Description

I wanted to build a new home theater PC but I wanted something unique that would fit with my home theater setup. I love the look of the Xbox One S console and decided to try building a home theater PC inside of an Xbox One S housing. I reached out to my friend Ed who mods Xbox consoles and he happened to have an extra housing laying around.

After some careful measuring, I figured out that it was possible to fit a mini ITX motherboard and a low-profile graphics card inside the console.

The first step was to build a base that the Motherboard, SSD and GPU would mount to. Once the components were mounted on the base it was secured to the bottom of the console housing. The power button was then wired to the motherboard to allow it to turn on and off the computer.

Since I was not going to be using the cd drive slot we decided to place an LED strip in its place and connect it to an Arduino controller. We wired the eject button on the front of the console to the Arduino controller to allow it to change the color of the LED strip

I had a lot of fun with this project and I think it turned out great. Please check out the video links below.

We will soon secure the Downfall of the Console Rebellion and Convince Microsoft to Kill the Xbox in favor of a PC Like HTPC to replace it and make all titles for PC XD.

Get Ready!

The Youtube Civil War Conflict must be resolved first before we move on to destroy the Console Nations! The Consoles have started a civil war on Youtube and we must assist our Allies!

So Lets get out all the Bad Boys and start sending GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Bombers on them and see how they like their FPS at -1 and 144p!

Well damn, that's crazy inventive. Do you game on it at all or is it strictly home theater?

  • 7 points

My intention with this build is to use it for home theater. I already have a gaming pc and I don't see myself gaming on this one that often. That being said I did load Doom on it just to test it out and it seems to be handeling high settings at 1080p just fine. I'm hoping to find time to test it's gaming performance more thoroughly and run some benchmarks soon.

Love the idea of this build! Are you thinking about selling these maybe :D even if we payed for the craftsmanship that went into building it ;DD (Add $100 to hardware cost) If the "pc" itself costed around $600 to make, I'd pay $700 to buy one. I want one so bad, hmu if youre willing to do this :D

  • 1 point

Parts cost is $703 (Not including the housing) and you'll pay $700, because he would built for free? lol

But maybe, cost could be lowered around ~$50 or more with G4560 and a 128GB SSD.

what are the temps on that gpu, seeing as it has nearly no airflow

  • 1 point

He mentions in his build video that he went back after the rig was completed and added two 40mm extraction fans gpu side to help pull the hot air away and that helped a lot.

This is one of the coolest builds I have seen in my build browsing career! How long did it take to build it? +1 for sure!

Also, I was looking at using the same motherboard in a build for a friend of mine. Did the wireless antenna come with the motherboard or did you have to buy your own? It’s probably a stupid question, but I’ve got to make sure you know!

I just built an HTPC into a Node 202 using some of the same parts. I'm seriously considering attempting to copy this. My son would lose his mind if I transplanted our (really mostly his) HTPC into an Xbox One.

  • 1 point

I'm nearly speechless. I know that there has been a build that was built into an original XBOX, but to fit full desktop setup into the frame of an XBOX One S is a spectacular achievement. I say good job to this masterpiece.

On a side note, I think that you should just for fun, try to make another one that instead of housing an i3 7100, housing an i7 7700K or R7 1700 and putting 16GB of RAM and a Zotac Mini 1080. I'm not saying right away, but I think that that would a very good side project for you since you have already gotten the skill of putting normal parts in a small area.

This build is insane. How did you mount the GPU sidways? I see the PCI- E x16 riser cable, but did you physically screw the card to the case xbox plastic on the whatever you call it? But also how did you mount the MoBo to the case? Finnaly how did you drill the holes for the rear? Thanks, I am hoping to do something simaler.

I like it, but I'd have to have the Blu-Ray drive. Not having one for a home theater system is like buying a car, but not putting in a radio: Sure, it's not technically needed, but I'm sure as hell not buying, or in this case building, a car without it.

why i3 though? still awesome console build

Because they are like underclocked i5s for half the cost.

  • 1 point

ummmm... 4 threads =! 4 cores. Plus i3s have higher clock speeds. Also, the g4560 is like an underclocked i3 and costs about half the price and i3s are about 50% to 100% of an i5 cost-wise. (7100 vs 7600k and 7350k vs 7400)
