Description

This is my first build in over a decade, but you know what they say "Good things come to people who wait." I named this build the WidowMaker because if my wife knew how much I spent on this build she would literally kill me! The main purpose of this machine is my gaming/content creation rig. The main concerns for this build was space and noise. I don't have a lot of space so I needed a case that would not take up a lot of room and at the same time be easy to work with and look sexy while sitting on my desk. I went with the Evolv from Phanteks and I'm glad I did. The build quality is amazing along the engineering that went into this thing. They thought of almost everything and made cable routing a breeze. It can be a little cramped at time for people with big hands but I think I was able to realize the full potential of my build. The corsair AIO system is a very noisy at full blast so I ordered Noiseblocker fans for the Radiator. I changed the behemoth front 240mm front facing fan from phanteks with two Noctua 140mm fans and they are whisper silent at full blast. I was dead set on purchasing a Titan X for graphical duty but something told me to wait a week or two. I'm so happy that I did because I was lucky enough to snatch up a 980 Ti on launch day. This baby is a little monster, it chews through benchmarks and games without a stutter. It definitely gets loud and real hot during extended gaming sessions but I plan on throwing another corsair AIO water cooler on it once their new HG10 N980 shrouds are released. I went with 32gb of ddr3 2400 memory because why the hell not? I got a smoking deal on a samsung 850pro 512Gb as my main drive and a couple of mechanical drives as secondaries. I think the main problem at this point is CPU temps under full load. I plan on doing a delid on the processor which should drop temps by 20C. I plan on updating this thread as I go along but the plan is just to tweak her to perfection at this point.

Update #1: Decided to lower the OC, just didn't feel like the performance was worth the added temp and vcore. I lowered the OC to 4.5ghz from 4.8 with a 1.246 vcore hitting 75C at full load. Still tweaking the vcore to see how much lower I can go.

Update #2: I changed out the noisblocker radiator fans to the noctue NF-F12 industrial fans and let me tell you these fans move and immense amount of air. They are not silent but the sound that they make is not annoying. They move an immense amount of air compared to the stock corsair fans and they are quieter than them as well. I have found my new go to radiator fan they are highly recommended. On the Overclocking front I have kept her running at 4.5ghz but have gotten the vcore down to 1.8 and hitting temps at 65c at full load. I'm really pleased so far!

Update #3: Well I just pulled off a delid and it thankfully went off without a hitch. I used Cool Laboratory liquid pro directly on the CPU and put Arctic MX4 on the lid and my temps have dropped an average 15C which is phenomenal. It was a super easy process and I recommend it to anybody looking to drop their temps. My next update I should have my EVGA hybrid AIO cooler ship in for my 980ti sometime later today. I can't wait, stay tuned people! Here is the link to the youtube video, it's kind of long feel free to fast forward it https://youtu.be/erbhskSHRPc

Update #4: A lot has happened since the last update. I finally decided on a triple monitor setup. I love these 144hz monitors from Asus. They are a bit old but they do the job nicely. I had no idea things would look so beautiful as opposed to 60hz. I also converted my gigabyte 980ti into an evga hybrid by slapping on the cooler and flashing a custom bios. My temps have dropped an average 20° C drop in temps and i was able to achieve an extra 70mhz core overclock after being under water as opposed to air cooling. The biggest reason though for me to water the cool the card was the noise. Now things are much quieter and I am very happy with the end result. I'm not sure where I will go next with this. I can see myself eventually getting another 980ti to run in SLI in the future.

Nice build man! +1 for sure. Finally a name for a build that has an actual meaning behind it. Quite funny as well. Gets old seeing "First build" "The Beast" "First Gaming PC" real quick.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 2 points 34 months ago

Thanks for the kind words the build has been progressing nicely and I will be updating the comments with the latest.

I was going to make a joke about the wife killing you over the budget, but you beat me to it. :D

Like the saying goes, I hope when I die my wife does not sell (insert item here) for what I told her I paid for it.

vordar 1 Build 2 points 35 months ago

The word "pretty" doesn't begin to describe that case. Looks amazing!

That temp though, what are you throwing at it to be hitting 85? I don't think I've done too much with my new build, but I think I've peaked at 50, and even the GPU hasn't been more than 72*.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

during stability testing using aida64 it will hit temps in the mid to upper 80's depending on ambient temps.

Stupidmouth 2 Builds 2 points 35 months ago

Whats your vcore at to achieve 4.8? For my 4690k I was at 4.5ghz with 1.295v but my max temp during an 8hr stress test was 76. Are you at 1.3v+?

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

I was running 1.33 vcore but my temps would hit 85. I decided to throttle it down to 4.5 ghz and I'm running a vcore of 1.24 and hitting temps around 75 now.

Stupidmouth 2 Builds 2 points 35 months ago

I think that's much more ideal. Very nice

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 3 points 35 months ago

Just did a little more tweaking and dropped the vcore to 1.163. The temps are hovering around 59-63 at full load. I'm still running Aida 64 but everything seems stable so far.

Looks great! But just one small question, why is the LED on the corsair logo blue instead of red or green?

I love those covers that go above the PSU, makes every rig way cleaner. I wish my 450D came with one :D.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

I had the colors on red and green just changing colors periodically for kicks.

XxD34THxX 2 points 35 months ago

such high temps. Did you put too much Thermal Paste? Or is the cooler mounted wrong?

Wince 4 points 35 months ago

It does appear to be at 4.8GHz

XxD34THxX 1 point 35 months ago

true..

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 34 months ago

Just pulled of a Delid that dropped my temps considerably and also included a link to the video in comments if you are interested in the procedure.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

I'm not sure, that could be a reason but I only put a small dab and spread it out across the processor. In any event I will be performing a delid on the processor and changing from arctic silver 5 to the mx4 thermal compound to see if there will be a large improvement.

auldae 1 Build 2 points 35 months ago

Yes, please. Love this build, in this case (No pun intended.) I think upgrading that blower GPU is a great idea. Hope you can fit another AIO, because custom looping that case looks like it may call for some CAD software.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 2 points 35 months ago

Yea I'm looking for the simplicity of an AIO. I'm just waiting for corsair to release the sleeves for the 980 ti and I will be slapping a 140mm AIO radiator to the rear for sure.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 34 months ago

Just slapped on the evga hybrid cooler on the card and it helped drop temps by 15 - 20 degrees celsius. Will be posting a video soon on the install and I also Delidded the processor which dropped temps considerably. The link to the video is in the description.

Whats the difference between an 850 Pro and 850 EVO? Sweet build man I've always loved the evolv cases since I first saw them. +1

TheBloggster 2 points 35 months ago

You should be really proud of this machine, well done.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

Thank you for the kind words. I am thrilled with the way she turned out. Now I'm just trying to extract as much performance out of her as possible.

Kiwiman 1 Build 2 points 35 months ago

Great looking build! Tempted to get a 980 ti..

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 2 points 35 months ago

I'm loving it so far but I am kind of curious about the new AMD fury water cooled edition. The 980 ti fans get pretty loud when you have everything turned up to ultra settings.

vikingXcore 4 Builds 2 points 35 months ago

Oh that case is so pretty! I could jus-

Sees noctua fans Ewww... yeah.... that's the good stuff...

Hahaha they are nice fans, but def ruined me. Went from Fabio to Old Gregg in .0834 sec flat.

Other than that, it looks great!

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

I know the Noctua's aren't pretty to look at but they can't even be seen through the window. You can hear the quality once they fire up. Nice smooth sounds with no whine. Just the sounds of moving air. They are worth every penny!

vikingXcore 4 Builds 2 points 35 months ago

Haha I thought the point of Noctua is you can't hear the quality! xP

Yeah they are great fans. I actually do like the industrial ones (I think that's what they're called; the grey/charcoal ones)!

robcandraw 2 Builds 2 points 35 months ago

Nice build man! Grats on your dream finally coming true. I can relate. Have fun with the new rig and nice case BTW.

Eggz 2 Builds 2 points 35 months ago

Cool, I love how you squeezed an H110 GT in a mATX case! I did the same with my 350 Case recently, but it's an X79 with last year's GPU. You're going to love it! :-)

shuttlevvorth 2 points 33 months ago

Damn that is a sexy case. Great work!

thomaskwt 1 point 34 months ago

The tek syndicate said that the thermal compound that came with the Corsair h110gt was actually better than after market stuff. What was your experience with it?

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 34 months ago

Personally It's hard for me to give a fair comparison because I didn't keep the stock thermal paste after the delid process. I would go with the arctic cooling compound though. It has a great reputation for a reason.

Mr.pcman 1 point 34 months ago

Nice build man, looking into something similar myself :) btw, about how much did the gtx 980 ti hybrid cost for you? The cost isn't listed on pcpartpicker.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 34 months ago

The 980ti started life as a gigabyte reference card, I slapped on the evga hybrid cooler and flashed a custom bios so now its even faster than a 980ti hybrid. A hybrid rums around $750 I believe.

Mr.pcman 1 point 34 months ago

Oh nice. Thanks!

syntaxerrur 22 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

Hey nice setup! What kind of games do you play on 5760x1080 and what frames do you get with the 980 ti. High/ultra settings? I'm looking at project cars, star citizen and elite: dangerous.

DTI466 1 Build 1 point 32 months ago

I have the opposite situation. I have no wife and no money.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Don't worry we all start off that way but eventually you'll have both if you want it.

xxthe_remedyxx 1 point 29 months ago

Beautiful. I'm building in the exact same case and had a question for you. I'm planning on a 980TI Hybrid myself, set up exactly how you have yours. Do you think a 280mm Kraken x61 will fit with the Hybrid?

I don't think that's how it works.

I would have loved the ATX version but I could no longer wait for phanteks to get ship them. I might upgrade at a later date to it.

MegaHurT submitter 1 Build 1 point 35 months ago

Hey Radox just pulled off the delid. It was super easy to do I'll be posting up a video in the comments section if you are interested but I saw a 15C drop in temps. It was super easy to do as well.
