Description

Using the machine mainly to play games. Currently still installing the games but looking forward to play! The build has no problem, although being first time building PC I made a lot of mistakes.

So here is the story:

I live in dorm, so I like (or need) smaller cases to be easier to transport around when I need to change room or dorm. Initially, I want this build or even better, FT03-mini as the case. I like FT03 and the mini because they look sleek. After several research and going back and forth to the shop, I realized some stuffs.

  • FT03-mini has two problems. One is small size which means limited GPU and GPU upgrades. The other is if I want to fit the best GPU I can get for it, I need liquid-cooling. Liquid-cooling is a nono for me because this is my first build and I would like it to be as simple as possible

  • FT03 also has some problems. One is that it need blower-style GPU, which is hard to find shops selling it. Also, I could only find one shop that sells Silverstone (I live in Singapore). And it is expensive, SGD279 (around USD223).

Because of the condition above, I decided to change case. I talked to one shopkeeper who is nice and knowledgeable for parts that I want. He suggested to me Micro-ATX as more expansion slots and cheaper. I talked to him about the other parts as well.

Here is the breakdown:

CPU - i5-4690
Not i7 because performance-wise, top i5 is good enough and i7 doesn't give that much improvement from what I heard. Also, price. Getting normal 4690 because overclocked one would be hotter and bad for the casing and cooling system I am looking for.

Motherboard - ASUS H97M-PLUS Micro ATX
I was looking at either ASUS or MSI. The shopkeeper suggested me H97 because Z97 only useful for overclocking which I don't intend to do now or in the near future. Micro-ATX because of the reasons I put above.

Memory - Kingston Fury Black 16GB
I intended to take Corsair Vengeance. But I am taking small case and afraid that its size would be a problem. I am taking 16GB because I like overkill. But other than that, I may be using the PC for game making or 3D stuffs as well, so might as well overkill the RAM in case needed.

HDD - WD Black 1TB
I need big space due to the things I like to do. If getting SSD, I intended to get Samsung 840 256GB but realized it was too expensive, too small space and I don't really need the fast boot. And I wanted to get the WD Black 1TB anyway even with SSD for storage. So I dropped SSD. WD Black because brand preference.

GPU - Zotac GTX970 AMP! Omega
Initially, I wanted GTX760. I am fine with GTX750 if my case could not fit GTX760 (because I wanted FT03-mini initially). But, GTX750 to GTX760 only add $100 (local currency). And GTX760 to GTX770 only add another $100. I was thinking might as well get GTX770. Then, by surprise, I saw that GTX970 price is on same range as GTX770! I thought it would be very expensive since it is new. So I decided to take GTX970. And since I changed my casing preference, I don't need blower style. So I just asked the shopkeeper which he recommends. He said Zotac, because cheap. Then he offered me overclocked version and since the price difference was not that much and he said better energy efficiency, I took it. Caution to those looking at this. It takes 2 expansion slots IO but 3 EXPANSION SLOTS inside!!! (See attached pictures). I didn't realize it until I read the instruction manual and looked at my build again.
GPU temperature was 55 celcius after playing DMC Devil May Cry for 1 hour at max setting. It was 66 celcius after playing ACII for 3 hrs at max setting.

Case - Cooler Master Silencio 352
Intended to get Fractal Design Define Mini, but the shopkeeper said it is too small, better to get Silencio 352. I like sleek cases, and this one looks sleek enough so I took it. The side behind motherboard is quite tight for cables, though. I put just one power cable on that side (I think it is the smaller cables for motherboard, can't remember the name) and the cushion on the case side panel is already pushed in. I am satisfied with the case, though. Especially it has front SD card reader.

Power Supply - Corsair 650W
I asked the shopkeeper whichever could power my machine. It looks good, though. And enough power cables of different types to suit my needs (and even more).

Optical Drive - Samsung
I am not sure the exact type, but anything would do.

Wireless Adapter - TP-Link
Same case as ODD, anything would do.

Here is the part that I didn't buy with the other parts:

OS - Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit
I use a free copy from Dreamspark Student account.

Keyboard and Mouse - Ms Wireless Keyboard Combo 800
I owned it already. I know not suitable for gaming, but I tend to play games that use controller rather than keyboard and mouse.

Monitor - Dell S2340L
I owned it already.

You need more pictures. Also, you don't need 16GB of RAM for gaming. For another $60 you could have added an SSD which would be a massive improvement. I like the CPU and GPU choices!

Well there isn't much of a description but with heavy mods it can be good to have.

Please post more pictures. This build looks quite nice aside of the fact that your details about the build are so vague.

Give cabling another go, I've built in that case and you can definitely route cables behind the motherboard, especially corsairs flat ones. Maybe plug the back Fans into the header near the gpu and the front fan onto the top. take out the cables you dont need and hopefully you'll get much better airflow.

Cool, but what makes that card require a 3 slot cooler.

Ask zotac, bro. They made it.

I don't get all the hate. Solid build. Fast i5 with killer GPU for an awesome price. I wish I could get a 970.

I usually say that pics arent required but i am pretty interested in that GPU. Looks really nice on their website

I'm getting ready to dive in to my first build. Perhaps you could message me with some mistakes to avoid?

I wrote some stuff about those here. Not about picking parts, though, but rather on the assembling of the parts. Good luck!

With this graphics card, would you be able to use 2 way sli? You said it takes 3 expansion slots, so is there enough room for a second inside a mid tower case like the h440? Thanks!

I am not sure how big is the space in H440, you need to look up on that. For my case, though, it won't fit because the second PCI-E can only fit single slot card due to the power supply below it. If you are asking if the second PCI-E is available for connection, yes it is. I use it for my wireless card.

hey just want to know if theres any coil whine from the video card and how loud is it?

Not noticeable when the case is closed. Never try it when the case is opened. After long gaming, only slight noise but I won't say loud enough unless you are playing the game on mute and on a silent environment.
