Description

Figured it was time to upgrade my crusty 7 yr old machine with a AMD 4850 in it -- I realized this when I tried to play the new Doom at 5 fps :( Loving the current modern LED and minimalist builds so tried to learn as best as I could to keep it clean and running killer. Also loving the jump to 144 hz. My doom gaming has jumped from 720P 5 fps to 1440p 140 fps -- fun? Thanks again for the community's contributions to help me learn and get something sweet going on.

CPU is OC'd to 4.6 GHZ GPU OC'd to 2106 MHZ

Awesome build man, love all the lights!! :) I too am on a crusty old machine, a five-year-old Mac Mini in my case, so you beat me at crustiness. I too am planning to build a PC, only I want it to be a killer digital painting machine (PS is my game LOL). Can't wait to experience what that jump in capability will feel like.

Do you think you can take some more photos with the lights on, and maybe some of the interior of your PC? I'd love to ogle the details of the build.

your setup is gorgeous. I'm a minimalist myself and just love it. Great art too. I really like the LED wall wash. Thanks for posting the link, I'm going to take a look. What's the headphone stand? Looks really nice with USB ports too.

Great looking setup! That case is great, hides the psu and allows great cable management, very clean looking. +1

just curious, what temps are you getting in your cpu benchmarks with that cooler/case?

What is that mousepad? I am looking for an alternative to the Razer Goliathus cause it wouldn't fit with my planned build's color scheme. Also, how's that mouse treating you?

  • 1 point

The mouse is incredible, can't tell it's wireless at all! Been playing Doom and Siege without a hitch! And the battery lasts forever (30+ hrs).

Mousepad here: https://www.amazon.com/White-Extended-Gaming-Mouse-Mat/dp/B014OOWDPC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469369563&sr=8-1&keywords=white+extended+mousepad

The entire setup is nice. While my PC build is complete, my home-office isn't set up yet. I intend on building something like yours overall, with a minor changes of my own. Where did you get your L-desk? Can you share the brand/model?

This is very pleasing and inviting workspace. Great job!

Nice! I'd recommend a monitor uparade with that much power. 144 hz is too good!

Definitely! I'm looking at a 4K monitor but I need to buy everything else first, getting a 4k on my rig might melt my cpu lol. Going to main a 4K screen and have a side 2K monitor for browsing and streaming.

Very nice build...Very nice! Phanteks just makes such nice cases....your part list is almost flawless in my opinion.

So, just out of curiosity...I see you have your CPU oc'd at 4.6...just curious what you have your voltage set at? When it comes to Skylake CPU's (and Kaby Lake) there seems to be a much larger variation of voltages than Haswell.

Dude, i'm envious of your setup! :)

Nice build! How you liking your Acer monitor? (i'm just a bit unsure about 144hz and what it takes to push to it)

Dang we need AMD to release their next gen Polaris gpus to keep Nvidia pricing in check. Nvidia pricing sucks!

Honestly everything is night n day from my previous setup. Once you go 144 hz, you don't go back! The moment I turned it on the difference was quite noticeable even while using the mouse on my desktop/web pages, super smooth fps!

  • 1 point

Cool...but here's the conundrum that I see. It seems like you will always need to have a top end gpu capable of pushing well above 60fps to begin to take advantage of 144hz. Agree? So as games advance, one will always be forced to constantly upgrade to top end gpu (read expensive) to continually enjoy the bonuses of 144z. Agree?

And if that is true, then what i see the decision to roll 144hz (one time expensive) also means necessity to continually upgrade top end gpu (continually expensive).

One-time expensive + continually expensive = EXPENSIVE! That is where i'm stuck. Otherwise I would pursue 144hz.

Please correct me if my logic and assessment is off-base. I would love to know differently.

I think in the next year or two you'll see parity with 100 fps gaming and 1440p on most games. The push to make 4k the new 'high end' will be critical to the success of 1440p. I mean, look at 1080p? I remember when I quit gaming, 1080p was pretty close to the gold standard and cards barely hit golden FPS numbers with that -- now most folks will likely ignore 1080p benchmarks and focus on 1440p or 4k. With the games I play most right now, I am not worried at all. Plus you have other games coming out (Quake Champions) where developers are promising high octane gaming at 120 fps+ so I am not too worried. Games like the Witcher, yeah, but everyone will be in the same boat with those games.

Also, one item you left out is whether you are focused on Ultra quality for several years at 144 hz/fps -- in that case, likely won't happen. But, if quality isn't your primary concern always the ability to drop down quality.

Really depends on all you care about and your budget.

  • 1 point

Awesome, thanks for the reply. Yeah is get your points, cool.

No i'm not worried about ultra, i mean i could care less the accuracy of the steam coming off the frog in the bottom left corner of my screen. Know what I mean? ;)

But definitely I value smooth seamless detailed vibrant graphics, even when in a major scrum.

That and I think you've helped take me 1 more step towards 144hz.

You can set a custom price for the card to show what you paid. So people can see which one you have.

4.6 is pretty average for 6700k? And, really the 6700k series is MEANT to be overclocked. We are on a hardware enthusiast site aren't we? :)
