1GB of System RAM if one adjusts the video buffer from the BIOS. This has helped some lag issues for those who have experienced it before with these APUs. Not saying you are since I have no idea how it's working for you or your father but sounds like it's working good.

I'm certain you have known this. I just would like to understand a bit better upon your decision. Otherwise it's a good build. I'm sure your father appreciates you for building him a new computer!

Right System Requirements I do know about but I understand. I was just curious if there was another reason but no worries.

Overall good choice of components (possible exception of the RAM - you could likely get more of it and that helps on heavy multitasking or some cheaper one without any noticeable difference). Though I honestly don't know what you were expecting from a case under $30.
The stuff they praise so often is twice to three times as expensive and does indeed blow the little crippled case out of the water.

Out of curiosity, what was wrong with the Fractal case? I'm planning on getting one in the future so I assume that this is just a single issue with a particular case model? Or perhaps you purchased used?

Why would you get AMD graphics for a Linux system? AMD has a very bad track record with Linux...

liammc submitter 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

AMD said the will start to make drivers soon so most of those problems will be fixed for open source software. AMD works well with zron it runs steam games good and YouTube videos and DVDs at a good fps and has not crashed or given any error with AMD and has ran for days at a time so zron likes AMD just saying that the made driver that works well

They work, but they don't reach the same level of performance they would under windows. There is a difference between 'working' and 'performing' after all. Seriously, you can look up the performance problems with linux/amd. It's pretty prominent. NVidia cares about us though, which is nice.

They are decently close together. Intel has the single thread performance market, and AMD has the multicore/thread market.

However, the AMD created drivers on Linux are literally no longer in the software repos because they're that bad. You can build them yourself though. Even the community drivers don't measure up to performance on windows.

A driver is a driver, no matter the OS. It connects the hardware to the kernel, so unless Mint uses some crazily modified, performance enhancing, custom driver, which I doubt, or your performance is probably not as good.

Either way, it won't really matter, if its just for internet browsing and a flash game or two.
