Description

This build is the culmination of a lot of time, poor planning, and excessive costs.

Initially, it started life out running a simple EK-XLC Predator 280 with a pre-filled GPU block expansion. Life was good, I was happy. But.. then I got build-envy, so I decided to spruce things up just a little bit. At first I planned to expand on my Predator setup by purchasing an EK-CoolStream PE 360 radiator, a couple of QDCs and meter of EK-Tube ZMT to build a pre-filled radiator expansion. Easy enough, right? I did all the research I could, and found that the Air 540 will easily accommodate a 360mm radiator in the front. Perfect! I order the parts.

Well, delivery day comes and I rip everything open to test fit the radiator, and... it doesn't fit? Wait, what? It has to fit. The Internet told me so! Oh, wait.. what's it? Oh yea.. the lightbox. Woops. So, there's no way I'm giving up the lightbox, so I guess I'll just opt for a small radiator. To play it safe, I order an EK-CoolStream PE 240. That'll definitely fit.

Fast forward to delivery date. Rip package open, test fit and.. oh, hey. Look at that. The Predator 280 is just sliiiiightly too long and encroaches on the placement of the new 240mm radiator. Fantastic. Time for beer. Not one to let that get me down (and after enough beer), I figure it's time to double down on crazy. Not measuring got me into this mess, and I'll be damned if I'm going to start measuring now. So, let's make a impulsive decision and just order a separate radiator and pump and go for the gusto. So, order placed for an EK-CoolStream CE 280 and EK-XRES 100 DDC MX 3.2.

(I'd like to say I decided to minimize my losses here and opt for the financially responsible option of standard shipping, but well.. NEXT DAY EVERYTHING DAMNIT.)

Sooo.. next day, everything arrives and FINALLY everything fits. (YES! I can put this beast together and go get my *** handed to me in Overwatch this weekend!)

A few hours (and beers) later, everything is setup and running wonderfully. Temps are great, my KDR ratio is tanking as expected. Life is good. Except.. what's that buzzing? That.. incessant hum. Is it the fans? No, those are fine. It's coming from.. the pump? It's not a loud buzzing, just a gentle fluctuating hum. Just... enough... to drive me crazy. I adjust the speed via PWM, the pitch changes but it's still there. It's just the resonance of the pump on the case. I guess I'm just going to have to live with it... right? (You haven't been paying attention, have you?) TIME TO ORDER A NEW PUMP! Order placed for an EK-XRES 100 Revo D5. This time I, responsibly opted for ground shipping (hah, no I didn't). TIME TO DRAIN THE LOOP!

Next day, new D5 pump arrives and I run it through a quick pre-cleaning process, throw on some tubing and QDCs (hey, I don't want to have to drain it again.. you never know) and start the filling/bleeding process all over again.

And, well.. that's where the story ends. The new pump alleviated the buzzing, my flow is up, temps are down, and frame rates are at max. Now, I can mourn Roadhog in style. #RIPHOG

PS: I have a closet full of unused water-cooling parts. Any ideas what I should do with them? Water cool the toaster maybe?

Hot damn and a 5.2Ghz OC.

Thumbs up.

Battlefield 3 points 13 months ago

Where's the pump?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 5 points 13 months ago

Good question! The pump and PSU are in the back, behind the motherboard. I've uploaded some pics of the "forgotten realm" where I hide things. :P

Battlefield 1 point 13 months ago

I assumed as much.....it was a question in hopes you would share the rear pics...cuz those are the money shots. Also, nice pics...came across them when browsing Imgur.

Also, the black tubing looks sleak. I never thought about going black but I might try it for my updated cooling solution. Would you do it again or go hard tubing?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Oh, I have nothing but good things to say about the ZMT. I'd definitely use it again.

Battlefield 1 point 13 months ago

Nice to see this got Featured.

CleverJimmy 2 Builds 3 points 13 months ago

Where did you get that keyboard? I can't find it anywhere

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Got one in Amazon during one of brief moments it was in stock. Replaced my K65 LUX and I couldn't be happier!

CleverJimmy 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Lucky! It looks so good. I've got a K70 Lux RGB and would love to replace it with that one but can't find one

brad_leibel 1 point 13 months ago

If you're in Canada try Staples. I have one also with MX Reds and that's where I got mine from. Not sure if US Staples has them also.

Jesso2k 8 Builds 3 points 13 months ago

I love this. I've had water cooling on my mind for a while but couldn't find the tubing I wanted. This is the tubing I've been looking for, not too intimidating for a first loop but still looks great. I may have to bookmark this page for the next time I do upgrades.

GamingHardware 3 points 13 months ago

What is the white light thing on the bottom left, in front of your case?

dixonerfais 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

What is that backlit ROG logo on the bottom? I need one...for science...

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

It's a custom RGB lightbox for the Air 540 from ColdZero. I also commissioned them for a custom ROG cover. :P

dixonerfais 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Ah, thanks! Nice build btw

dylanxharrison 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

How did you commission them?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 3 points 13 months ago

Just sent them an email with my request and went from there.

treyb_ 1 point 12 months ago

Does the cover for your lightbox sit on top of the lightbox where you could remove just the cover at anytime or is it connected to the lightbox? Great build by the way! I am looking for a case for my first build and I really like this case and what you have done with it.

[comment deleted]
magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

They sure do. If your case isn't listed there, they could probably custom build one, too.

JohannesMP 2 points 13 months ago

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Best Buy Black Friday sale!

Anyansayo 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I have one and it is the best mouse that I have ever had. I bought it off of amazon for about $100.

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

I wholly agree, hands down. I was skeptical at first, but after using it -- I'd gladly pay MSRP twice over. There's simply no comparing.

I sound lik a hater, i realize dat, yo.

but why did ya pick the 7700k over like a 1700 or 1700x?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

I pre-ordered a 7700k before Ryzen was ever released, actually. Aside from that, though, the 7700k still beats out Ryzen for gaming at the moment.

SubNauticaWaterWorld47 2 points 13 months ago

7700k still beats out Ryzen for gaming at the moment

That isn't going to change either.

jenxoff 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Yea, but don't tell me all ya do is gaming. Let's be real here.

SubNauticaWaterWorld47 2 points 13 months ago

I watch youtube and browse the web. But other than that I only game. I have no use for more than 4 cores.

jenxoff 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Ok, but a lot of ppl do more stuff...

This rig? Yea, it's exclusively a gaming machine. I have another rig with a 6600k/GTX1080 in the living room strictly for Oculus/VR. For everything else (work/web/coding) I use my MacBook Pro.

Blacksm1le 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

SnazzyMadazzy 2 points 13 months ago

Isn't a toaster supposed to be hot? Why watercool it. Seriously this a great build, love the black piping

Anyansayo 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Congratulations on the feature. When I saw this yesterday I was actually thinking that this build deserves a feature and wondered why it wasn't. But now it is here for a bunch of PCPP users to see.

Obamas.mama 3 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

toucanf16 1 Build 2 points 5 months ago

Did you connect the Katana via optical, usb or 3.5mm? I understand software is probably needed for the RGB lighting, but is it plug-n-play for the sound or is a bunch of bloatware required?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 2 points 5 months ago

The Katana is connected to my PC via USB and my MacBook via TOSLINK/optical. For audio, yes, it's plug and play. In order to manage the profiles/RGB, you need the Sound Blaster Connect application (which, as far as third-party software goes, isn't that bad).

You can configure the profiles, load them to the Katana, then disable the Sound Blaster Connect app (that's what I do).

toucanf16 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

Thanks, My ASUS Z370i MB has an optical S/PDIF output, I assume I can use that instead of USB? I live in Hong Kong and my Katana from Amazon should be here in a couple days. Tough choice between the Katana and Logitech's G560 lightsync gaming speaker. I decided to go with the Katana to simplify desk clutter. I only hope the Katana will fit beneath my 34" DELL Alienware curved AW3418DW monitor.

Experience 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I like how you havent used the see-through ones like everyone else always uses, but i think this would've been cool if the pipes were like a UV-Purple :O +1

bladd12001 4 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Anyansayo 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I have never seen non-transparent tubing on a custom loop before. It looks really good actually.

Anyansayo 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

What is that ROG logo at the bottom of the case?

Hivon 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I have always hated on soft tubed builds but man.. This is beauty.

RodrigoContreras20 1 point 13 months ago

How did you put the original backplate of the Strix the graphics card? On the ekwb page says it is not compatible

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Despite what EKWB says, the original backplate fits with selective screw placement. I wrote about it here.

jj0322 1 point 13 months ago

+1 for description, build looks good too...

HarlaquinFa11 1 point 13 months ago

Behemoth!

Wolklung 1 point 13 months ago

Shnerf 1 point 13 months ago

What is the ROG plate at the bottom of the case? Is that OEM or custom built? Also, it looks like its RGB, I'm sorry if you have it written somewhere!

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

It's a custom RGB lightbox for the Air 540 from ColdZero. I also commissioned them for a custom ROG cover. :P

MonsieuRoberts 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

SO ******* CLEAN! +1!

Gargie396 1 point 13 months ago

Black tubing is underrated.

CRFox 1 point 13 months ago

Is the front rad fanless? And if want to do anything remotely close to that looks like im gonna have to get rid of this r9 390 strix edition cuz even in a case like the 540 it takes up too much space

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

No, there are 2 EK-Vardar 120's up front.

deltaseeker 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

This is the absolute cleanest soft tubing loop I have EVER seen. Great Job!

That Matte tubing tho... so nice

DontLookAtMyName 1 point 13 months ago

Where did u get that reaper statue in pic 29 from? Was it collectors edition? Gotta say, no one has ever made black tubing so sexy.

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Thanks! The Reaper statue came from the Blizzard store. I also pre-ordered the Widowmaker one, which will hopefully be shipping soon. :)

colsking 1 point 13 months ago

Gorgeous. I love the stealth. Excellent work!

Bodom0511 5 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

+1 for Behemoth poster

Rhizomorphic 1 point 13 months ago

Did you buy that anti-sag bracket or is that custom made?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Bought from Mnpctech. It's milled CNC aluminum, and by far the best bracket I've used (I've tried about 3 or 4).

Rhizomorphic 1 point 13 months ago

Okay awesome, thanks for the reply. Sick build man!

RetnuhTnelisV 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

This is simply beautiful. I am so upset tho! I have literally the same name for my PC in the air540 and it doesn't touch this. I was happy until now thanks! Just messing with you this is one heck of a rig.

Can you let me know where or how you made that bottom cover for the case. I MUST HAVE WHITE ONE!!!

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

It's a RGB lightbox, custom made for the Air 540 by ColdZero. The top is usually translucent acrylic, which has a white appearance when off. Mine looks a bit different, since I commissioned a custom top with ROG logo.

If you're not looking for RGB/LED, they do make custom midplates, too. I'm sure if you requested a white one, they would have no problem accommodating.

RetnuhTnelisV 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Ah shoot I'm in the US. I have to see if there are any companies that do that here. Thank you and amazing build brother.

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

I'm in the U.S., too. They ship internationally, and believe it or not the cost is quite reasonable. Much less than I thought it would be.

RetnuhTnelisV 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

No way!! Sweet man thank you! May I ask how you got yours? You just asked them?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Well, for the lightbox itself -- nothing special is needed. It's all handled through their store, so just add it to your cart and checkout.

If you want a custom top cover made for it, then yes, you would need to use the Contact Us form and let Ricardo know what you're looking for. If it's something he can do, he will put together a mock up for you, and once you approve it, it will be placed on the store under Custom Orders for you to order. That's it.

Oh, and don't worry. Ricardo types/reads English just fine -- I never ran into any language barriers. He's a great guy.

brad_leibel 1 point 13 months ago

Ninjadudewhat 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

I'm not even a fan of the air 540 but damn that's beautiful

Flip_45 1 point 13 months ago

Finally, a high-spec build that uses plain black flexible tube (and well matched to the fittings). This is something very close to what I've been thinking as the ideal loop: 1) Flexible tubing to remove unnecessary bends and thus loop pressure points/resistance; (2) black ZMT tubing as it has very high resistance and of course should not discolour - i.e. loop efficiency and lower maintenance rather than looks.

That said, it also looks darn good!

Mindersteve 1 point 13 months ago

Sweet Dawg

Sheriff37 1 point 13 months ago

+1 for everything overwatch, that Reaper statue is killer! +1 for the awesome soft-tubing set-up. +1 for the cleanness of those cables (like wow, management is amazing). +1 for the awesome stand for your mouse (do they make one for the G502?). +1 for the awesome build. -4 because, no matter how hard I smash that upvote button, I can only upvote once. Killer build!

slaplante 1 point 13 months ago

What is the name of the mount you are using for both of your monitors? Is it drilled into the desk or clamped? Would you recommend it?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

It's the Loctek D5DH, and I have it clamped onto my desk. I can't say enough great things about the mount, it's rock solid, and it stays exactly where you set it -- absolutely no drifting.

slaplante 1 point 13 months ago

Thank you for the insight!

Dennycrumbubble 1 point 13 months ago

I'd be paranoid about the res mounted over the PSU like that, but nice build.

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Honestly, I'd rather short my PSU than my GPU or Motherboard.. :P

cobracurry 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

magn2o, do you have any better pictures of the front rad setup, where are the fans on that rad? I only ask cause im thinking of purchasing this case and i have a 1080ti Poseidon which is a long card and im curious of its comparability

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 2 points 13 months ago

Sure, the fans are simply mounted in the front of the case under the front shroud. Here's a pic.

cobracurry 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Thank you sir. Beauty build. Ended up buying an Air 740, your build is an inspiration.

cobracurry 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

Never mind i realize there is enough space between the front fascia and the case to mount the fans and just have the radiator inside. Thanks.

jeysoncc 1 point 13 months ago

******* incredible!

Harvey_TM 1 point 13 months ago

That's a sweet build and setup. I love the colors, very nice :)

badjazy 1 point 13 months ago

How often do you use the g-sync? And does it make a huge difference to you when playing games?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Well, at the moment I'm only really playing Overwatch, so Gsync doesn't really help since I can maintain high enough framerates. However, when I get crazy and max out something more demanding running 1440@144, then yea, Gsync steps up and makes a big difference.

MannyPCs 1 point 13 months ago

Damm, that is a crazy CPU overclock, nice job with that.

Can you provide a link to the fittings you used? cant find it listed in the part list. I've love to replicate this but in a Phanteks P400

Harobi 1 point 13 months ago

Amazing attention to detail, great work!

jake33162 1 point 13 months ago

Out of curiosity when picking your components did you set the filter to high to low and pick top choice?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

It seems that way, right? LOL. The 3 most deciding factors for me when picking components were: manufacturer, performance (where applicable), and aesthetic. :P

Luk3. 1 point 13 months ago

how did you get that lightbox in us? i can only find it in eu

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

The company who makes it, Coldzero, is based out of Portugal, but they ship to the US.

johnny8557 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

can you cut the lightbox some?i gotta a 360 in the front rad and I'm not going without it.lol.if not,i can just build one from acrylic, figured id check to see and save me some time and just cut it to fit around the side and bottom fittings, ive make a bottom plate b4 but totally cut the whole bottom panel out of the 540 case, dont wanna really do all the modding and I can still use my ssds and hot swap em out when needed still if the box is able to be modded a little bit, great build btw!!!:) 1+ from me on this one,and if ya have lot of rads and blocks left id buy them from you for close to retail!!either way, lemme know about the light box thou,i do like the idea and would save me a good bit of time!!

Insomniax 1 point 13 months ago

I'm looking to build myself a pic wih custom water cooling and was wondering how you know what you need for it. I probably will wait until I'm a bit more confident to do the hard tubing and I'll stick with your idea. Great looking build btw

Luk3. 1 point 13 months ago

And, another question, do you think custom cooling is worth it?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Depends what you're looking for and what your requirements are. If you're looking at it from a purely performance aspect -- then probably not. You can just as easily get an AIO or high-end air cooler and accomplish that. But if you're aiming for low-noise, or for a purely aesthetic appeal -- then most definitely. :)

Mnpctech MNPCTECH 4 Builds 1 point 13 months ago

Super Clean, and honored to see how the GPU support fit your theme perfectly,

robcov33 1 point 12 months ago

Sweet build! where did you get the RGB lightbox? I found the Coldzero site in Europe and really interested in one for my 540. Did you make the ROG plate? I have the same ROG theme for my build and want to go the same route.

7maniAlkhalaf 1 point 11 months ago

I was just looking through builds to excite myself for my build, really close to yours. And I just fell in love! Being an ROG B***h myself I totally loved yours! Excellent work on it, and coming from my last water cooled build which I ditched to start new ( had a Maximus v extreme, 2600k, two 980s) all water cooled and had a leak that killed an old 980. Now I cannot wait! Might do my mistakes again and go water cooling again lol.

What is that ROG panel in the bottom btw ? Is it a custom cut with lightnings under it ?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 10 months ago

Thanks!

It's a RGB lightbox, custom made for the Air 540 by ColdZero. The top is usually translucent acrylic, which has a white appearance when off. Mine looks a bit different, since I commissioned a custom top with ROG logo.

morandofreddy 1 point 11 months ago

Does Hue+ for the fans play nice with Asus Aura Sync?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 10 months ago

Well, they play nice in that they coexist together just fine. Aura does not control the NZXT fans, though.

GabeTheGamer55 1 point 11 months ago

Are there any conflicts with cam and aura?

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 10 months ago

Nope, none that I can tell.

afrat 1 point 11 months ago

Commenting so I can come back and reference this for my own build, absolutely beautiful work!

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 10 months ago

Thanks! :)

IPesty 1 point 10 months ago

Not only is this the most visually appealing build I've ever seen, but the description makes it that much better. I'm bookmarking and sharing this to everyone.

richonnem1 1 point 10 months ago

what's your monitor stand? and this build is clean man.

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Thanks! I'm using a Loctek D5DH.

Weird choice on the Air 540, looks good though

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 7 months ago

You think so? I've always been a fan of the 'cube' look, more of a less-traditional PC case. Plus, the fact that all of the "ugly stuff" (e.g. PSU, cabling, etc) can be hidden in the back was a huge plus for me.

michaelk9090 1 point 7 months ago

Yeah, i am mainly visually focused and i always just find a way to make things work. But the cube cases look pretty good, and are easier to work in, so, you got me there. Great build, i love seeing builds that use tubes that arent all flashy, with subtle colors instead of "extreme rgb everything" looks great dude.

this is kinda late, but hows that VRM doing on that motherboard

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 7 months ago

Perfectly fine, I haven't had any issues whatsoever.

Camranatic101 2 Builds 1 point 7 months ago

I'm asking, since you OCd your 7700k to 5.2GHZ which is the max, I would say for a perfectly binned and delided chip, and even then it's going to take a lot of cooling (it's on water) and voltage, which would tax power delivery on the motherboard right? Do you know what your motherboard VRM temps are under load - just curious.

HOLY MAN! +9999999 That is the Cleanest build I have ever seen! I see you have a Mic, do you have a YouTube Channel or Just for Games/Calls

Bravo! Amazing build. Within the next month or so I am planning on making my first gaming rig. Yours inspire me. I was thinking on something along the lines of black with gold and maybe some other color but I am not sure. Might hit you up for assistace.

SlackPackSam 0 points 10 months ago

You should water-cool your new Razer Toaster.

What are those rings on the fans? Are they the actual fans themselves or like a case? Amazing PC btw 5.2 OC is nuts man!

magn2o submitter 2 Builds 1 point 7 months ago

They're part of the fans, the NZXT Aer RGB.

Whats that thing under your monitor? The thing that gives off the glow.

Finally! Someone puts 2 and 2 together. :D

Inspiration wise, it comes from one of my favorite Behemoth songs, "The Nephilim Rising". That, coupled with the story of the Nephilim, I couldn't pass up on the irony. :)
