Description

Hey Guys,

So the time had come for me to get a new PC, I was coming from a Alienware X51 R1 with a 2600 and a 660ti which was on its last legs. I wanted something that would last the test of time and give me at least 5 years of solid gaming performance with minimal upgrades needed.
Once the decision was made I immediately started researching, I was originally going to get a Z-170 system with a 6700k but I was pushed in the direction of an X-99 by a mate of mine and never looked back. I went with the 6850k over the 6800k for the extra pcie lanes which should give performance gains and extra upgrade-ability. It took me about 3 weeks of pretty hardcore researching to arrive at a build that I was 100% happy with, with an absolute fuckton of help from this website. That's the main reason I'm writing this report on my build, planning to spend 3-5k on a computer is a pretty daunting task at times, making sure everything is perfect and compatible can be quite stressful given the amount of options for a PC enthusiast these days so I'd like to give something back and hopefully make other peoples' builds a bit easier. I'm going to list the major parts of this build and write my reasoning behind purchase and also my thoughts.

CASE: INWIN 909 FULL TOWER

As soon as I first saw this case I stopped looking at others, It really is a beautiful looking case and I like the tinted glass. I was first put off by reports that the cooling of this case is sub-par although I still decided to go with it and just throw as many fans as I could into it to try to improve airflow. Turns out is not as bad as some reviews said it was, my CPU runs at 30C stock and 40C Overclocked to 4Ghz and never reaches 70c under load.

CPU: Intel 6850K

I haven't pushed this CPU so I can't really comment much. Its currently overclocked at 4.0 Ghz which was necessary in order to run the RAM at the XMP profile. It hasn't skipped a beat, doesn't overheat and really cops everything you throw at it with ease.

MOTHERBOARD: ASUS SABERTOOTH X99

This is a serious motherboard, the back plate is strong and its quite heavy, its got 11 fan headers for those of you that like fans, all controllable through Asus software which is fairly easy to use. 5 year warranty!

GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 FTW

I had my heart set on this from the start, I kept reading about the product recall concerning overheating issues and what not but I was not going to settle for anything less. Ive always used EVGA cards and was determined to do the same this time. To my fortune theses issues have all been fixed at this stage via an updated VBIOS released by EVGA, I can say that there are absolutely no issues regarding overheating on my card whatsoever, my max GPU temp after hours of playing BF1 at 1440p has been 68C which is exceptional.

FANS: CORSAIR PRO LED 120/140mm

These fans are awesome! They barely make a sound and they move a ton of air. The led works well but the brightness of the led depends on the rpm of the fan, lower rpm yielding a lower level of light, I was at first disappointed by this but have come to believe its fair enough. I can sleep in my room with the computer turned on and not be annoyed about the light produced nor am I getting blinded while playing games and such.

MONITOR: ACER PREDATOR 27' 2560x1440P

Really happy with this purchase, this monitor is perfect. Crystal clear gaming at 1440p! Works well right out of the box all I did really was turn the brightness down a bit. I will never return to 1080p gaming and I encourage anyone who is thinking about buying one to hurry up and do it already, you won't regret it!

That's it! All in all I'm extremely impressed with all parts chosen. This computer is a beast and will be able to handle the future of PC gaming for some time to come. If you have any questions I'm more than happy to help!

Cheers!

Part Reviews

CPU

Great processor, overclocked to 4.0 GHz

CPU Cooler

Works great! Cpu Temp is 60ish at max load.

Motherboard

I literally cannot fault it! This thing is a weapon, If I had to i would say that its limited to 3 way SLI although that would be pushing it. Stick with 2 High end GPU'S max if choosing this motherboard.

Storage

Got another one on the way, these things are great.

Video Card

Evga do great graphics cards! No overheating issues whatsoever as far as I'm concerned after the bios update all issues regarding the recall have been addressed!

Case

A thing of beauty!

Power Supply

Works really well and at such a great price!

Operating System

Does what its supposed to.

Case Fan

Awesome fans, move a ton of air and they barely make a sound.

Case Fan

Awesome fans, move a ton of air and they barely make a sound.

Monitor

Great quality monitor, I couldn't be more happy with this purchase!

Thanks mate! Yeah I agree the price for the case is a tad excessive.

This build is magnificent. Tho my only gripe is the keyboard and mouse (and the headset that you probably have). I'd recommend the corsair k95 RGB platinum and a G502 (or the Razer deathadder chroma) for the perfect gaming experience and the super high quality feel. Also almost all gaming headsets are not all that good. So go get yourself an m50x by audio techinca or a sennheiser 598 SE/ HD 600 with a DAC/amp or a soundcard (if you want 7.1 get a soundcard that has built in 7.1 like the STXII 7.1) for the best performance out of your headphones. Also a modmic 5 so you can talk and you can sound great to everyone you talk to. Other than the essay I gave you, your build is just beautiful and fantastic. +1! Cheers!

Thanks mate! Ive already got a new keyboard and headset, it might upset you but I got the razer blackwidow ultimate chroma V2 and the Kraken chroma 7.1 V2, ive got to say that M50x headset is really nice! Man know theres other things in life than Razer but they have never let me down over the past 7 years or so of pc gaming. Plus I like to have a nice consistency in my peripherals.

Going to get a new mouse soon with rgb so everything can be blue :) once I've done that I think ill update the photos so stay tuned.

Pc's nearly a year old now and I can't express how impressed I am in the quality of all the parts I chose, gonna take a while to pay the loan off but I'd happily do it all again.

Take care bud
