I started out having my son throw together some pretty basic components to get me on my way into the gaming community. I hadn't played on a computer since the early ms-dos, Sierra Games (Kings Quest, Police Quest, Etc) days and wanted to see why he keeps saying computers are the way to go. So we started with his old Cooler Master Tesseract Case, which was fine for me....at that point. I got a AMD Fx8350, an ASUS M5 A97 R2.0 mob, a 1050ti, 2x8 16 gig of ddr 3 ram, the Acer Monitor, a 1tb hdd. My son gifted me a 250 gb hdd, and the case as I said. And I bought the 450 psu. After running around to get some fans and fiddling about for around 2 hours we had it built.
We got it up and running. And it worked well enough for awhile. 60-90 FPS in most games in med settings. I could play DCS World at a pretty high frame rate so overall it was doing aight. But then I wanted to play games in better settings, wanted higher fps, wanted more memory demanding games. Wanted more power. Wanted VR. Got VR....VR no worky...por que...ohhh my ish isn't up to snuff. Time to move on up. I fell hard. I watched Youtube. I saw the possibilities. I saw a way that my artistic side could meld with my nerdier side and I could bond with the older boy at the same time. Bonus Polonus. So that's were we are today. I had to upgrade...except I probably didn't as bad as I originally thought. Sure my 1050ti wasn't anything to write home about but I had not also tried to unlock all its potential through OC's and system optimizations, etc. I'm a noob but as with everything else, in for a penny in for a pound. So I started with the a new mob and cpu. I choose the MSI B350 Tomahawk and R5 1600 because it's the best bang for my buck honestly. It came as a bundle. Done deal. Although, I should have sprung for the Gaming Pro Carbon x370 and if I could have I would have done it but, baby steps. The R5 gives me plenty of room of the bat for OC and it was fairly straight forward. Fiddle here. Tweak that. Rinse Repeat. I picked up a Samsung 850 evo to upgrade my boot drive and it did just that. Speed is worlds of difference. I picked up the Floe Riing water cooler because it went with the case and that's the reason picked up the additional fans. Because RGB. I had to get the 1070 Ti GAMING SC HYBRID & LED. Throw in a led strip/controller combo from Corsair, a K95 Corsair keyboard in platinum because its metal and IT'S METAL!! I got the Scimitar mouse to complete the Corsair RBG duo. I have had the Kraken 7.1's since the original parts buy and they are fine but I do covet the Philips Fidelity ear cans so we will see. Slap a new case on there and you've got my everything old is new again puter. I'll review parts in that spot but overall...I like where my current build is. My gaming performance is awesome. Running 90-200 FPS on most games in high or ultra. Only pushing 1080p but it works When I can, I do want to upgrade to a R7 1700x, a Pro Carbon mob and I want to add another 1070ti and run them in sli. I want to add dual custom water loops. I want a 4k monitor, another ssd and a m.2 drive. Then I'll be done...maybe. Or it'll be time to start another build.

ETA: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti GAMING, 08G-P4-5678-KR, 8GB GDDR5, SC HYBRID & LED I can't review the GPU on that page as it's is a custom product so here are my thought on that.. 1: I've got it oc to: 2100 gpu /4585 mem, 120%v 2: As far as an aio it works great. 3: Clean n Pretty.. 4: When I get the other card I am going to convert this to a water cooled card and run them together.

Part Reviews

A huge upgrade for me from the Fx8350. I enjoy the improved performance and I like that it is mostly looked at as what it is..a great processor at it's level for not to much moola. I love it. I didn't like the fan that came with it however but it's included and it works.

CPU Cooler

I got these after I couldn't find a Corsair H100i V2 at my local Micro Center. They thankfully Price Match so I got it for $10 of store price. I love the color and I love that they match the fans that came with the Thermaltake v71 RGB. What I didn't love was that the website is ambiguous as to which software to download so you may wind up as I did downloading the incorrect software and then cursing at the computer because no hardware was recognized. After digging around and realizing that I wasn't to use the software for the ohh so cleverly and closely named, Floe Riing Premium 240 tt Radiator software which I had downloaded. I then downloaded the correct software, the Floe Riing Premium 240 tt RGB Software. 1 egg cracked.

Good Motherboard for a good price. Works. Bios was futzy because of memory issues, but support for memory and compatibility issues have been well documented. Just make sure MSI supports the memory you are buying. I had to return my initial purchase because of it wasn't supported. As far as OC it doesn't have to many options that can overwhelm the novice. I am just able to get what I wanted out of it. I have my cpu at 4.0 Ghz, can fiddle with the voltage of ram and cpu. Not a bad mob to cut your teeth on. 1 egg cracked for memory hassle

Not the fasted not the slowest. In truth I probably am exasperating the situation by running 2x8 and 2x4 ddr4 2400 for a total of 24 Gb of Ram. My next purchase will probably be to match the 2x8 for a total of 32 Gb. No real eggs to crack other than the fact that it was a chore to find memory to work with the mob but that's more mobs fault.

I just picked this up in this last round of upgrades. I was staring at the ssds sitting in their sad little cage at the store like little nerd pets waiting to be brought home. I was looking for bang for buck and here comes a helpful young lad toting a stack of 30 of these drives to place in the sad ssd prison. So I asks him, Hey. I'm looking for a good value ssd drive to upgrade from my hdd boot drive, Whatcha got? And he tells me, Sir these items right here would suit your needs fantastically. Well, when someone says something will be fantastic that sets a certain expectation. Well it lived up to it. The only way it could be faster is if I didn't even have to log in.

It's a drive. It worked. I didn't pay for it so who am I to complain. Was my original boot drive which is what the ssd does now so I will be moving this to a secondary game drive.

I did buy this one and it works. It is my primary game drive. Good game drive.

If I could give this case more stars I would. Let's do this one vis a vis Pros vs Cons Pro: Lots of glass. 4 panels of 5mm thick tempered tinted glass.

Pro: 3 included Riing Fans.

Pro: Lots of space. Duh it's a full tower.

Pro: Nice dust filters

Pro: Easily detachable panels to service your puters inner guts. Especially the top and front where you can just pull with a bit of force to remove then intact. Side glass is huge. Did I mention there are 4 panels?

Pro: 4 USB Headers up front panel.

Pro: Good cable management (though my back ones need work)

Pro: Lots of options for fan mounting, radiator mounting, res mounting etc.

Con: 3 in 1: Expensive, Heavy, THE FINGERPRINTS!

Biggest Pro: This beast is dead sexy.

Power Supply

Work. Wish it was modular. Next Next Upgrade. Aka NNU. Maybe something in the 750-800 watt range

Case Fan

Technically these are in the NNU also as I scavd 3 blue led fans from my original build for now.

Can be a bit faded a edges

Awesome and substantial. That's all there is to say about that. Really l;ove the textured wasd keys that you can use to replace the original ones. Also this is my first mech board coming from a Devastator 2 keyboard and mouse combo.

Was in a Corsair mode during this Last Round of Upgrades so I picked this one up. I play alot of games where i keep wishing I had more bindable keys on my mouse. And now I have my answer. Also RGB.

Best gaming headphone I've had. Betteereer that the Turtle Beach ones I used to use. Last on the NNU

Thanks. Documenting the growth of my project and the resulting growth in his project. We are in the process of gifting the youngest boy the left over parts which will make a pretty mean starter.

man, with a 1070ti, you really need a better monitor!

aburrell23 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

I agree! The next purchases include 2 Samsung 32" 1ms response time, 144 htz refresh rate.

I suggest you buy a 3TB HDD? More storage for only at least $30. You won’t have to worry about storage for a while if you only use your PC for gaming and don’t record videos or stream.

I'm looking on purchasing a R5 1600, 8 gb ddr4 3000 and a 1050ti (i will upgrade later) and the same psu you have. Will overclocking the CPU, ram, and GPU be to much for the 450w power supply you picked? ( I'm just asking if you had issues with the power supply after overclocking)

aburrell23 submitter 3 Builds 2 points 10 months ago

I didn’t have a problem. I think the r5 only pulls 95w and the 1050 sips on the juice. To be perfectly honest, I’d just pony up the extra $20 or whatnot and get at least a 650w. You’ll need more power for sure when you upgrade

Thank you for the response, I always find other peoples experience very helpful!

It is big. It’s a commitment. But if you have the space and want a lot of room for water cooling then it fits the need. I’m actually going to change over when the new phanteks evolv x case comes out next month. Also depends on what your space looks like. I’ve got 2x72” desks for my setup area so I’ve got a ton of room.

its a much sexier case and all around the V71 is awesome. But like i said its a commitment. If you cant fit a Full Tower on your desk then go for the other ones. I mean, its about 3 inches taller and 2 inches longer, width is the same as regular cases. For me...it was all that glass that got me.
