Description

My first ever build for my son. He has an old laptop of ours for schoolwork, but wanted to get into PC gaming. So for a combined Birthday/Xmas gift, he is getting a computer. I learned a lot from people on this site and others. There were some problems that I was able to solve using information on the internet, and one I was not able to solve. All in all, for a first time builder and new low end gamer, I think we did pretty well.

(edit) Thanks everyone for the help! We'll be back soon when it's time to break it open again and add stuff!

Why a z97 mobo and a locked haswell (non refresh) chip. And why did you combine a 750 ti with an i5? Better gpu > better processor.

it is alot easier to upgrade a gpu than it is to upgrade a cpu.

You'll have to be more specific as to how I made a mistake and why. I was learning while building, and decisions were made on price and availability. The original motherboard I chose was not what was described when I went to get it. I was put in the position of buying for price. Also, the processor was suggested by several people for the needs I described and I got it at a great price as well as the graphics card. My son isn't allowed to play high intensity fps games, and is mostly interesting in modding Minecraft at this point.

Don't get me wrong, that's a great processor. I just don't get why you mixed it with a overclocking motherboard.

Turns out the motherboard I went to buy was in a stack of open box for sale items. I didn't want to chance something like that while I'm just learning. I called around and one of the guys I met when I was asking questions said to come over and he'd give me a price break on a board I could use. I tried to pick the best parts I could afford, and still leave room to improve as we learn what we really need. No offense taken at all, the reason I'm here are the questions and answers. Any suggestions you have, I'd love to hear!

That's my old C64. When he started with Minecraft and LEGO robotics, he really started to get interested in the whys and hows of computers. I thought it'd be cool to show him how home computing was in my youth so I pulled it out of all the stuff we liberated from my Mom's basement. Thus the spark for his own computer. He has an old third hand laptop, but it's gets very bogged down when he tries play games and it's really more for schoolwork than anything else.

That 750 will be fine. I was about to pair my 4690k with a 750ti, I'm not hardcore gaming, only like CS:GO and DotA2 and other simple strat games. But that card will do some modern titles. This builds fine, and it has upgrade room.

Thanks, it's our first ever build and I am still learning the specs and functions of each part.

Did you let him help build?

It's kind of a surprise, but I want him to figure out what he wants and needs and we can mod it together.
