Description

Usage: Coding, Media, Telecommuting, Fragging.

I actually didn't build this all at once. A couple of the hard drives are relatively old, and the Blu-Ray player is no spring chicken. Most of the rest, though, I bought over the last year. I just replaced the keyboard and speakers this week, and added the headset, so a friend suggested it was about time to post it online.

I only really had two problems with the build. I had a different case initially (from my prior build), but I couldn't install both of the GPUs (vertically they were fine, but there was a poorly-conceived protrusion on the motherboard that prevented the lower one from getting seated horizontally). Since I had to replace my motherboard, I figured I might as well replace the case while I was at it - I really wanted something where I could hot swap my media drives without opening it up.

The second issue ended up stemming from that. I had the Corsair H100i, which fit perfectly along the top of my old case. With the TTL10, though, I would have had to remove the 240mm fan it comes with - and I really didn't want to lose the aesthetic appeal of the lightning from the top grill. Since there was no other place to put it, without doing drastic modifications to the case (cutting into it, etc.), I went ahead and gave the H100i to a friend and picked up the H80i in it's place.

Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions on things to do that would give more bang for the buck next time around.

This is a BEAST of a build but why sli 660ti? Why not go with a single 680?

I went with the SLI 660ti's for a couple of reasons. By doing two of them, they each have 2GB of memory, as opposed to the 2GB that the 680 has total. Also, I got a good deal on the 660's for buying two, so it saved me about $150 total.

something you should know is that even though both 660's have 2GB of vram, you do not get the benefit of having 4GB, only 2 will be used

Fair point if I was actually playing most of my games Sli. I usually don't - I'll use one for gaming, one for Plex or Netflix, and the last one for email, communicating, etc.

Hold up... You have two graphics cards, but you don't enable SLI when you game???

Why not a 770 4GB?

I considered it, but when I upgraded my graphics card was when my prior one went out, and no one local to me carried any of the 700 series. It was 660 or 680, or something ridiculously over the top. :)

I know, right? Just moved in about a month ago, and haven't gotten around to finishing up my study yet. Too much else to do around the rest of the place. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can break out the cable ties and lock it all down.

+1 for firefly reference. This is probably an older build so nice job.

Thanks! I was watching it when a friend suggested I throw my rig up on here. Figured I might as well leave it on for the pics.

Edit: Just realized you were probably referring to the build name, rather than the episode playing on Plex in the screenshot. I actually used a Firefly theme throughout my network to track the devices (so my desktop is Mal, my tablet is River, my router is Serenity, Google TV box is CORTEX, etc.).

Desk name? is it the walker edison 3 piece soreno?

It's actually a Z-Line...but also called a Soreno. Might be one of those situations where a manufacturer has multiple brands. http://www.z-linedesigns.com/product/108-Solano-computer-Desk

I have the same desk. My only complaint is that it's to low. I ended up buying some rising legs at Ikea to make it 5 inches taller. Makes the difference.

He said he started building this last year and upgraded over time. He probably got the 660Ti's a long while before 760's came out.

He should have just gotten a time machine then...
