After 2 years and god-knows how many upgrades done to the rig, I finally managed to curb my upgrading urges(at least, for the year). Decided on a Black, white and Blue rig since I liked that color combination the most(and i'm too cheap to get pure white parts). All prices in SGD as i'm too lazy to convert everything to USD :P

Part Reviews

Got a 2.3Ghz engineering sample instead of the retail unit, does pretty well for an old cpu, performance seems on par with an i5 6/7600k in games and to a ryzen 1600 in multithreaded tasks.

CPU Cooler

Pretty decent cooler that manages to cool my 2670 v2 well, load temps are typically at 55-60 degrees celsius.

The hynix SSD i have is actually the SL301, pretty good SSD for the price.

Great case from fractal design, very easy to work with and has lots of space for cable management.

Power Supply

Excellent PSU, not 200mm long as listed though.

It'll work for a generic X79 motherboard, but it just 'works'. no overclocking on the cpu or ram, couldn't set my ram to 1600mhz and stuck at 1333mhz despite having an option to do so in the BIOS. Very basic motherboard.

Do you have any negative pressure with 2 intakes and 3 exhausts? Does it accumulate dust?

that cooler looks SO DUSTY!

added the 2 top fans last week so can't really tell yet. last case with the same fan config was pretty dusty near the intakes when i upgraded if that helps.

What kind of OS is it running? Windows 10 by any chance? I'm wondering if 10 will work on X79 with a E5 V2 Xeon like your setup.

Windows 10 Pro N, yeah works just fine with windows 10.

Thank you! This is good news.

I'd flip the top two for intake fans but aside from that and old hardware it's pretty ;P

How's the motherboard?

bios doesn't have any overclocking features(no XMP) and is quite basic. they sell under lots of brands so YMMV

I'm trying to put together a build around the same processor you have, and I'm running into problems I'm sure you faced. Were there other boards you were considering? Everything else is going for outrageous prices that make me want to email the sellers and say "really?".

I like your build though! Do you know how it compares to an i7-7700k? That's what I'm currently using, but I'm planning on putting together a second rig with the E5-2670V2.

I did consider boards from the usual MSI/ASUS/etc. but they were either too expensive or not available. Distributor clearance had some ECS boards for good prices but they got sold out in minutes. can't blame the sellers, X79 boards aren't made anymore(except for these chinese boards) but the demand is still there so the price goes up. the chinese boards that aren't the earliest revision will support ECC Registered RAM which you can find cheap. taobao may have cheaper deals than ebay if you can read chinese/badly translated english.

The 2670 v2 will likely perform better in multithreaded apps at stock but won't perform as well for gaming. https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/62476-post-your-cinebench-r15r1152003-scores-over-1000-submissions/ i got 1200cb for cinebench, the 6/7700k is slower but catches up when overclocked.
