Description

I appreciate all the compliments I've been getting! You guys are the best! :D

This is a re-post, but I've made some changes to my rig, and I want some good ol' constructive criticism from the PCPartpicker community. So please leave a comment telling what you think and/or what you would've done differently. :)

Notes: The fans on the H80i spin at 100% for a few seconds after starting my PC, but then go down to 1200 RPM and I can't hear them at all. I have the RAM underclocked to around 1866MHz CL9 right now, but will push them to their max when I upgrade my CPU. I'm using the Momentus XT as a Steam/Games drive, and it does not give me any sort of performance whatsoever, so I don't recommend it for that purpose. The video card is awesome, I got a lucky one that has 8+6 pin power, so I've OC'd it to 1175MHz on core and 1500MHz memory, but brought it back slightly because of heat issues.

Also, sorry for the flash in the pics. The lighting in my room is terribad, and the flash on my phone is OP.

Edit: (May 10, 2013) - Just swapped out the PSU for a Corsair AX860. Will upload pics soon.

EDIT: (November 11, 2013) - Kept the RAM, Storage, PSU, and keyboard. Sold everything else. Built new PC (See here)

Awesome build, I really wanted to use that motherboard on my own build, very nice :)

I love it! The thing that really sold me was the onboard audio. It's amazing for what I use it for (I don't do any music production, so I don't need a $200 sound card). Definitely worth the extra $20 over the CVF. :)

Nice overclock.

Thanks. I had it at 4.06GHz, but then I bluescreened 12 minutes into a Prime95 test. :(

I was talking more about the gpu, but still phenom six core. Not bad. Indeed.

Oh, oops. Thanks again though. :)

late reply, but I think you should try overclocking with the multiplier instead of the FSB. It's easier to achieve stability that way. Just bring the FSB down to 200 and change the cpu multiplier to 20 for 4 Ghz.

  • 1 point

If I bring the FSB back down, then my RAM speed decreases too. It defaults to 1600 Mhz. Right now it's running at around 1870 Mhz with timings of 8-10-8-27.

The ram has a multiplier of it's own. You could use that to overclock your ram rather than the FSB.

It's fine the way it is. Why would I go messing about with it?

That Trident RAM is one gorgeous kit. I keep trying to justify it for my next build. I'll probably go with the 1866 or 2133. Good looking build.

Thanks!

The only way I could justify spending that much on RAM is by selling my older 16GB for $100. So I really didn't spend too much. :p

That's some real nice cable management you got there. You probaly could have saved money on the full tower, and upgraded the gpu to a 7970 though.

I should've probably stated in the description the prices I paid for all my parts, and when I bought them, but anyways, I bought the case on Boxing Day at a store that was going out of business, so I think I paid $140 AFTER tax. :)

Also, regarding the video card, I got it on sale for $280.

Where did you get such a chair?

  • 1 point

Found it in my grandmother's basement when I moved there, so I hauled it up the stairs. It's a bit too low, but I have back problems, and it's really comfy. :p

I have some good ol' constructive criticism for you -- god damn xBlood_Monkey, I love you, you are freaking awesome, lol! That setup you got going is sweet... I have so much to ask you haha. There should really be top rated builds here but also something like top rated "Complete Setups" or something to rate and show off people's complete desk/workstation setups. I think a lot of other people enjoy seeing cool setups.

First, I guess I'll start off with my review. This build is super nice, super clean, and has perfect cable management -- really nice job with it. Wow, that case is monstrous! That 6 core AMD sounds nice but if you are looking to upgrade I would go with an i7-3770K 4 core w/ HT, or the i5-3570K to save $100. An Intel 6 core is over $500 if you really need it for a purpose. I currently like the Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD's best right now, so I would have recommended the Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB SSD for a very close price to what you paid. The case is really nice but I think it's too much and unneeded for that price. I would have recommended any number of really nice mid tower cases for at least an $80 savings. I really like only a select few PSU names and my recommended choice would be either a SeaSonic or Corsair -- and you're going to be changing to a Corsair soon which is great.

Finally, to my questions, heh. I can't really make it out from the pic, but what exact mouse mad is that? That long pad is sweet. It looks like you're playing a FPS game, so I got to know what monitor that is and how you like it for FPS games? To the two big questions. One, that desk is exactly what I'm looking for, I like my keyboard and mouse on a long bottom tray and my monitor above on the top of the desk, can you tell me what brand/model that desk is if you know? I hope I could find it, it's so perfect. Two, that's the greatest computer chair I've seen, lol, that's so great, can you tell me what chair that is too? Thanks man, you got as awesome as hell setup there.

Actually says in the picture that it's a Razer Goliathus. Since it's so long I'd assume it's the Goliathus R. They're about $30.

Thanks for the compliments on my set-up, but it's really nothing special. Just a cheap 24" TV as a monitor, ****** speakers, and a rickety desk. When I replace those 3 things this summer, I'll re-re-post to show it off. :p

Now on to business, I just bought that motherboard in October, so I'm not switching to Intel any time soon unless someone offers me a lump sum for CPU+mobo. I got the SSD as a Christmas gift in December 2011. The case I got at a clearance sale on Boxing Day 2010, so I think I paid $140 after tax.

As for your questions, the mouse pad is a Razer Goliathus, as pointed out by saw1833. My monitor is just a cheap 24" 1080p TV that I traded to a friend for my 32" 720p TV. I hate it. The colours are way off, there is noticeable input lag, but whatever. It'll do until I (hopefully) upgrade in the coming months. I have no idea what the desk and chair are; I just found them in my grandmother's basement when I moved in.

Again, thank you. :)

Gonna get a Centurion? ;)

  • 1 point

I was thinking about it, but the Centurion just sounds like a cherry-picked FX-8350, much like the AMD Phenom II Black Edition TWKR's were cherry-picked Phenom II X4's.

For $800 I'm hoping it's a real 8-core, not just a 5 GHz 8350. Only an idiot would buy an overclocked 8350 for that price.

From what I've read, it's an "FX type" CPU that runs at 5GHz out of the box on the stock cooler.

So much for it being competition for the i7 extreme processors.

Thanks! I bought this CPU right when they launched and it's held up so far. I was tempted to upgrade to Bulldozer and then again to Piledriver, but I'm glad that I didn't. I've had zero problems with it and it handles everything I throw at it.

Hiya mate, I'm currently in the process of pricing up parts to build a very similar rig to yours. Could you tell me if 4 memory stick would fit with that Corsair H80i. I'm thinking of going for the H100i, but I'm worried about clearance issues if I run all 4 slots with memory in them. Cheers Bri

  • 1 point

Hi,

I used to have 4 DIMM's in my rig, but the tubes coming from the H80i were pressing up against the closest RAM stick, so that's when I decided to upgrade my RAM. So 4 sticks do fit, but I just wasn't comfortable with it.

Cheers for the reply buddy :) I'm only planning on running a couple of sticks to start off with, but in the future I didn't want to find out that I couldn't add more, because of clearance issues. Great build and loving the photo's :D

I have a question about the CPU. The list for the chips do not have this chip listed so how did you get it in your build. My second build used one of those and would like to show that build also.

             Thanks

i want to put the G.Skill Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2666 in my build and it says there is a 1.5v limit IDK what to do.(your RAM runs at same voltage so thats why im asking)

  • 1 point

I have mine underclocked at the moment so that it runs at 1866MHz CL9. So mine only needs 1.5V.

how did you get to list the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black 3.2GHz 6-Core? I have another build with that CPU and need to know how list it.

Why are you smelling my pictures..?

Anyways, I got it for free from a friend, used it to play GTA V for about a month, and then sold it almost a year ago.
