Description

Hi guys,

I'm pretty new here and the last time I made a PC was back in 2009! I was rocking an i5 with an HD5770 all on a ROG mobo. I think it had a III in it. It served me well, but eventually started to gather dust up in the attic.

Then recently the 1080 got announced and with Sony and Microsoft looking to refresh their consoles a lot sooner than expected, gave me the perfect excuse to come back and buy a load of new shiny metal things.

I plan on gaming with it and not a lot else. (Although without the 1080 I just hope Psychonauts runs)

CPU

Ok so I went with the i5-6600K, combined with the mobo and CPU cooler I should be fine cranking it up!

CPU Cooler

I was going to originally go with the Dark Rock 3 Pro. Mainly because it is rather snazzy looking, but I was also going to revive my old Cooler Master Storm Scout case from 2009. Unfortunately that cooler wouldn't squeeze in so I went with the nearly as cool looking 212X. Went with the X over the EVO because it was the newer model and about the same price. I then decided on a new case anyway, but had already purchased the cooler. No regrets, saved me a few quid.

Mobo

As I mentioned earlier I had previously had a ROG mobo and loved it. Did I need everything on it? Nope, but it came with a free 240GB SSD, so was worth it over the Pro gaming and Ranger models. It will also help me get the most out of my other parts.

Every port was a super convenient place (generally around the edges), apart from one of the fan pins that was placed towards the middle. I guess I could have put the CPU fan in that slot, but the booklet (yes I read the booklet) said to pop it up at the top.

Oh and it came with DOOM

Memory

Nothing too crazy, 16GB, low profile RAM at a good price point. I believe its just dropped another £10 now, so looks promising if I ever want to fill all 4 slots.

SSD HDD

Salvaged the HDD from my old PC. I will swap it out in the near future for something more substantial later, but will do for now. The same goes with the SSD. I may opt for a larger one to compliment it.

PSU

Went for what went with the best reviews on here really. Didn't go overkill and being fully-modular helped make putting it together that bit easier.

OS

Bought a retail version of Windows 10. Only a few quid more than an OEM version. Thinking long term there.

Case

Ok, so I was going to use my old case, but with it being caked in dust that needed scraping out I opted to buy a new one. Had a chat on here with someone and they recommended either the one I went with or the H440. The H440 was a little larger and came with extra fans pre-installed. Once I had done the maths however it worked out cheaper to buy the S340 and a couple of the Pure Wings 2. I have no regrets. Even with the colour. I was originally going for a black and red build, but when Novatech only had the white case in stock I went with that instead. White/black/red still works. I may get a white LED strip to brighten up the interior at some point because with all the red glow, it still looks a little dark in there.

GPU

All I need now is my graphics card. I oped out of getting a FE edition and got myself an ASUS GTX 1080 Strix on order with Amazon. It was either that or the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW, but for the extra £10 I was happy with going with the ROG theme throughout.

Sorry for rambling on. I cant really do much with it until the 1080 arrives. I'll save all the OCing until then. I'll just have to spend my time downloading my games in anticipation.

+1 Nice, solid build. Good choices!

The only thing I may have done differently is get a liquid cooler. Something like the Corsair H55. Not necessarily for the performance either but for the aesthetics.

Thanks,

I know I'm being silly, but I couldn't bring myself to go down the liquid cooling route. The cooler does stick out a mile without a GPU though.

Fair enough. The air cooler will perform fine anyways :)

H55 is a solid choice, but the H60 has the best price/performance. http://m.hardocp.com/article/2014/11/24/corsair_h60_aio_cpu_cooling_system_update_review/4#.V1iXlnpOnqA

+1 for the wave! Super clean cable management, good job! I like my Asus components as well.

Haha thanks, it was either that or flipping the bird.

Every box seemed to come with a million cable ties. the case + mobo layout did help massively.

Thank you, the 1080 is definitely not in that case.

It looks like you had to drill holes in the glass to fit the heat sink, the glass is toooo clean.
