Description

Will update as I go along. This is my very first personal PC. I have built many rigs in the past for friends but never one for myself. I wanted to go full RGB. I'm a simple guy, I like white LEDs but with RGB I can play around every now and then. If you haven't noticed by now I am a fan of Rick & Morty. My main use for this PC will be......whatever I want! Enjoy the pictures! There's only so much a smartphone camera can do (Nexus 6p). Need new pics with my Grid hub and other SSD's installed. Sit tight for those. I'll be traveling for a few weeks. MSI X99 Godlike Gaming will arrive in a few weeks!!!

Update : Jan 28, 2017 Build has been sold. I still have all my storage. Will be building a Z270 + 7700K. Stay tuned for that. And thanks to all who liked and commented on my build!

March 5th, 2017 I'm back guys with my new build. Check it out https://pcpartpicker.com/b/tZ8Ycf

When you have over 20tb of storage... Then a 1070 8gb DUDE HOW MUCH STORAGE DO YOU NEED

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 3 points 9 months ago

When the internet apocalypse comes you guys won't be asking me this question!

DoltonTheComputerNoob 1 point 9 months ago

What is the pc going to be used for?

alltrees 2 points 9 months ago

Thanks for the cable [pictures which are sensually stimulating]!

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Very welcome! I'm still in doubt. I probably should've gone with black ModFlex. I'll give it some time. Maybe these will grow on me.

Wolfemane 4 Builds 2 points 9 months ago

Miniverse!

+1

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 3 points 9 months ago

Wabbalubbadubdub!

NeonThought 4 Builds 2 points 9 months ago

You know, I'm just not sure if you have enough memory installed. Not nearly enough. Nope.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 2 points 9 months ago

I think you're right. Let me grab my keys and head back to MicroCenter!

NeonThought 4 Builds 2 points 9 months ago

Good, cuz you don't want to be shaming yourself in public with that piddly 64Gb. Come back when you can VM all the VMs... ALL OF THEM!

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 2 points 9 months ago

I do wonder how many Linux VMs I can run at once. You're gonna have me up all night trying it!

NickDVL 1 Build 2 points 9 months ago

Stunning build! +1 (and I thought I was being excessive with 2.5TB of SSD lol...)

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Thanks! Yeah I know, if it was 1983 people would've lost their damn minds!

CRS10114 7 Builds 2 points 9 months ago

Very nice build, but I highly recommend flipping the fans on the radiator. All of your fans are currently exhausting.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Correct, only one other person has caught that lol. It is due to aesthetics. I'm getting pretty cold temps (about the same with them flipped the correct way) so I don't see any harm.

CRS10114 7 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

It's really a matter of balancing your airflow. You should have some sort of intake and some sort of exhaust. Not all of one.

Your fans are currently fighting each other for air, and since there is no intake, the air that does make it into the case is from all the nooks and crannies on your case which will bring in more dust.

I'd say function over form, but it's your computer. I can't make you do anything. Just highly suggest you consider my advice.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 2 points 9 months ago

You're 100% right. But the hottest component in my case is barely reaching 35°C. So I don't see a reason to change the orientation. I hardly ever game btw.

CRS10114 7 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Fair enough. If it works for you, then I can't really argue against it. It sure as hell looks good.

What games do you play that the hottest component barely reaches 35°C?

Cheers

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 2 points 9 months ago

30-35°C is my idle. I rarely play on PC, I'm more of a console gamer trying to transition. Assassin's Creed for now. It's my all time favorite.

Thanks!

avgjoeywong 2 points 9 months ago

Congrats on build. Pcpartpicker needs to put slideshow on the images. This would benefit big time on a build like this.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Thanks! Yeah I know right? That would be sweet.

Caminon 1 Build 2 points 9 months ago

R.I.P 6th AER Fan, Hue+ couldn't supply enough power (WHY NZXT, WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY)

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

The Hue+ hub does not supply power (I wish it did). Fans get power from NZXT Grid controller. Not sure what happened with that fan. It was working before. The CAM software is so messed up right now and NZXT can't seem to fix it properly. Instead they want us to tinker with it to make it work out the box.

Nice build. Really like the RGBs but why use the 6800K for a CPU? The only outstanding thing from other Intel's is that the 6800K is a 6-core. But overall cool build.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Thank you. More cores/threads for VMs and multitasking. However, I'm running into the notorious faulty USB issue on the Mobo. I ordered the MSi Godlike Carbon. It is overkill, I've been contemplating on selling everything and doing a Kaby Lake Z270 build.

kingtanky 1 point 9 months ago

Since Kaby Lake released about a week ago, there still aren't many chipsets that fit Kaby Lake straight out of the box w/o any updates. If I were in this situation, I would wait another month or two for Kaby Lake to mature (no more problems) then sell the parts. I feel like the new MSi mobo should be the only change on your PC for these first two months and only replace parts that are conflicting with your performance.

Dehriz 2 points 9 months ago

A round of applause for that desktop background

1+

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Thank you! Only Rick and Morty background I found in 2560x1080

andr3wloo 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

Aside from your CPU + mobo, the #of SSDS, and RGB lighting...we have the exact same machine.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Pics or it didn't happen! lol. That's easy to believe due to the case being very popular. And CPU cooler being named one of the best.

andr3wloo 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

Haha. Nothing yet still waiting for parts.

The case fans was #2 and didn't get them because it was back ordered. I'll probably get RGB fans when I can.

I think I found the later gen PSU? Still Evga supernova.

I waited for Kaby Lake and respective MOBO...employee discount.

I think the same EVGA 1070? They have 5 variants.

Case is amazing so it's on everyone's wish list.

Monitor is the same.

Ended up with a single SSD, pcie...I get employee discount

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

These fans are surprisingly very quiet. So I'm happy with them. I wanted Kaby Lake too, but I wanted the extra cores for multitasking. There's many 1070s, including different FTWs. I would stay away from a FTW DT. Case is amazing in person. I've seen hundreds of builds online but never seen the case in person! Monitor is great, no complaints, wish it had speakers lol Single SSDs are fine for normal people unlike myself.

andr3wloo 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

Yeah I don't do much work with media or hosting so I'm good with a single SSD. Kaby lake isn't great obviously. Did you place the fans on the water cooling radiator? Ps I got the same 240mm RGB one as well.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Yes, I was expecting to get roasted. In the orientation, I technically don't have an intake, All fans including rad are exhausts. I fit a small fan below the shroud blowing some air to the GPU. No issues with heat at all. CPU sits @ 25C, GPU 30C, HDDs 30C

Lyrix 1 point 9 months ago

This looks amazing! but maybe put the gpu one slot up and place rick next to the gpu

question regarding the AER FANS....I recently purchased 3*140mm aer fans and I noticed when I mount them on the roof on my evolv i get a rattling noise when my custom curve from my grid v2 fluctuates the fans between 900-1200 rpm....do you hear any rattling at all? Its kinda weird all 3 of mine do this but the strange thing is it only does this when its horizontal, when I mount them vertically they dont rattle. Starting to think its a defect in the design

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Sounds weird. Never had an issue at all. No rattling. I'm surprised how quiet these are actually.

acp11 2 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

im thinking because you have the 120mm one...I know 140mm fans are sometimes more problematic, especially having to do deal with corsair stock fans.

PaulMP 1 point 9 months ago

Very nice looking build! NZXT should really make the intake variant of the Aer RGB fans. How is the noise of the dual 12mm exhaust front radiator fans?

I have the same case and I'm about to buy the kraken x52 or x62. This orientation looks the best, but I'm not sure about the noise.

Thanks!

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 2 points 9 months ago

I'd like to add that NZXT had missing cables in there packages for the Kraken AIO and Hue+. I contacted them 9x in the span of 2 weeks all in different forms of communication, it was nearly impossible to get help. When I did it took an additional week of emails back and forth telling the RMA guy what I needed. I live 30mins away from NZXT'S office in Industry, California, but a small envelope took 25 days to get to my house. To make things even better their CAM software will brick your devices, making them useless. Therefore I will be selling all my NZXT parts and buying all Corsair. Contemplating on just burning them and shooting a video for NZXT.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Thanks. The noise on the stock rad fans are dead silent. The AER RGB fans are not as silent. But pretty close. Especially if you're controlling them with the Grid hub. It utilizes pwm control.

KevinSlamsPigs 1 point 9 months ago

Really love this build. In fact, I like it so much that my next build is going to be very similar to this one :). Btw, where can I find the background pic you used in your monitor on pics #6 and #7? The gray background with the trees and stuff...looks very cool. Anyways, great build +1.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Thank you! I'd stay away from NZXT if I were you. Stick with Corsair as much as you can. NZXT left a bad taste in my mouth. Read my other comment on why. This Phanteks case however is amazing. Looks great and you can do just about anything you want inside. Here's a link for the wallpaper https://wallpaperscraft.com/image/wood_black-and-white_from_below_trees_gloomy_kroner_fog_silence_60216_2560x1080.jpg

KevinSlamsPigs 1 point 9 months ago

Thanks!!

J-man767 1 point 9 months ago

So I can see where you put your six Terabyte Hard drives, you've got two in brackets and one on the floor of the case. I also see where you've got your SanDisk SSD and one of the Crucial SSD's. My question is where have you hidden your other two Crucial SSD's, you magician?! I looked through the photos and couldn't find hide nor hair of your SSD's.

Edit: Never mind, I read the description carefully this time. Sorry for wasting your time.

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

I had them between the PSU and HDDs on the floor burried under the PSU cables. But I've sold the build and all the SSDs. I'm gonna keep the HDDs and m.2 and probably do a single 2TB SSD.

Datamatr1x 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Did you really have to hoard all of the Aer fans to yourself? I would really liked to have purchased a couple for my build. haha +1

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 2 points 8 months ago

I was blown away nobody wanted them when I put them up for sale. Everyone wanted my Hue+ hub and strips which they can get on Amazon with free 2 day shipping lol. But no one cared about the sold out hard to get Aer fans. Finally after a couple weeks I got a buyer for them. They're pretty quiet and push good amount of air however NZXT kills the fun with their terrible software and even worse customer service. Everything is sold now. I've already started my Z270 + 7700K build using all Corsair products.

luca2 1 point 7 months ago

hey, I have a question regarding the fans. On the Phanteks website, they display 2 140mm fans placed in the front. However, I've seen numerous builds of this case with 3 120mm fans in the front. Do 3 120mm fans fit properly and is it just personal preference between placing2 140mm fans or 3 120mm fans in the front area?

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 7 months ago

Yeah it's just personal preference. 2x 140mm or 3x 120mm fans fit fine in the front.

conrapp 1 point 5 months ago

Insane!!! I love this overkill 64 gb and the 6 core chip!

A few Qs if you don't mind helping:

Did you mount the internal AERs on the Kraken in push/pull with the stock fans on front of the rad? Or did you leave the stock fans off and just mount the AERs on the inside of the rad?

Also, the one thing holding me back from this case is the PSU cut out in the shroud. Do you think there is enough room in between the shroud and the PSU to put some kind of black metal piece to cover the PSU text?

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

Hey thanks for checking out my build.

  1. The Kraken is doing push pull. However I did it the "wrong way" for asthetics. So it was pulling air from inside the case and pushing it out towards the front of my case, that was I'm able to show off the AER fans. And yes I also use the stock fans that came with it. It can be seen in my pictures and a few guys asked me about performance in other comments so check those out.

  2. I have seen custom PSU shrouds that fully cover the PSU. And I've also seen people just cover their PSU cutout with some kind of all black sticker. So there's options out there.

conrapp 1 point 5 months ago

Awesome thanks for the reply. Its really helpful to see someone pull off interior AERs in that case and still get good temps. Can't see why they don't put the LED on both sides...

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

You're welcome. I know right, I was apart of that CAM software fiasco. Nothing worked for weeks so I sold everything and went all Corsair. As much as I love Corsair I have to admit the Kraken performed much better in terms of cooling. Where as my H100iV2 can never get below 29°C. And usually jumpy between 35°C-45°C. But I do like Corsair's fans much more. My 2nd build had all HD120s, and my current build has all ML Pros.

chasejitsu135 1 point 17 days ago

quick question, with rick inside the case does it affect airflow or anything?

asking cause i was thinking about doing the same thing in my build

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 17 days ago

Due to Rick's burps and farts it causing negative pressure in the case causing my temps to triple......

Jk.

Putting anything that small inside the case will not affect airflow in anyway. I actually have all fans exhausting so I really do have negative pressure ( cause I chose aesthetics over function ) and have 0 issues with cooling. The Kraken AIO is an amazing cpu cooler. My cpu and gpu were kept in very cool temps despite the negative pressure.

chasejitsu135 1 point 16 days ago

alright awesome, well ricks portal gun had to malfunction or something cause hes sitting on top of my graphics card right now as well

jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

You're 100% correct. Placement is just for aesthetics atm. After I took the pictures I moved it back. 3x 6TB for storage. Quiet and cool storage. I can't tell you what for, cause then you'll know too much. lol jk. Serves as a backup for my server, OS, and VMs

[comment deleted by staff]
jonbuttcheeks submitter 8 Builds 1 point 9 months ago

Yeah I almost bought the blacks too. But I wanted something quiet and ran cool. I have an old PWM fan on them, they sit at 30C. I read on Reddit lemon juice cleans the case up really good. I'll let you know how that goes. That's a great case. I was torn between the new Corsair Air 740 or 540. But the Satin Black on the Evolv is very sleek.
