Silent small form factor work PC

by znd125

Wanted to build a silent PC that also has a small footprint. The way I achieve silence is an oversized CPU cooler, no case fan, and semi-passive PSU (and video card if needed discrete graphics).

Not many mini-ITX cases can house a Noctua NH-D15/D15S. Lian Li PC-Q33 and Fractal Design Core 500 are two of them. Q33 is much better looking IMO but if you needed higher end graphics you'd have to go with the Core 500 for compatibility. At the time of my purchase the Q33 was nowhere to find so I ended up with the Core 500. Later I picked up a Q33 as well.

The NH-D15S fits perfectly as you can see in the photos.

I have had 3 Fractal Design (Define S, Core 500, Node 202) cases by now and none of them are perfect. I always love the layout and aesthetics. But manufacturing quality of FD always disappoints me as all 3 FD cases had alignment issues. On this Core 500, the top fan/radiator bracket is not aligned properly with the rest of the frame. I have to squeeze the frame diagonally to make it fit. The design of PCI slots is also flawed due to insufficient opening. If you have a video card that has a legacy video output e.g. DVI/VGA near the top/shoulder, it can be very card to insert the video card.

SSD and memory are both chosen from Gigabyte QVL for maximum compatibility.

Silent Work PC. Probably doesn't need anything more than integrated for display output.

I just looked into it the CPU has its own graphics not as good as he could get in a video card but it'll push some games just not intense

And for everything else I do with it. Quite happy.

Excuse the pun, but that's pretty cool. How are CPU temps?

znd125 submitter 4 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

Depends on usage scenario obviously. Most of time between 45 and 75. Tjunction 100C so I no worry.

GamingKunuck 2 points 15 months ago

Me personally at those temps I'd put a fan and cap it at like 500-600 RPM's

Looks like you are using Seagate Firecuda SSHD (not mentioned in a part list). In case it's still there - what can you say about the noise it produces?

It seems quieter than other HDDs (2.5s and 3.5s) I have used in the past.

thanks! I was searching for the pictures of CPU cooler clearance on the side of HDD mounting side if I would fit a 1tb HDD I think it will fit got some 3tb that for sure based on those pictures it won't fit

Glad you found something useful!

Love your build and thank you for the photos. You've really helped me plan out cable management in my Core 500 build.
