Description

I've been lurking r/buildapc and messing around on pcpartpicker for a good year now but 3 months ago I decided to stop dreaming and start building my first PC. I got a job and planned on completing the build before winter break started. I wanted this to be a bang for your buck gaming build. Luckily I live 3 minutes away from a Microcenter, which was very helpful as I was able to get most of my components quickly and at a great price. It took me about 2-3 hours to complete, but was an incredibly fun and rewarding experience as I built something cool with the components that I bought with my own money. I really wish I can build a computer everyday. I think I may have developed a problem as I am already looking to improve my PC. Any other suggestions to improve my build would be appreciated :) Happy to finally ascend

Benchmarks

Heaven- http://imgur.com/a/Wcrno I'm not sure if this is a good score or not

Battlefield 1- Average 90 fps on Ultra Settings

Overwatch - Average 140 fps @ Ultra settings and 90 fps Average @ Epic settings

Firestrike - http://imgur.com/UzYx2wl

Time Spy - http://imgur.com/NaWfudE

Parts

CPU | i5 6600k - Saw that this was the lowest price it has reached so I had to jump at the deal at Microcenter. For $180, it was as much as a 6500 on some sites. I also chose this for the overclocking capabilities and figured it'd be the perfect processor for 1080p gaming. So far, I have it OC'ed to 4.4ghz at 1.27v.

CPU Cooler | Cryorig H7 - This is a really solid CPU cooler. It looks great, being black and white and performs extremely well, keeping my temps at 30 Celsius idle and 60 Celsius under load. This cooler also runs quietly and provides enough clearance to fit my ram sticks. I recommend installing this on the motherboard before placing it into the case.

Motherboard | ASRock Z170 Pro4 - Microcenter had a deal going on where you can get $30 off a motherboard if you buy a CPU as well, which was how I got this z170 board at such a low price. It's got all the features that I needed and was at a great price. I originally wanted a black and white theme to my build but at the time of buying the CPU+mobo, I only had enough money for this one so I guess my PC is sorta carbon themed? BIOS was easy to navigate and there are really no downsides to this board other than it's orange color lol

Memory | Team Vulcan 8gb DDR4-2400 - The part list says 16gb but I decided to split this with my cousin who was also building a pc and we figured that 8gb was enough for 1080p and so we saved money by splitting a 2x8 16GB kit. No complaints about the RAM, it looks great, but I should've just gone with 2x8 as 1 stick isn't as aesthetically pleasing

Storage | Micron M600 128gb m.2 | PNY 240gb SSD - I decided not to get a 1TB HDD because I don't think I will use up all that space and I really enjoy the speeds of SSD's. If I need more space down the road, I will buy a larger SSD. I have the m.2 as the boot drive and the PNY SSD as a place to store everything. It's my first time dealing with SSD's and it never fails to amaze me how fast it can boot things.

Video Card | Sapphire Radeon RX 480 Nitro+ - I wanted an 8gb card at first but after doing research, I figured the performance difference was not worth the extra $40 so I settled on the 4gb variant. The card runs beautifully and I have no major complaints. At original settings, it's OC'ed to 1306 mhz out of the box but I decided to OC it further to 1380mhz. The card runs sorta hot and loud but has not reached more than 80 Celsius yet and the noise level isn't bad at all if I have headphones on. I may get a 2nd one of these in the future for a crossfire build.

Case | NZXT S340 - Beautiful case with great features. Only downside is that the top exhaust can only fit a 120-140mm fan and would not be able to accommodate a larger radiator, not sure why NZXT did this when other cases in the price range seem to offer that feature.

PSU | EVGA SuperNova NEX 750W - Was on sale on newegg for $60 so I jumped at it. Chose 750W in case I wanted to do a crossfire setup in the future, the PSU also had decent ratings which factored into why I bought it. Looking back, I would've gone with a modular PSU but semi modular isn't too bad. Also wished the cables were all black, really hate the multiple colors of the 24 pin connector.

Monitor | BenQ XL2411Z 1080p 144hz When I was gaming on my laptop, it's resolution was 720p and 60hz, jumping to this monitor, felt like heaven. Everything was so much more smooth and the picture quality is crazy good. I love 144hz for fps games such as Overwatch, CSGO and Battlefield 1. After switching to 144hz, my accuracy with Ana in OW went from ~45% to ~70%. I found this monitor on craigslist and had to jump at the deal, the guy even gave me $10 off because of a tiny scratch on the bezel. I could have gone for a monitor with the same specs and freesync but this was $20 cheaper than any online listing.

Keyboard | MechanicalEagle Z-77 - I didn't really want to spend $100 for a mechnical keyboard so I went with this cheap Chinese one on Amazon. The pictures on Amazon doesn't do much justice as the keyboard looks fantastic in real life. Blue switches are super satisfying, has annoyed my parents but I don't really care, may get o-rings though to make it quieter.

WiFi Adapter | TL-WDN4800 Very happy with the speeds on this adapter. I bought the TP-Link TL-WN881ND before but it was complete ****. This is a much better adapter.

Part Reviews

CPU

Great CPU, was able to delid and overclock to 4.5ghz. Great for gaming and video/picture editing so far

CPU Cooler

Looks nice, keeps CPU cool, and stays relatively quiet. Does a good job cooling my 6600k OC'ed to 4.5ghz

Motherboard

Works well, could use another fan header but it's not the biggest deal. The colors are ugly.

Storage

No problems so far, everything loads quickly

Video Card

Great card for the price, ran games perfectly, and the card looks great. Was able to sell to miners for $350

Case

Sexy case, has everything you could want all for a great price. Really wish I could fit a radiator on top but there is only space for 1 fan

Power Supply

ugly colored cables, other than that, it works fine

Wireless Network Adapter

Love this thing, great connection all the time

Monitor

144hz is heaven. Can be mounted on a monitor arm as well, perfect monitor.

Thanks man!

Aiden_rabe 1 point 21 months ago

Lol love the description of the keyboard. Solid build! Do you recommend going to a micro center first to buy parts?

johnguyen submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

You should 100% buy your motherboard and CPU there because you get $30 off motherboards. The great thing about having a Microcenter nearby is that you can get your parts instantly, rather than wait for shipping. You can also price match very easily there

ok thank you so much

Really liked your rig. I might get some stuff from your gaming pc and implent them on my custom rig. It might be a litle cheaper since i can't wait to save any more money. I NEED IT! Plus it's really frustrating trying to code or game from a duo core 2.83 ghz pc which it's video card is not even 1gb. It's ram is 4gb i upgraded it to 6gb and then 8gb but still it is crap and srsly adding memory made it slower not faster..

johnguyen submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

Try your hardest to save as much as you can, it'll be worth it. I was dumb and didn't realize that if I waited for another paycheck I could have gotten a 1070, but at the same time, I really wanted to have a pc at the start of winter break

StavrosModz 1 point 21 months ago

alright! thanks for the info! i will try my best to get enough money for the custom build i want to create! Thanks again!

Nice build, how is the monitor holding up?

johnguyen submitter 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

It's my first ever 144hz monitor and I love it! People online say that the colors are bad or whatever but I don't really notice anything bad. I may look up some settings but so far, it's been amazing

kamikaze1423 1 point 21 months ago

Thanks for the info! I've been looking at getting the same model instead of the popular asus vg248qe
