Description

Built the machine for heavy gaming and video encoding. Overall the build is working very nicely besides two correctable issues. Machine is very quiet. In fact, unless the CPU has been stressed for a while, most of the fans don't even spin up. The majority of the time I can only hear the Kraken's fan which is still on the quiet side.

The first is that, for some reason, the case's fan controller isn't powering the HDD bay fans or the front fan. The rest of my fans are already going through Asus's Fan Xpert 2 so I am just planning on getting some extension cables to add them in also direct to the motherboard. The other problem is that I can't seem to get it stable past 4.2 GHz. I believe this is due to how I had to re-seat the water cooler's pump block and rotate it as I managed to get it in not in the correct orientation. This caused the build to not even post. Some new thermal paste will hopefully fix that problem.

Those 3DMark score entry spots on the top right are not for Firestrike, Cloud Gate, or Ice Storm. They are for 3DMark 11*, which runs through 6 graphics tests and is free under the Performance, or "P" preset, hence the P before the score name.

You get a score after finishing the test, and that 3DMark 11 score is about half of the score you'd get on 3DMark Cloud Gate

If you want to overclock beyond 4.2GHz you could delid your CPU and apply better thermal compound to that. Artic Silver I would recommend. There are plenty of Youtube videos you can watch that tell you how to delid.

Good build, just one thought. For $99 you could have gotten an H100i, which has better cooling ability. Now, it may be an ignorant comment because perhaps the cosmos doesn't support the 240mm radiator, so if that's the case ignore it.

Your doing video encoding I would have personally dropped down to a lower Z87 motherboard and gotten a cheaper case to be able to fit in a Titan. Yes in games its about the same as a 780 but for encoding you would have benefited from the 6GBs of ram compared to 3GBs in the 780.

Video cards are stupid for quality video encoding. You sacrifice efficiency and visual quality for speed. If you are doing real work, CPU based encoding with x264 will lead to your files being smaller and looking better than a CUDA or Hardware based encoder. This is due to the algorithms used for video encoding rely on knowing what other frames look like. When you paraell process then on a GPU, you either have to wait for the other nearby frames to finish (very slow) or ignore them and have to spend more data per frame.

Also price was really not an issue picking it, the rig originally had two Titans, but decided to go with 1 780 as I'm just driving 1 1440p monitor
