Description

I use it for Gaming: Crysis 3, Wolfenstein the New Order, Battlefield 3, Tom Raider, Alien vs Predator 3 ...etc.

I also use it for my job, system administrator, when I work from home.

It works like a charm for everything: it is so quick, it starts in around 10 seconds, and the apps and web browser windows launch in a fraction than in an usual computer.

I bought the two most expensive parts second hand (i5 for 80 EUR and XFX-Ghost for 200 EUR) so I paid total 800 EUR for the build plus additional 150 EUR for each of the three monitos. Also I already had Windows 8 back from 2012 that costed me 80 EUR as a promotion when it was just released, then I did the free upgrade to Windows 10 on 2016 when I built it.

The reason I chose to build this in 2016, is because a friend told me that the i5+ Radeon HD-7970 (XFX-Ghost) is still such a good tandem for some miracolous reason, as all games do still play fine with those two. Also note that the Radeon HD-7970 was "la crème de la crème" of video cards back in 2012.

Part Reviews

CPU Cooler

I replaced the fan for a Cougar PWM Vortex 120mm, orange and with a high air pressure. The orange looks very industrial.

Motherboard

The first time you start the computer a red light for the memory flashes, you have to keep it pressed and it will do the auto memory tuning, then you will not need to do it again. I also had to replace the mobo once, as I removed the CPU to clean it and something fell and bent the pins, I tried to fix them but it did not work (computer did not start, just the red light flashing all the time), so I had to buy a 2nd one. Then that caused an issue in the Windows 10 activation server, so I had to engage microsoft support so they fixed that in their servers.

Memory

Bought them as 2 kits, each of them working in dual mode.

Storage

It works like a charm for everything: it is so quick, Windows 10 starts in around 10 seconds, and the apps and web browser windows launch in a fraction than in an usual computer.

Video Card

The reason I chose to build this in 2016, is because a friend told me that the i5+ Radeon HD-7970 (XFX-Ghost) is still such a good tandem for some miracolous reason, as all games do still play fine with those two. Also note that the Radeon HD-7970 was "la crème de la crème" of video cards back in 2012. Every 6 months I have to go to https://www.amd.com and download new drivers for amd hd 7970. It is noticeable that the mini DP has the higher resolution. Issues found: after installing VideoLAN the non mini DP showed less resolution, that was fixed by a restart. From time to time I get all screens in flat color: 2 black 1 grey, or 2 black 1 blue, that is fixed by a button restart.

Case Fan

It is worth mention that I spent months researching about what fans to use. Finally I purchased Cougar Voltage controlled for the case, because of their focused and high air flow, silence (that hydro bearing system) and how beautiful they are.

Fan Controller

I got the RGB Thermaltake 6 fans controller, note all fans are contralled by voltage, no PWM fan can be controlled. Actually if I put a PWM fan, the fact of changing the Voltage causes it to have like 3 speeds.

Mouse

Good mouse and resilient.

I was checking because it would be weird if these parts were used in 2017. Thanks.

Yup, I got the cougar fans after researching a lot, said that one out of the five has started to make some noise...let's see if I can do something about it...
