Description

I built this machine to replace my 2009 Macbook Pro. I needed a machine to rival my workstation at the office. I work mostly with After Effects, Maya, and Vray.

My intention was to build something that I could upgrade in the future, and that would allow me to start gaming on PC. I plan on getting some higher quality monitors when I can afford it, with better color quality, but I wanted to get this thing built as soon as possible.

Case I absolutely love this case. The shroud covering the PSU, and the space behind motherboard for nearly effortless cable management are key selling points for me.

CPU After doing quite a bit of research, I decided on the 5820k over the 5860 because the price difference didn't justify the increase in speed. I don't plan on running more than one gpu either.

CPU Cooling Initially I was going to go with the Kraken x61, but I didn't want to sacrifice the top HDD trays to mount it. Unfortunately, I ended up sacrificing them anyways because the radiator for the gpu wants to be mounted above the gpu. I'm happy with my decision though, because the tubes on the Corsair look way better than the Kraken. I'm a little annoyed by the usb cable coming from the bottom of the cooler, but I've been told you don't need it after initial set up?

GPU I thought several times about getting something cheaper, especially with the possibility of new cards dropping this year. In the end, I decided on the 980 Ti, mostly because of the integrated liquid cooling.

Storage I've left myself some room for a few HDDs, but I'm just holding off until I can re-cooperate my savings account and I actually needing more storage space.

Very nice. I wouldn't be surprised if this one was the next featured build. Just needs a bit more parts selection for the description+1

Lovely build. I run the same CPU, RAM, Mobo and SSD. Great components. Wish I had your GPU tho. I use mine for revit mainly.

"To replace my 2009 MacBook Pro"

I'd say you achieved your goal pretty well

I'll get the specs when I'm in tomorrow. They're actually upgrading all the workstations in the design department right now, as they are a few years old. Thank you though, I was trying to keep it clean!

I am VERY interested in this, you better report back with hardware that this PC can beat because.... I just don't want to see the 980ti lose to some old hardware lol. Overall nice build! :D

It looks like the current systems are i7 960, 16GB & Quadro K5000. I believe the new machines are i7 5960, 32GB DDR4, m.2, & they are keeping the existing gpu. Of course we have a large render farm as well, running a few generations of machines.

Oh well the Quadro would make sense since they are better for rendering workload.
