I wanted to put together a VR ready system that would not only run video games at highest settings but also allow for running multiple VMs at the same time. Specifically Cisco's VIRL as that tends to have high system requirements. Budget was set as less than $3000 (including a 21:9 monitor, which I have decided to refrain from buying at the moment).
After looking at other people's build's here, I knew I wanted a white case and use RGB lighting. The hardest part was deciding whether to go for an i7-6700K or the newer Broadwell-E series chip. After much reading and video watching, I went with the Broadwell-E i7-6800K processor as I figured, it would help with multi-threaded applications more.
I knew I wanted a GTX 1080 GPU, but the question was, which one? Especially since these cards were mostly sold out everywhere and I didn't want to pay more than the retail price. At 11:30 pm one night, while checking 'nowinstock.net', I found the Zotac AMP Extreme 1080 and went with it.
Being my first build, I ran in to rookie issues like no video when everything was connected, cable management, optimal LED lighting installation etc. After everything was resolved, the system was up and running, needless to say, I'm pretty pleased with the build.
Let me know if you have any questions. More pictures coming soon.
