Description

I game quite a bit. My favorites are Fallout 4, Elder Scrolls, Battlefield 4, and Crysis 3. I edit Youtube videos and spend quite a bit of time designing 3D graphics. I overclocked the CPU to 4.3GHz and I'm running the GPU at +100 on the base clock 1252MHz and +150 on the memory 7160MHz. It boosts to 1503MHz while gaming/rendering and is rock solid. I didn't want to push the system to it's fullest capacity for everyday use. The best I got while testing it's limits was 4.6GHz on the CPU and a Boost clock of 1532MHz on the GPU. My Firestrike score was 17705 with my everyday settings. I'm happy with the Swiftech cooler although I'm considering the Corsair H115i or the EKWB 360 AIO to see if temps will come down even more. My CPU idle temps are around 30C with an ambient room temp of around 22C and it never exceeds 66*C under load so I may just leave well enough alone. I'm not happy with the Plextor M.2 drive as they shipped me a Gen2 and it just isn't as fast as I'd hoped. I have a Samsung 950 Pro M.2 on order, but I'll have to migrate my OP Sys to the new drive. (A pain). I want to add another 980 Ti card and step up to a 1440P or 4K monitor (Predator X34), but I'm waiting to see how the GTX 1080 Ti performs at those resolutions before I do. This system runs 24/7 and has been for two months now with no problems what so ever. I'm building a modded air box to funnel air directly into the GPU as well as a PSU cover to clean up cabling and just give it a cleaner look. I'll update photos when it is finished. Cheers...

extremely great monster build mate! +1 and if i was you i wound't waste my money on another 980ti, ill just get the single 1080 cause you can always add another 1080 in the future which would outperform the sli 980ti anyday

Yeah I agree! Now I want to be the first kid I my block with 1080's in SLI! A guy can dream right!

Incorrect, the 1080 only offers a 30% increase in preformance over a 980ti. While this would make more sense then buying another 980ti these results are cherry picked and therefor are not as accurate to the rest of the average gpus. The way I would go if I were you is to wait until pascal releases. Then decied if you are going to switch for the better preformance, or stay and get another 980ti for cheaper then a 1080.

  • 1 point

Actually the results are not cherrypicked, they are just a regular card, they may be a better overclocking card but most 1080 cards will go over 2ghz

  • 2 points

Yes it is a regular card, but that does not mean it is not cherry picked. They most likely tested multiple catds and choose the best to feature at the release. Looking over what I said I think i should reword it. While this would make more sense then buying another 980ti these results are cherry picked. To word that better, These results are amazing but without a large ammount of cards these results may not be entirely accurate. They could be better, the same, or worse. And yes i do belive almost every card will be able to get over 2.0Ghz. Especially with future cooling options.

I'm not in a hurry, but even 30% over a 980! Damn!

If the swiftech is quiet I would stick with it the H100i GTX is too bloody loud the pump (pretty sure its the same pump in the H115i just bigger rad) anyway I do hear mixed results on it so maybe I just didn't win the pump lottery with mine, even at a slight 4.3 OC on my 6700k idle the thing is bloody loud with temps in the low 30's so it shouldn't be running that hard. If you go with the EKWB AIO I would be very very interested in how it cools and how quiet it is.

  • 1 point

I've heard that too. Thanks for confirming. The Swiftech pump is by no means silent, but it is certainly not obtrusive. The EKWB solution intrigues me. I've not heard much about pump noise but that's because no one can afford the bloody things!? If I go EK it will more than likely be a custom loop.

Ooo, I want to see the wind tunnel for the gpu when it is done!

I'll post pics. It's in fabrication now. I'm making it out of transparent dark green plastic with a black band in the center that houses two Noctua 60mm fans which will take the input air from the front fans and focus it directly onto the GPU!

  • 2 points

Nice! Also, can you do temp differences??

  • 1 point

Yup, I did a cardboard mock up without the Noctua fans exiting the box and it dropped temps a couple of degrees. With the fans, I can't wait to see the difference. Stay tuned!

Hey I posted a couple of pics with the air box and the PSU cover. I also upgraded the lighting to the Hue+ What do you think? The air box dropped my GPU temps by 5-8 degrees C in benchmarks.

  • 1 point

It looks really good! And sweet, those are some really worth while temp differences! And yes, I personally love the Hue+ and want it in my computer. I just upgraded my psu to an unopened 750 watt g2. I would get the hue+, and more fans, however, I want a corsair scimitar, and a 1070/1080 first xD Thanks for remembering to update me

No problem! I bought cheap 60mm fans for the box to see how it performed. They were $5 ea. now I'm getting either MassFlow or Noctua fans for the final version. I'm not crazy about the Noctua brown though? I'm waiting for the 980Ti SLI vs the 1080 benchmarks. If I spend another $600 on a card I want more of a difference! So I may go 980Ti x2!! I just don't know yet? Anyway, good luck and have fun...

  • 1 point

Yeah, I don't like the brown either. Have you checked out the industrial version from noctua?

Well, the 980ti sli would stomp just a single1080. The 1080 benchmarks are out, and it barely beats the 980 in sli (still amazing that a single card beats the 980s in sli for some games). The benefit is also higher min FPS due to a single card vs sli. If you are doing sli vs sli, go 1080. If you are debating on either going 980ti sli, or single 1080, 980ti sli should be fine, since it still is a beast of a card. Heck, once the 1080 drops, the 980ti price should go down a bit! So if you want to sli the beast you have, wait for price drops, or go for a used 980ti (of course if you don't mind a used one). Keep your eyes on the 1070 too, before doing anything. 1070 sli might be amazing.

+1 awesome build brother!

Thanks! It plays 4K. Bearly!! I plugged in my roomates 4K monitor and ran some benchmarks. Most games were in the 30-40FPS range on high to ultra settings. I hope a 1080P will address that soon!!!

how did you mod the front case light on the 780t?

  • 1 point

Yes, stock it's just a red stick led around 6" long. I just used a section of my LED strip to replace the stock red. The fan controller and HDD activity lights are still red though? It will take some solder and a little re-wiring to change those?!!

Too bad that the 1080 was just released... Also, I really hope you didn't spend that much on a 4TB HDD, I spent $100 on a Seagate 4TB on sale from $120 and $174 is way too much.

  • 1 point

I actually got it on sale on Amazon for $129. I know the Seagate drive is less ;( I wanted to try out the Hybrid design. It has an SSD built in for its cache. It is amazingly fast for an HDD. My Diskmark speeds were much faster than my old WD Blue 1TB drive. I knew the Pascal cards were coming when I built this, but honestly I want to wait until the dust settles to see which way to go? In the mean time I have to work! Timing is everything?!?!

  • 2 points

I guess that isn't too bad. But yeah, timing killed my friend, he got 2 Titan X Hybrids but the 980 Ti came out two days later.

Cool looking build, it must perform very well.

Those SickleFlow fans have a much higher airflow than expected, especially for their price.

  • 2 points

Thank you! I like the sickle flows but they are a bit noisy? I may look in the future for a quieter green LED fan to compare. The Corsairs are just as loud! This system is way overkill for 1080P (my current monitor) but like I said I hope to get the Predator X34 when the $ magically appears??

I do love the H440! It's my co-favorite. The Razer edition would fit my theme too!! But, I wanted the larger area inside the 780T plus I like its overall asthetic. I'll post pics when the PSU cover is finished.

How did you change the front LEDs on the front of the case from red to green, and can it be changed from red to blue in the same way?

  • 1 point

There is a video I watched and it helped. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BUYITdNJGQ This only changes the eyebrow led on the front of the case and not the led's on the power/fan buttons on top. Those led's are wired to the board that contains all of your top pannel connectors. To change those you must order individual led's and solder them in place of the existing lights. It is a pain to change those! Mine were red for months until I got brave enough to tear it apart again. Hope this helps?

Yeah, I decided to stick around 4.3GHz on the CPU for everyday work. It runs games at 4.6 with no problem. I saved the profile so it's not hard to switch over if wanted. The G1 980 seems to like the +100 on the base clock and +150 on the memory. I've used higher settings and some benchmarks dipped? I'm still figuring out Boost 2.0? It has a mind of it's own??

[comment deleted]
  • 1 point

Can you explain Boost 2.0 to me? GPU-Z shows this card running ay 1503MHz while gaming at the +100 base clock setting. If I push the base to 1500 the boost would be off the charts? Plus it crashes when I do set it that high. I've added voltage and spent hours fiddling with settings, but decided to settle where it is for everyday use. The Gigabyte OC Guru software lets me save profiles and I have a few hotrod settings I play with now and again. Why push it all the time??
