Description

Hello everyone my name is Andrew. This is my first custom build ever. Previous to this i had an Alienware Mx14 r2 laptop that I've been using for last for 3 years. The laptop is still very fast but the graphic card (650m) can not keep up with the new games coming out today. Therefore, I decided to build this gaming PC because i was tired of playing games, mainly FFXIV on lowest graphics and barely getting 30 fps.

I wanted to build a PC that was future proof and that would be able to play games coming out in the next few years on at least high if not ultra settings and 60 fps. Moreover; i wanted to make sure i could keep upgrading the PC if needed for the most graphically demanding games.

I was working with a budget and this is what i came up with. Let me know what you guys think? Any tips, recommendations, and suggestions? Feel free to let me know and Thanks for your time

Cheers.

hi atown,

I like a lot about your build, I do not have much experience with computer builds but I think your build is very solid and well thought out. Some things I would have changed would be:

  • the cooler: that air cooler is really well reviewed but I would have spent extra money on a water cooler, and got this one 'Cooler Master Nepton 240M 76.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler' for better overclocking. For stuff like the case, the PSU and the cooling, personally I would be more inclined to spend some extra money as they do not become outdated anywhere near as fast as the graphics card, cpu etc, the H100 has been around for ages and is still a great cpu water cooler.

  • the ram: I would have got cheeper ram (Kingston 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory), doesn't look as cool but in terms of performance faster ram is not meant to do much, so says linus :P (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWgzA2C61z4) so could save yourself 20$ there.

  • the graphics card: I would have gone with an R9 390, again because someone on youtube told me, but I trust their reviews (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9cKZiJw6Pk).

  • maybe the monitor: in the R9 390 review you can see it got higher than 100fps for a lot of games with ultra settings on (for 1080p), I wouldn't get a bigger monitor but I think I would get one with a higher refresh rate like a 1080p 120hz monitor, to be able to see the higher fps. Although, the fps for witcher 3 was 59fps so I don't know how long the higher hz would be useful (with new titles coming out).

that's my two cents, 1 up from me :).

I really wouldn't beat yourself up over getting the GTX 970. The overclockability and efficiency of it is really awesome and I'd pay a bit extra for a quieter cooler card! Oh wait, I actually did :p

Any reason it's not in the top slot though? Really wouldn't matter that much but just curious.

I'm not sure Spencer i just grabbed the gtx 970 because it was best bang for your buck and it was also on sale at my local PC shop here.

Hey Mmurp30 i'll keep your suggestion in mind when i decide to overclock or add another vid card in to upgrade the fan and psu.

For now its very quiet and stays very cool idle about 32C and when under load about 60-65C, but definitely something to think about as i move forward on upgrading this PC thanks for your reply.

Question: Is there a place on the back of the MB plate of the Core V41 Case to install a 2 1/2 IN SSD Drive? I want to remove all cages from front and hide the SSD drive!! Tks David N.
